Post questions about this reel in this thread
Hi Guys
Just getting acquainted with this reel. I did not know that there was a 97 and 98 Silver beach before I read Michael`s book.
I have bought a 99, but will not receive it for about 4 weeks. It has a plastic spool.
Looks like it has the same side plate size as a 1/0 Senator or 500 or 259, but has a 6 screw stand like a 3/0 Senator. I like that.
It has a picture tail plate and a rod clamp and a yellow swirl handle.
The photos were a bit dark, so I could`t see much detail, but am quite chuffed about getting one.
I will post some pics when it arrives.
cheers

Looking forward to seeing the pics Basto.
Yes Ed, I`m looking forward to taking some.

Great score Basto! I bet we have been bidding against each other on 99s...ha! I'm searching for one too. I just can't decide whether I want to do a hotrod...or a nice stock example...can I just get two? ;) :D ;D 8)
Keep an eye out and good deals can be had.
I watched a pure mint 99 sell for $30 just 2 weeks ago on the big auction site. :o :o

Fiddlesticks...must have happened while I was trying to fashion an AR dog for that Bayhead! :D
Basto note that the 99 uses smaller gears than 500. I didn't know this until I tore down my first one a couple weeks ago and didn't the right drags to replace with.
John
This is my Silver Beach 97. Might not be a factory handle...
Because the 99 uses the same quick takedown head plate as the 500, you can screw the 500 plate right onto the 99 for a higher gear ratio and bigger drags, with a narrower frame of the 99.
Can`t put the 500 tail plate on though, because of the different stand screw pattern.
I remember Mr Tani telling us this years ago.

Basto, I recently put a 99 Silverbeach right side onto a 501 frame and the lock screw hole did not line up. i had 2 choices... either re-drill the lock screw hole in the frame or extend the 3 slots to allow the small pins to rotate further in the frame. I chose the 2nd because I did not have the proper tap. Pennreely had the same problem in a earlier Silverbeach thread and he re-drilled . You can see the re-drill in one of his photos.
The reason they don't line up is each model has it's own handle side ring. This is why I chose the Surfmaster 250 for my project. Both it and the 501 Jigmaster use the #2-250 ring...where the 99 Sliver Beach uses a #2-99. >:(
After reading that, I`m glad I will be keeping mine original. I have a 500, 501, 259, and 1/0 and they are all stock., but thanks for the posts guys. I`m learning all the time.

Mo, Thanks. Never thought to check that. I narrowed a 250 Last week and it all fit good.

Hi Maudu
I think you might be right about the handle.

Yep! That's what's about to happen to my spare parts from the 99 and Cortez jiggy builds! ;D

I have 2 - 99's that I switch Head Plates. 1 - is stock & 1 - is all SS/ 5-1 Gears.
Mike
Yes guys. They are a bit like jigmasters. Very much modified from what I have read.

My 99 arrived and I took a couple of quick pics in the car outside the post office.

I was surprised to find all silver in the engine room.
I will post some more pics when I get it all cleaned up.
It turns like a new reel and everything mechanical is in great condition.
Basto
Great reel, I acquired one a couple of months ago also. Had the right side on a 501 Jigmaster but recently put it back to stock.
Nice Basto!
I got it cleaned up and it does not look all that much different.

I have never been a big fan of the quick take down models, but the locking posts on this 99 are much more effective than on the jigmasters I have owned, which just seem to be a pressed out bump.
The 99 has actual posts.
cheers

I finally picked up a nice 99 Silver Beach. The seller's pics are actually pretty good this time. The outside looks great, and I can't wait until I get a chance to fine tune the inner workings. I bet when Penn canceled this reel they had no idea that in the future it would become a very popular modification to make a "99". 8)
Wow Mo! That is in beautiful condition. Love the handle. Nice find!
Basto
Nice, it looks almost new. That handle is a nice addition.

Ditto on that ^^^
Those reels were mini tanks and Penn knew it, so they put 3 screws on each side of the stand, which is unusual for that size Penn reel.
The 3 position power handle is a huge bonus, as those are all but extinct. Good grab on this one Mo !!
Thanks fellas! She has a steel main...so I was thinkin' ss gear sleeve and a 5 stack...but the more I ponder it I'm leanin' towards a bone stock fine tuning. I'll probably never fish it, it will be one of those reels I sit and spin the handle while I'm watching TV. But ain't just any reel that gets that honor! 8)
That reel is a looker MO!!! The handle knob is stunning!!!

x2 Love how you could have a dozen of those knobs in the same color, yet each one swirled slightly different.
I got some time to reassemble the 99 this morning. I decided to keep this one stock...it just seemed like the right thing to do. All I replaced were the old leather drags and the drag star. The #10-66 looks and feels better with the Convertible handle. The first photo is all the parts cleaned and prepped, and you may notice most of the plating on the drag washers is missing. That's because I feel lapped completely flat washers are more important than shiny ones. The difference in drag power can be dramatic...those stamped washers have a "lip" or raised area from being cut. This takes away surface area, instead of making solid pressure across the whole washer. I thought that sounded like a stretch until I lapped some washers on a reel experiencing weak drag...now I'm a believer! 8)
Excellent Mo, and anyone looking at my drag washers shininess swims back. I lap all on Emory cloth.
Beautiful job on the 99. I feel stock is pretty good. I know that we love to turn these reels into tanks; but, if you are not using them for monster fish, sometimes the money for the upgrades is simply not justified. A 99 will handle many fish the way you built it. Great job!
That's a beauty Mo! I have one, buts it's certainly not in showroom condition like yours. I "might" be making it into a project reel some day, but there is something about these Silver Beaches that whispers to you not to.
John, I do my drag washer lapping on a designated lapping plate (at work) or a piece of glass (at home) using proper lapping pastes (coarse, medium, fine). It's time consuming, but worth the effort IMO. I steer clear of using emery paper, I don't trust it to be "flat" enough. But that's just my engineer mindset taking over.
Hey Chris! Noted on the paste; I'll go that route. Compared to the state of the discs when they come out of some of these gunked-up reels, the emory cloth is an improvement, if not top notch.
When are we getting some more updates on your Jigmaster frame projects??? :)

I agree, This reel in stock form is a capable reel. Actually, what I've done inside will improve drag power by 5-6 lbs. I lapped the metal drag washers and I used a carbontex washer under the main gear. This under gear washer might not be the best choice for long, fast running fish, but for my fishing the added power of an additional friction surface for a few bucks is hard to beat. If I ever did have a fish pull long enough to chew up that washer it is easily replaced. 8)

Sent you a PM John, so as not to detract from this thread.
Emery can be used to get rid of the bulk of the curvature before hitting with the lapping pastes, a combination of both would probably work well.
I am trying to organize all of my fishing reels and found this Silver Beach. The dog spring was missing but that all that was wrong with it. I cleaned it up and it works fine. I am assuming it is of a 1980s vintage.
Thinking of putting in an updated drag, replacing the plastic spool and getting a better handle.
I welcome any other suggestions.
Nice reel Dan-J! It's way older than 80ish, some of the folks here should give you a reasonable age. I'll guess 50s era. 8)

Nice reel. I would date that 99 in the mid 1950's. No earlier than 1953; but because of the plastic spool and the style of the handle knob I would say 1954 or 55. Do not lose the handle, that is the main character of the reel as a vintage piece. IMHO

Absolutely...that handle is a gem. If you use another handle for fishing keep this one for "lookin' at"!
All I have is this piece of hard rock candy ,but it's not for eatin ,it's just for lookin thru. Classic
That was a great movie. Chief Dan George

Knowing that this reel is from the mid-1950s I now believe that this is one of my first reels. I also had a Delmar, an Ocean City and a Beachmaster that I fished with in the '60s all three are MIA. Since and early age I knew that one reel is never enough.
This reel is going on a shelf.
Thanks for the information.
Well, this one's a Silver Beach, just not a 99. Picked it up a couple weeks ago. Not sure what year, but I think it may be late 30's? It does have a few of the older features (waffle clicker, knurled front cross bar, yardage stamped on the foot). Any information on the best way to clean it without further damage to the chrome parts is appreciated.
Jeff
I'd need to see the handle better to date it to the year...but it's an early Silverbeach 97. I clean 'em with dishsoap/baking soda on a toothbrush. 8)
Thanks! Here's a picture of the handle.
I believe that handle came along in '39. The reel was only made until '42. That's as close I can get...but I bet Mike(penn chronology) can get closer.
Thanks!
I'm checking the Penn Chronology book as well (blue version) to see what I can determine.
Been hiding this 99. Just got it out to dust it off today and put it back away till next time I'm babysitting on a rainy day :D :D
Ted
This one has no fishing scene on the tail plate
That's sweet.
Wow...a bare tail plate...that's a new one on me. Nice gem Ted. 8)
That is a beauty Like to find the hat you keep pulling these rabbits outa

Those old Model 97 Silver Beach reels are interesting. Introduced in 1938 with the resin Pear shaped handle. Changed to the handle you have in 1939 and stayed that way until 1942. They did not come back after the war or ever as a Model 97, when they did return they were the Model 99.
Hard to know exactly what year yours is. it is pre-war and it is a Model 97, not a Model 99. The Models 97 & 98 were discontinued after the war and it was not until 1949 that the Model 99 Silver Beach was brought back.
