Title: Need Your Opinion: Grooved Rim Side Plates Versus Beveled Side Plates
Post by: Walleye Guy on June 01, 2022, 06:48:28 PM
I recently picked up a 1973 black 5000C that is fairly long-in-the-tooth and it has beveled side plates.  I'm thinking it might be a little more comfortable to palm when fishing than the grooved rim side plate reels.  Just wondering if anyone out there has an opinion on this.

That was the idea.  But, I don't think they are much easier to palm.  What ABU needed to do is make the whole reel diameter smaller and the side plates narrower with less wasted space inside.

I have every Abu plate type, ridged, smooth, beveled, with CC, without; all the same to me in actual fishing conditions.

They did- 1000, 1500, 2500, 3500. The 1000's are very undersung. About the same innards as 5000, but scalloped like an Ultramag, sort of. I can hid it in my fist. The 1500 is a demitasse....

I'd love to be able to actually find one.

I did some poking around on my lunch break and found this link.  One of the posts shows a parts diagram labeled #7088 which lists the pinion as P/N 4551 and the main gear as #4552.  However, this kit uses drag washer #7079 but the 4.7:1 gear set that I have uses the earlier #3903 drag washer.  So maybe there are two kits: one for early 5000C's which used the #5126 main gear (see attached Ambassadeur_5000C_1969 parts diagram) and a kit for later 5000C's which used the #7072 main gear (see attached 5000C 76-02-04 parts diagrams)?  As they say in Scooby Doo, "the plot thickens."

Oops, that last response was for another post of mine about Ambassadeur gear ratios.  I'll try deleting it.  Sorry fellas, my bad.

Update/edit: I don't know how to delete a post, so if anyone knows how then feel free to nuke it.  : )
