I am a PENN novice and have a limited collection of vintage Peerless 9/109s.Was there a rhyme or reason the handles were different colors or were they just matched up with the side plates for aesthetics. Also, which handles are interchangeable across the board?
Unknown about the color combos. If you want to check handle interchangeability, say, the 24-155 and all the reels it will fit, go to MysticPennparts and look-up a reel like the Monofil 25 and tap on that part#, the chart will be near the bottom of the page.
There wasn't much rhyme or reason to handle color. The only real pattern I've ever been able to decipher, is that colors seem to fall into decades, but still with plenty of spillover. Amber, brown, and olive green were big players in the late 30s/early 40s...Red was hot in the 50s...green and yellow swirl in the 50s/60s...white in the mid 60s...and black has been used since the 70s. Here's a link to the most handle knowledge all in one thread.8)
