Title: Project Penn 704 done
Post by: Marcq on May 27, 2015, 05:23:26 PM
It started with this green 704
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20150505_132944_zpsvkczgesn.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20150505_132944_zpsvkczgesn.jpg.html)
Installing a second dog

(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20150506_154257_zpso5alnfzy.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20150506_154257_zpso5alnfzy.jpg.html)
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20150506_150304_zpsgpo6bxor.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20150506_150304_zpsgpo6bxor.jpg.html)
At that point everything was straight forward until it was time to install a spring for that dog, my intention was to use a leaf spring but couldn't figure out how to make it work so I went with the same spring the other dog uses, had to do a lot of grinding the make it lay flat, would have been easier with out that stud in the way  ::)

Putting it back together

Was a bit tricky to install the main gear with two dog, made a mono leach to held it back

Wasn't sure  first but they are alternating, the ratchet gears are pretty close together to start with and with the second dog there's is not much back play, actually! No back play at all  :)

Thanks, Marc..

The guys on the jetty fishing near by must get the hell scared out of them when they first hear it!
I'm wondering if just upgrading the one dog to SS would help? That might damage the bronze gear though?
I would also like to drill holes in the bottom of the cup, wondering if I can do this with a dremel?

Hope I wont get a "can you shut that thing up" because my answer is I can't   ;D

On this Penn  I would like to manually close the bail later on and a drag upgrade

Now I'm not sure what line to put on, going to jig it

Thanks again guys
Marc..

The very best line you can use - the only line I'll use on my 704z right truths 716z(I have all reels in between) is Fireline Original. I use 30lb on the 704/706, 20lb on the 710/712 and 14lb on the 714/716. This line was made for these reels.

Cool!! Fireline Original, deals well with the roller? Was going to go 20lb Big Game or 50lb braid PP. Wonder if 25lb mono would do it? I like mono in the 25lb range

Fireline is indeed user friendly stuff, but if you put the line on correctly you can use just about any braid.
I have used:
fireline 20,30
pp 20,30,50
original suffix 30,40
suffix 832 40

It's true that the line lay is not the best, so if you just tie to the spool and "reel on" 450 yards of braid, it's going to be a mess.  But if you use a machine or do it extremely carefully by hand, you can get the backing and braid that never sees daylight tight and even.  You can then "reel on" the last 75 yards that you actually fish with.  The line lay won't be as pretty as on a new shimano, but it won't cause you problems while fishing.

Also, compared to a newer reel, you need to leave a slightly larger gap between the line and the lip of the spool.  And you will need to pay a bit more attention to maintaining line tension as you're fishing so you get nice tight wraps.  Honestly, the only time I get wind knots is after a non-fishing buddy has used my rig for an afternoon so there are some loose wraps hidden in there.

If you decide on braid, go bail-less for sure.  Bail-less works fine for both plugging and deadsticking bait.

I wouldn't even think about using 25lb mono on this reel, braid either - Fireline is a fused dyneema - not a true braid, trust me, after fishing these things for over 20 years Fireline is the ONLY line to use, save the PP and Suffix for newer reels. My 704,710 and 712 are all converted to MPU(bail less) I used the line roller from a Mitchell 406 for my 710z - there is no need for a bail on these reels, the bail springs go and you will only wind up snapping off a lure.

Would a 30lb 300y Fireline spool  fit in the 704?

Yes, you will need to put a length of mono backing though, can't remember because I buy 1500yd spools of Fireline, in truth there is no need to put more than a 150 yd spool on, fill the rest up with cheap mono. I use that for a season and then I reverse the line and get another year out of it.

If you have a spare spool fill that first with the Fireline then top off with mono then reel that onto your other spool.

The dogs on the 704 are pretty beefy and they are metal, compared to the 650ss which are smaller and are brass

You can drill holes with a dremel  but a drill press works a lot better

And  easy tools to make, can use it vertically or horizontally

Hey folks, what are you painting with that will hold up? I have several SS's and a couple of older Japanse metal reels that could use a spray. Are you baking finish?

Good move, you'll see, it's not complicated,  measure twice drill once, start with a small drill bit, if you're off a bit it can always be corrected with a rat tail file. And use a automatic center punch before you drill

If you paint it, use automotive lacquer paint and let it cure a week

Looking forward to it

I powder coated mine but you can use automotive lacquer paint and let it cure for a week before putting it back together

No reason, good choice to only drill the bottom
Are you drilling the 710?

The 704 would have been easier to do, one hole per compartment https://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=AwrTcYE8oGxVkKcAGBiJzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTIzZnFtZXExBHNlYwNzcgRzbGsDaW1nBG9pZANlNGNhMTIwYzlmMjNiNzRmOWI3YWJiYzZlYjlmZjAzYwRncG9zAzQxBGl0A2Jpbmc-?.origin=&back=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3DPenn%2B704%26fr%3Dmcafee%26tab%3Dorganic%26ri%3D41&w=525&h=394&imgurl=www.stripersonline.com%2Fcontent%2Ftype%2F61%2Fid%2F1158218%2Fwidth%2F525%2Fheight%2F394&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.stripersonline.com%2Ft%2F747307%2Frestored-penn-704&size=28.0KB&name=Restored+%3Cb%3EPenn+704%3C%2Fb%3E&p=Penn+704&oid=e4ca120c9f23b74f9b7abbc6eb9ff03c&fr2=&fr=mcafee&tt=Restored+%3Cb%3EPenn+704%3C%2Fb%3E&b=0&ni=600&no=41&ts=&tab=organic&sigr=11ovbl032&sigb=12klekr7v&sigi=126d5gagr&sigt=10o31q4ah&sign=10o31q4ah&.crumb=EAJMC578wq9&fr=mcafee

That's the number of 9/32 holes 9/16 apart center, I was able to drill on my first 710 project a while back

Mark this is my grandson's 706. It was mine a long time ago. I gave it to my son in the 80's.

It was customized by Rick Champagne. It has a one way bearing on the end of the pinion gear where the brass bushing used to live and another one on the main gear's shaft on the handle side. It has worked beautifully for the last 3 years. It hasn't seen much use. Only during the springtime Cobia run.
