Big Tim's Friday Fishn' Trip May 22, 2015 Moro Bay CA.
FACEBOOK LINK: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Morro-Bay-Landing/515082565225540?fref=ts
Taking the lead on this one as per Bryan's request. I talked to Glenn at Moro Bay Landing and we decided on May 22, 2015
This is what we got: 20-24 pre paid customers @ $69.00 will give us the option to pay an additional $30 each to close out the boat "San Pedro Special" and make the charter ours...Food, drink, fish cleaning all extra.
The trip will be 7:00am to 3:00pm Friday May 22, 2015...This is a 3/4 day trip...We can discuss challenges, jackpots, ect. in the coming weeks. I need you to call Glenn and reserve your spot ASAP so we can turn this into a private charter.
Here is what you need to know:
Reservations: Call Glenn at 1(805)771-5500 and book your reservation...Be sure to tell him it's for Big Tim's Friday Fishn' Trip May 22, 2015 (I will be in contact with him to gather a list)
Book online: https://morrobaylanding.fishingreservations.net/sales/index.php?pageno=1
For those in need of a room: Motel 6 - 1(805)979-9808 and they have several rooms available for Thursday May 21, 2015 ... Cost is $61.99 and I'm sure we can get people to spit the rooms...many nice hotels in Moro Bay.
I'm sure I/we will come up with some cool challenges...Spinners & Jigmasters only??? ect...
Let's fill this boat with just us guys and gals
i will let you know as soon as i get a may schedule!
Thanks Tim for taking this on.
Big Tim!
I'm on for this May 22, 2015 trip. And will call on Monday to book my spot.
Question, what happens if we do not get the required number of anglers???
Also, for your Bay Area Folks going, I'm driving the wife's Yukon, can take total of 6 plus gear.
Wayne
Wayne:
I set this up as a fishing trip. I'm going, Glenn is going, you and whom ever else is going. If we don't have enough to charter we will fish with whoever local goes as well. Glenn has a minimum to run and I believe it's 12 or 14 .. My boy's will want to go, ect. and I'm sure I can get a few others to go as well if needed. If we run short of a charter we only pay $69.00 each and have a great day.
Let's just fish and enjoy life ;D
Big Tim
I think I'm in Tim.
I will know tomorrow.
When do we start bantering about how much and what gear to bring?
Y'all can start talkin' any time...It wont matter as I reign supreme on the Central Coast ;D ;D ;D I hope you can make it.

Do you think I should bring my International 80 with the Big Harnell full roller?
Will we have any time for trolling?
I know Darren would like to see at least one 14/0 Senator on board. ;)
No trolling, but it would definitely get a laugh or 2 if you bring your Harnell and 80 ... Think light tackle..Jigmasters and spinners...If you are in 200-240' with a current up to 1lb. weight and and a rock cod rig...Me I like 4-6oz jigs and a 50' flip cast. If we get shallow then game on. Most of these boats do not allow overhead casting...Cattle wagon safety :-\ If we wind up with a charter we most likely can ask for some privileges. Maybe the 80 & Harnell with a 2lb. weight will work but your'e going to be tired ;D

I grew up in the Bay area and have fished California my whole life.
Count me in! Will be an interesting trip! Might have to adjust me tackle alittle.

Probably a Shimano TLD Star 15-30 with a Okuma Cedros jigging stick.
Heavy rig, Penn 349, (In Honor of Lee and my Grandpa) w/a Diawa 6' 20/50.
I might throw in an old school Dam Quick Super on a Diawa 7' 15/30 just to represent the spinners......
I have been experimenting with salt water fly's for a while now so I am sure to throw some in for "testing".
I don't know the area well, which species are targeted ?
Marc..
From Glenn
We'll probably try about 50' to 100' to start... 2oz-4oz jigs and swimbait territory. We may have to move deeper if the bite is off in the shallows (depends on the swell) If the bite is good in shallow water, we'll stay there. But if the shallow water bite is off, be prepared to fish 150' to 200'

California Rock cod and Ling cod. Sounds like white sea bass is showing further south, I wonder if the will make it up by then?

I tend to fish "Old School " because I inherited so much gear.
I have another Harnell , 10/25 I think w/a 2/0 mint Penn that was my Dads for flipping underhanded.
i was gently reminded yesterday that may is my parents 60th wedding anniversary. can't remember if it's the 21st or the 25th of may. i wonder if mom and dad would like to go fishing. i'm sure dad would!

I take it back Tim. That is a stunning squid. However, with all the colors it must be Italian, so it really is a calamari. ;) Dominick
I'm in, confirmed for 1 maybe 2.
I just called Glenn and paid.
Well they are off and running in Moro Bay...Nice start with 4 sign ups, I will get a list going soon a I have been very busy:

bryan and i are in. i'll call glenn tomorrow. we'll have a nice dinner for the folks the weekend before. dad doesn't want to go out anymore, unless it's to the indian casino, so we'll have a bbq at the farm.
Big Tim,
How is our attendee count coming?
My buddy, Rick, and I will be there!
I am holding an extra room at the Motel 6 for $55/night, if anyone wants it let me know, otherwise I'll turn it back to the motel closer to May 21.
Wayne
Good morning all...Alan glad to hear the you an Bryan can make it...Wayne we have 4 signed up as of now, then Alan and Bryan, Glenn from Moro Bay & most likely both of my Son's...So 9 +/- right now & we need only need 12+ to go and I'm sure we will have that many by May.
Big Tim
Calling Glenn today.
FaceBook friend from Hawaii may be coming along too.
He went out with Virg's last Friday (I think) with him, his son and wife. Caught 8 between them with one ling cod. Guess who caught the ling???
Lady luck strikes again. ;D
Caught me for 2
i just signed up as well.
Awesome ;D with FisHstiicks 2 we are at 8 + Glenn that's 9 and 1 or 2 of my sons makes 10+..Not a bad start for a Friday fishing trip..We will have fun no matter what.
Big Tim
if we get to 24, then we can have the entire boat by kicking in an extra $30. otherwise, the boat maxes out at 44.
When I talked with Glenn today, we had 6.
maybe he's counting paid reservations. i paid for mine already.
Good morning...We have 6 paid yes...I'm counting Glenn who most likely doesn't have to pay & I'm counting a few prospects that I'm quite sure will pay. My boys aren't on the list as paid but one or both will be going. Sorry for any confusion.
Tim...Have a great day
Nice Friday on the San Pedro Special yesterday and they only had 15 anglers:

Finishing paying for some tax stuff and will square up with this trip next week.

Not many reports lately. We have 7 for sure and I would really like to have at least 12. I do not believe there will be a problem picking up enough locals to make this a for sure go at 12, but I would like to take chance out of the equation. My son Mike most likely will not be able to go as he entered the real world and now has a job.
Tim
There are a bunch of local guys over at http://www.pierfishing.com/
Would you like me to extend an invite?
i can put something on facebook. does anyone have a photo of the boat? i took a quick look and couldn't find a photo that i could copy.
Alan: I can't find a picture either but this link shows the boat, 60' wit a 21' beam is as much as I can find :

i put a photo up on my facebook page.
I have wife's approval now asking work for the day off. Looking forward to fishing with my awesome reel guys! Will know by Monday.

We got 12 so we don't have to worry about chance coming into the equation. I am sure we will pick up a few locals as well. I am having a tuff go getting the $ together for a high dollar part for my car to pass smog, is anyone coming thru Fresno on their way to Moro Bay Thursday ? I have a room with 2 beds already and will most likely not need a ride, but it is always better to be prepared.
Tim
Ok I finally got all the approvals needed to go on this trip. I called the number listed for Morro Bay but no one answered. Should I try again later? Or go ahead and just book it online?
I would book online & I will contact Glenn tomorrow for any updates. I think Glenn is off on Fridays. Glad you can go.
Tim
Guys: I talked to Patriot Sportfishing and found out the San Pedro Special boat was hauled out and waiting on Coast Guard inspection and should be ready to go in the next week and half to 2 weeks, which is fine for the 22nd. As for me I have to bail out on another fishing trip. Sorry but finances and family are first. You guys still have 12 people and the trip will be a go and most assuredly will pick up a few more locals at the end.
Sorry, Tim
we certainly understand. we'll get you out fishing someday!
I Hear the Boat had some serious issues and is heading south for repairs. Anyone know the actual details?
i may give glenn a call tomorrow.
Just spoke to Glenn. He says the boat will be back this weekend. We're good.
I'll go ahead and take the lead on this one. Glenn has my contact info and knows to forward any questions to me.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone, and catching some Lings!
right now, the plan is just shrimp flies and whole squid, maybe 4, 8 and 12 ounces of lead. mostly, gotta find out how deep we'll be fishing.
Ok I paid online. So that makes 13 now. Can't wait to catch some Lingcod!
Dave Klein
the boat fishes 44 max, but never fills up on fridays, and they will run with 12. we're good!
Alan if you get a chance could you post a photo of how you rig whole squid?
I hate rigging on the ride out. Grandpa always said "Keep your eyes up ." If I do that the first couple of hours I dont get seasick😄
i buy the 3 pound blocks at the local chinese market, usually one block per person should do it. it's a very simple two hook shrimp fly rig with a weight at the bottom. rather than hang strips of squid, i hang the whole squid by the pointy end. it's the most simple rig imaginable!

Swimmer, check out this rig. http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=13561.0 As Alan said simple. Dominick
Thanks guys.
It is the same type of rig that has worked off the California coast forever.
Just the using whole squid thing had me imagining some complex rig that I did not want to spend my first hour on the boat tying.
Dom are you coming?
No I'm not going. Alan is right about just hooking the squid through the pointy end and you are good to go. However, I rig the squid for short strikes. You run the hook through the tail, follow through with the line then hook through the mantle and end up with the hook in between the eyes. This works best on small squid. Dominick
Shrimp fly rig with a 12oz +/- weight and long strips or whole squid is a killer in these waters.I like a jig 4oz to 8oz depending on the water depth with a dropper loop 7/0 hook teaser about 12-16" above with a whole squid hooked thru the tip, pulled thru and reversed hooked thru the body about 3" down. If they are there they will bite.

The boat will provide bait. Most likely cut up squid. If you want whole squid it advised to bring a box or 2. This is usually available at check in.
Tim
We are now down one guy!
Just heard from my buddy Rick, and he is "tapping out", WILL NOT be attending this trip, something about his son graduating from college.
I'll be there and again, if any one needs a Hotel 6 room reservation for $55/night, I am holding an extra until closer to the event, and if not needed, will cancel it.
REALLY looking forward to meeting you AT.com members on this trip!
Wayne
I'm fired up to fish with the reel pros! I'm getting whole squid and gunning for the big dogs! My reels are ready thanks to Brian and Alan! Looking forward to meeting you all!
Dave
i spoke to glenn about bait. not sure what they normally do, but glen sells 5 pound blocks of whole squid for $12, so i will be getting one of those. when we fish on my boat, we typically go through 2 pounds per person. if you limit out on rockfish first and have extra squid for lingcod, you can hang two or three squid just for giggles. it's gotta be more appetizing that just one!
That's not a bad price. I may need to get a box to share as well. I'm hoping white sea bass will be around.
I'll pitch in for some extra whole squid! I just purchased some new Jax Jigs! Look out Lingcod!
I will split a box with you pangamaster.
There is no way we can fish a 5 lb box between the two of us!
I'm going to try the new flat fall jigs to see how well they do in our waters.

Should I set him up with Braid and Mono? He hasn't done much fishing so I'm inclined to set him up with a 20# and 30# mono set up, but I personally feel that a 20# and 50# braid set-up would be much better. What do you guys think?
definitely braid! just spoke to david nish and he can't make it. matt juanes will be leaving at 3am on friday and will bring one friend. jason, dave k., you guys are all set, right? wayne, you're all set? ernie and craig from fresno might join us. jonathan, are you coming from fresno? anybody else?
i just spoke to glenn at the shop. the boat is still in ventura and coast guard is holding it up for something. things will supposedly be cleared up today or tomorrow and the boat should be back in morro bay by wednesday or thursday. if there is an additional delay, glenn will let us know on wednesday.
Yup I'll be there . Hopefully The Miss's and I can get out of Fresno about noon.
Can't wait to get on the lings.

our family has a little vacation house in cauycos. the address is 17 - 16th street. i always get the numbers backwards. google maps might work.
joey and i will be there at about 3pm on thursday and we're going to start dinner. i'm thinking two safeway frozen lasagnas, garlic bread, a head of iceberg lettuce, tomatos and italian dressing. (i can hear dominick groan..... ;D). guys, everybody, swing by for dinner on thursday night. bring an appetite.

I'm all set! Fired up! Driving out Thursday night and I'll meet you guys there in the morning. What time should we be there in the am?
...I hope there is a back up plan if the Pedro can't make it. I see the Princes out of Virg's has nothing booked and is a 6am - 4pm deal. Not sure if Morro Bay and Virg work together to help each other out?
dave, can i get you to swing by the house in cayucos for dinner on thursday?

yes, i have a possible back up plan. apparently, the two shops do not get along, but i've known glenn at morro bay landing for 30 years and i've know frank at virg's for 20 years. glenn is going to let me know by wednesday. if the san pedro is still down, i will talk to frank on wednesday evening about getting us moved over. either way, we should be able to fish.
Awesome Alan! We are going to be late arrivals on Thursday night so I will have to take a rain check on your invite. But thank you so much for the invite! Looking forward to fishing with you!
matt juanes will be driving down late as well. want to hook up with him?
Brad Leage who ran the Princess for many years now has the Endeavor and will be running out of Moro Bay Landing...I will cross my fingers for you all that he is the back up plan if need be.
Knock em dead guys. I will be back fishing soon.
Tim

... jason, dave k., you guys are all set, right? wayne, you're all set? ernie and craig from fresno might join us. jonathan, are you coming from fresno? anybody else?
Alan, I am good to go, going solo on this trip, Rick is attending his son's college graduation. Anyone need a ride down to MB??
Also, last call on the second room I have reserved at the Hotel 6 for $55/night. If no one wants it, I'll release it back to H6 later today.
I'll be in MB by 3pm, it's an area of the world I've never seen, so with a paid rental and half a tank of gas, I'm driving around.
What time do you want us for dinner??? Assuming I can find the home!!!!! Keep your cell on! I will be bringing my wife's homemade double chocolate chip brownies for dessert - and man are these good!!!!! Really looking forward to this fishing trip with all of you.
Wayne
5pm would be good, but anytime is fine!. cell coverage is not the greatest in that area. the house phone number is 805-995-2729 and the address is 17 - 16th street, cayucos, 93430.
I'm driving the Family to the wifes parents house in San Louis Obispo....so I will meet everyone there in the AM.
