I need a show of hands to put together a 10th anniversary crab and fishing trip aboard the Huli Cat on December 8, 2018. According to the Huli Cat's website we can charter the whole boat for $1,800.00 for up to 20 fishermen. Assuming we can put together 10-15-or 20 persons the cost will be $180.00, $120.00 or $90.00. The cost does not include tips for the crew. We can discuss that later, although 15% of $1,800.00 is $270.00. So we can figure that cost into the whole trip. I sent an email to Captain Tom Mattusch and I am waiting to hear from him. Please be prompt in your responses so we can reserve the boat and work out the payments. Also we have to figure in the cost of Alan's fare. It is not fair that he should have to pay after all he has done for us and this site. Dominick
SEE EXPLANATION BELOW
Count me in Dominick. Good work!
Steve
Whats the target species? And what about lodging?
Hi Dominik
Count me in! Let me know if I can do anything to help, fish often with Tom
Juan
PJ, rock fish and dungeness crab.
UPDATE: I received an email from Tom Mattusch. He said a charter for the crab combo is $2,700.00 instead of $1,800.00. I obtained the information for the charter price of $1,800.00 from the Huli Cat website. You may check it out. If you click on the link for the crab combo you will see $1,800.00. I pointed out the discrepancy to captain Mattusch and asked for a better price than $2,700.00. I'll keep you posted. I don't know if this will actually come to fruition but I will report when I hear back from captain Mattusch on the actual price. At $2,700.00 we would have to come up with 20 persons at $135.00 + tip. Let's see what happens. Dominick
Dom,
At $135 I'm in.
Best ,

PJ we haven't discussed lodging but I've put up a bunch of members between the guest room and plenty of floor space. We are just in the throes of putting this together. There will be more specific planning as we see it come together. Dominick

Love to go — but it is our 20th Anniversary that week.
My wife says to go (one of those sneaky marriage test things) — however I would like to also celebrate our 21st.
Sounds like a great trip.

Mike, no matter what the trip is planned to be, my advice is to be prepared for both. Shallow and deep. Changes on the fly.

AMAZING!!!
48 hours after Dominick first posted this 10th Anniversary fishing trip,
we have 17 guys signed up, that's assuming Sal's counting is correct ;D
This will be EPIC!!!

Steve
I'd hazard a guess that it will be shallow. After today, if I'm not mistaken, north of Pigeon Pt will be stuck back inside 180'....
Mike
If that's the case then I can use one of my small narrow reels. I will bring a backup just in case.
Mike
Okay we have 17 members ready to go. Here is a copy of the email sent to me from Tom Mattusch.
The cost for a charter is $2,700. Cost per person is $135. Charter price is based is based on 20 person cost. Anglers over 20 is $135 per person. This does not include tackle, cleaning, tips or license. $10 fish clean. Gratuity $20.
[/font]
It would be easier if can get 3 more takers. That way we can prepay $165.00. I can collect the money through PayPal (friends and family) so there is no charge for the service. This post will put the thread at the forefront again so we might get some more takers. Dominick
Dominick thanks for setting this up! I have no doubt we'll get the 20 people minimum needed to make this happen seeing as how the trip is still months away :)
I've never fished "the bay" or done a crap trip so I'm super excited!
As long as I can wrangle the day off, there'll be 2 of us. My girlfriend loves to fish and I know she would enjoy going.

Okay here we go with the trip. I will need to send some money to pay to hold the boat. The amount to send will be $170.00. Dom: 19 x $142.10= $2700.00 for the charter and pays for Alan. Are we adding $20.00 for the tip up front? and the rest of the $170.00 towards the jackpot? You will have 20 people without an issue & most likely a waiting list. I think Steve was looking for a tad bit more of a break down..I'm in 100%

Works for me Dominic, thanks for the clarification.
I'm glad we're including fish cleaning and tip!!!!!
I'm gonna paypal my $$$$$ soon....
The tip is paid at the time of cleaning your fish since some don't have their fish cleaned they will not want to pay. I always add some extra at the time of cleaning for the help they give that's the tip. They charge for each fish not the same for everyone. So it doesn't include the fish cleaning. If it gets canceled due to weather how are you going to do a refund. Ask Tim about that he has experience on that one.

Okay all you members that signed up for the AT.com 10th anniversary rock fish and crab combo, the trip is coming together nicely. I reached out to some of the members to help sponsor the trip and the response was overwhelming. There will be plenty of prizes and swag to be given away. Therefore, this trip is being sponsored by (in no particular order):
Mystic Parts
Vintage Offshore Tackle *
Pro Challenger
Bryan Young
Cortez Conversions
Motive Fabrication
Maxed Out
* Special Highlight: Randy Pauly's lightly used personal reel, to the lucky person to catch the heaviest ling (Randy's suggestion). I am giving this reel the sobriquet of "Big Paulie."
Description: Tiburon T4N1 extra narrow Penn 113HL 4/0 Senator with a Tiburon handle. The reel is setup with 65 lb. braid backing, then a long topshot of new 50 lb. Softsteel and a short Seaguar 50 lb. flourocarbon leader.
There are other highly prized items which I will highlight in further updates. Dominick
Ohh Man! Gotta practice my ling technique. BT? Can I get a lesson?
Thanks Dominick!
Steve
This is the opportunity I have been waiting for! Not to necessarily win any of the prizes, although it sounds like that would be a lot of fun too, but I have some hardware of my own to unload er I mean present to some lucky sucke.., I mean winner, the Golden Carp will be passed along to some new deserving fisherman. There's just no way I can win it consecutively? Has any previous winner gotten it twice in a row?

Here is an update on our salmon fishing trip. I had booked us on line for a salmon trip. Wayne and I showed up at the Huli Cat at about 5:25 a.m. The boat was deserted. We waited around for a while then called Tom Mattusch. He said he was not going out until 4:00 p.m. on a booked charter. He said the online service had not told him about our booking. He tried to get us on another boat but was not successful. So Wayne and I went for breakfast and than home. Dominick

That sounds familiar.. Same thing with me on Monday. Showed at 5 to a deserted boat, called at 5:30 and when whoever showed up at about 6 I was told the trip was changed to rockfish (no calls or emails on the change, I was pretty pissed). I was able to jump on the Riptide after having to RUN to the tackle shop and back in muck boots to pay another C-note and got skunked anyway. I think it was a bad omen. I still don't have my money back but did get a refund notice email from them.

Maxed Out
Penn Reels
* Special Highlight: Randy Pauly's lightly used personal reel, to the lucky person to catch the heaviest ling (Randy's suggestion). I am giving this reel the sobriquet of "Big Paulie."
Description: Tiburon T4N1 extra narrow Penn 113HL 4/0 Senator with a Tiburon handle. The reel is setup with 65 lb. braid backing, then a long topshot of new 50 lb. Softsteel and a short Seaguar 50 lb. flourocarbon leader.
There are other highly prized items which I will highlight in further updates.
Mystic Parts is sending a package of swag containing hats and stuff.
Cortez Conversions is sending reel kit.
Alan Chui is supplying the guts and handle for the reel kit.
Adam (Motive Fabrication) is supplying a drag insert.
Bryan is supplying a drag stack to customize the Cortez Conversion.
Ted (Maxed Out) is sending some goodies.
Penn Reels is sending some swag. I will reveal all when I receive the package
I think I covered everyone. If I left out a donation please let me know.
I spoke with Tom Mattusch and he is willing to take a max of 25 so there are 3 openings.
I still need payments from some of you. I have to write a check by digging into my Baja fishing fund. Dominick
New Guy here.
I didn't see where this trip was originating from, I assume the SF Bay Area?
If so I'd like to throw my hat in to join you or be on the standby list.
Thanks,
Steve

Three more weeks, I am getting anxious to go fishing (and crabbing!!).
Weather looks typical for HMB, but this far out I'll also take a cloudy over a rainy forecast (and I am tired of the smoke). I'm in San Jose.

I have one more package coming. Then I will photograph everything. I have a lot of swag and at this point I don't know how to parcel it out. I am thinking of a little contest so that members not in the area can have a shot at some of the stuff. I am open to all and any ideas. Dominick

Hi Dominick and all
How about raffles for the swag and other prices? With the raffle everyone gets a ticket and has equal chances :)
Mixed with the contest for Randy's reel biggest ling sounds fair and how about another contest for the biggest Rockfish (vermilion or Canary)?
Thanks
Juan
As a newbie I know I carry no weight, but I'd like to see everyone onboard get something versus all raffles and prizes. My luck sucks as it is, so I'll be on the bow as well I am sure.

Hi All!
As they say on radioland: "first time caller, long time listener". Just wanted to chime in to thank you all and Alan Tani, especially, for the website. Looking forward to meeting all of you on the trip! The crab & catch are just the cherry on top!
Neil Najarro
neil, it's about time. welcome!!!!!
Alan, did your trap rig with the cyalume light stick work? I havn't tried the light stick yet, but I've used a sliding front hook and switched to single assist hook instead of the treble to minimize snagging. It's been over a yr since I fished lingcod and don't recall how effective it was but will have them ready to go, as well as jigs, shrimp flies, and whole squid.
nah, the light stick didn't help one bit. my next project is a vibrating ling cod lure. having trouble finding a source of, um, vibrators in "bulk" at a decent price....... ::)

Quick update on attendance. Alan told me that his brother Ed wants to make the trip. That makes 25, so we are full. Another package came yesterday from an anonymous donor from out of the northwest. Here is a picture of my dining room table before I pack it away in some sort of easy to carry to the boat manner. The donors in no particular order are:
Dominick (AKA Handsome, Personable, Benevolent, Pulchritudinous, and Mr. Speedo)
Alan Tani (AKA The Boss)
Penn University (Tony Dubeck)
Mystic parts (Maureen and Scott)
Vintage Offshore Tackle (Randy)
Ultimate Conversions (Brian Young)
Cortez Conversions (Tom Hryniuk)
Pro Challenger (Alan Chui)
Anonymous (Washington) hint
El Pescador (Herr Wayne Deutscher and Frau Jennifer Deutscher)

Mike Tim and I will be there around 1:30
I will drop in later this evening to make sure the garage crowd is following all the rules.
Well folks the Huli Cat has mechanical problems. I just heard about an hour ago that Captain Tom cancelled the trip. I was able to get the Rip Tide but they only do rock fish, no crab. The boat is docked right next to the Huli Cat so if the crew that is going does not get this post in time we will get them in the morning to transfer to the new boat. The next problem is that the Rip Tide only takes 20 people so we were in a quandary as to who to drop off the list. However, the boss solved that problem by taking his boat and 5 people who are already at his house. So to quote an old Yiddish saying "man plans, God laughs." The other problem I have is how to refund some of the money. The Rip Tide is cheaper without crab. At least the weather does not look bad. Someone said let's make this an annual trip. Yeah right. Dominick
That sucks. ::)
Best laid plans!
Well then I was only going for the crab. Can I get a refund? or consider it a wash.
I'm still going to Alan'sthis evening, just to try and help keep everyone in line.

Returned home after the day's fishing trip, had much to do, so I called Gary's wife, Mary Jo, and asked her if I should treat Gary as a house guest in the hopes he wants to return for another fishing trip here,
She SAID, "NO - You keep that old coot busy AND work him like a Show Pony!"
So I did,
Put Gary on the fish cleaning process, and had him make dinner as well!!!!
FRESH Rockfish and a light dinner.
Gary, You are a wonderful house guest and fishing guy, please feel free to return for another time.
Gary's getting breakfast together, more to follow...
Guys, that was a great time and an absolutely beautiful day for December! Thanks for having me.
As has been said, thanks again to Dominic for making the arrangements, and congrats on Alan's 10 years providing an invaluable resource for us fishing nuts. It was very nice to meet all of you gents. Ed, don't bring that stuff anymore.. I spend enough money on fishing as it is- :o
One thing that proved true for me is it is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Spare gear..
I was using a Surfmaster 250 for most of the day. Maybe around 11 I noticed the freespool lever was lazy, but still worked. I thought the screw was loose, but it wasn't. The reel locked up for a minute during a fish retrieve a drop or two later, but freed up and I bagged the fish. I should have acted sooner. I busted out a spare reel, the magnificent Jigmaster and swapped it for the last drop of the day, and bagged my biggest rock fish. I had never rockfished before.
Thanks for the tips from everyone, and the deckhand Mike was the snagmaster for sure, he must have saved a ton of gear and is a very nice guy. I tipped him even thought it was included in our fare.
Here are the pics of why my Surfmaster went out of service. I thought it might have been my service. In the end, servicing it might have helped save the reel from catastrophe.
You can see from the witness marks in the grease the spring went for a bit of a ride around, but didn't end up in the gears, it stuck to the grease on the spool.
Rob
Like Bryan too, I'll post photos with little story,
BUTT first, THANK YOU Dominick for putting this trip together and for all the SWAG!!! WOW!!!! to say the least! REELY nice job Buddy Boy!!!
Personal swag from my wife, Jennifer!! Sweetheart asked me to hand out this bungie cord & knob to help hold our fishing poles to the deck railing. Worked out GREAT Dear!!!
Those on BOAT B whom did not receive this, please let me know and I'll send one to you.
Suns coming up.
We here know cold, like you guys on the east coast!!! It is 50 degrees with a 10 mph wind! BURRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!
Now's its going to warm up!!!!
Beyond all the winners of the day, this guy, Juan, had the Hot Rod for sure!!!! Caught his 10 Rockfish, then began to fill other's bags, including my own!!! He also caught 3 Lingcods around 4 lbs. apiece.
Everybody say HELLO to Juan!!!
With all my concerns of the high swell activity, this is how the day looked all day.
A selfless plug for Mo & Scott at Mystic Parts - your names were spoken often and with thank-fulled praises! You two are the BEST!!!!
Sal, your handle photographed GREAT in the bright sunshine!!!! Worked GREAT, felt GREAT!!!!
We thought Mike had the BIG fish and thus, BIG REEL of the day, BUTT - PJ on Boat B had other thoughts!!!!
Let's all see it tricked out when you are done!!!!
And here is mild-mannered, our own Bryan, enjoying a musubi - spam with rice wrapped up in seaweed - I asked him for a bite, and he then licked every surface inch of the snack and handed it to me!!! REELY Bryan ;D
Wayne, you're by far the best photographer and story teller on our site, I always enjoy your reports.
Great group of guys, Dominick shines like a new coin :)...very nice!

big tim and pj arrived friday, while i was putting up christmas lights. we were standing out in front of the driveway when dominick called. when he heard me say "dominick!," the first thing that pj said was, "the trip is cancelled!" well, he was half right. explaining that we only had room from 20 of the 25 guys that signed up, i told him that i could put 5 on my boat, and we were set. ok, so now i have to hustle to get the boat ready. pj volunteered to finish putting up the lights for me, then tim made the mistake of volunteering to help do anything else. well, feeling a little bit like tom sawyer, i figured this would be a great time to get these small modular storage boxes put together. guys, sorry about the muddy backyard. rorn and mike arrived later, and we were five!
we launched early and were greeted with flat calm water. ok, i was showing off a little, but we made 30 knots to the first spot that was only 17 miles south. pj stuck this beautiful cabezon right away.
then he stuck this pig of a ling cod. my el cheapo scale called it 13 pounds!
poor ron is thinking, "the dude stole my fish!"
but, hey, we're all friends here!
we got a few rockfish, then ron swung on this!
big tim scored!
and then mike!
we ended up with eight all total and a couple of dozen nice rockfish!

I thank all the AT members that showed up and for their understanding that the plans almost tanked. Thanks to Alan in bringing his boat to the party. That helped to make the trip a success. I have to prepare an accounting since everyone is going to get either a full refund or the difference between the Huli Cat and Rip Tide. To complicate things in order to get the Rip Tide I had to pay for 15 spots and only 14 were on board. The charter was for boat only so I had to buy 15 burlap bags and the bait. I need to get our money back from Tom Mattusch to pay for my credit card and fund the refunds. Randy Pauly donated his personal reel for the heaviest lingcod which was won by PJ. Thanks Randy. Everyone got a hat from Mystic parts. Thank you Maureen and Scott. Wayne won a nice spinning reel which was donated by Tony at Penn. Thank you Tony. The rest of the swag which included tackle bags and Penn shirts an electric reel was won by various members who's names I don't remember. Wayne gave out some goodies (key chain and bungees). Thank you Wayne and Jennifer. Bryan Young gave out some tackle and also donated a drag stack for a Cortez conversion reel. Thank you Bryan and Tom for your generosity. The Cortez conversion needed innards to put it together and Alan Chui donated the innards. The reel was won by Ben (Alan's Buddy) and it is on my work bench to put it together for him. A bunch of stuff came from anonymous from the Pacific northwest (Washington). Is this enough hints? I know I probably left someone out so I am thanking them. Lastly, thank you Alan Tani for 10 years of entertainment on this site. I for one had a great time kibitzing some of the members as well getting help while working on reels. For all who were on the boat please pictures if you took some. Dominick
I second SALs words, great to see all you good people get together, & catch some nice fish, looks like nice calm seas, & thank you Allan for this great forum you have created, & thanks to every one that has posted the photos, at least Wayne is good for something ay, cheers Don.
As a newcomer to the bottom fish of California I had a great time. I'd go again and change a little gear, I learned a lot, the weather was sunny and flat calm. Every one seemed to get along and there was plenty of cut bait. I hope they are wrong, "you are what you eat". Just wondering 🤡
Thanks Alan and Dommie for making the fun day and scrambling in the short time when the huli cat was announced broken. The crab might have been great, butt they are still out there for the next boat.
Dominick, thanks again for putting this together. 8)
The swag was nice, especially the coozie. That could be come an heirloom!
The hat is in the wash, I left my pack (inadvertently) under the cleaning board, my car stinks to high heaven!
I caught my big rockfish on that shrimp fly rig too. I wish it was a ling or a fat red. It was my first deepwater trip so I am still learning. I am going to have a Juan jig next time for sure.
I have the Coit Electric Reel, it is pretty. ;D I need to research that.

Rob the Coit reel is a 1950's era reel from Mendota Ca. and it was designed as an electric brake to stop backlash. I think I still have a couple is my collection all boxed up. Dr. Todd Larson can help out more about the reel.

AT members that are waiting for a refund. There was a glitch in the payment through paypal from the Hulicat to me. I had to cancel the payment and I am waiting for a check from Tom. Then I will prepare an accounting and refund the money. Big Tim the check is in the mail. His payment was sent from my checking account since he does not have a papal account. I hate accounting. I just squeaked by in college when I took accounting for my law degree. Dominick
Let me tell you. I'm doing my accounting final on Saturday! Not interested AT ALL!
The Man
The check I received from the Huli Cat has cleared the bank. I need to refund $170.00 to David Hall, P.J., Ron Jones, Mike, Jurelometer, John Fishy, Steve William, Mati and Diane. I paid $1,966.10 out of pocket cost for the Rip Tide, bait and bags, tip and fish cleaning. I reimbursed myself. The total cost for each of the persons who were on the Rip Tide came out to $131.00 which included tip and fish cleaning. Therefore I have to reimburse each of you $39.00. Since all I have in most cases is an avatar name, please send me a paypal address or request for a personal check. Also let me know who you are since some of you hide behind your avatar. BTW since you have spent the money already may I suggest that you send me instructions in a P.M. to return the money to a paypal address or donate the funds to Discover Angling one of Alan's favorite organizations that gets underprivileged children out fishing. At any rate send me a P.M. to either refund the money or donate the money to Discover Angling in your name. This whole accounting is a nightmare for me because some of the members paid $170.00 to paypal by credit card of which I only received $164.77. This just confused things. I think I got it right. If I left you out let me know. If anyone sees a hole in this let me know. Dominick
Thanks for taking care that.
