I've seen a plastic one or two burst with mono. Loaded the way Dave indicates makes sense, but in a practical application where is one casting a jiggy 500 with light weights where plastic is advantageous over aluminum? There's no cast control other than thumb, so I can't really see doing much more than a good lob anyway on a boat-length rod with free line bait.

Always good to have more than one viewpoint.

Can't disagree too much.  I broke a plastic jiggy spool once when filling with fresh mono with too much tension.  Plastic was/is the least popular spool option.

So why plastic? The less weight, the less inertia. The less inertia, the less the spool will maintain RPMs as the payload slows - so less overrun to control on the cast.  True for any payload.  No experience with the Al spool plus  a cast control mechanism, but  plastic was the easiest for me on a jiggy with no cast control.

And these are really mono reels.  Just too big and too much braid capacity for the load that they can handle.  I guess that  I have more than one viewpoint on this myself :)

Reviving this old thread since this showed up in a box of stuff I picked up today:Sea Lake.jpg

I will say - it's kinda sexy.  Looking at the brochure above I only appear to have the "wide spool" version but this was pretty much an "extra" in the whole deal anyway.  Unlike many of my reels, no intention of making this even a "1-time" user - but is pretty cool and tight.  And coincidentally, earlier when I hit the World Wide Information Resource the first thing that popped up was a reference to this AT Thread.  Any thoughts or input from wiser Ohana? - john

There's a lot to be said for a minimalist build. There's nowhere to "hide". Nice work.

Do you have an example? I think it's a mistranslation as mentioned by Jason. It doesn't appear in Okuma's US material for the Alijos.

Alright guys,
This is NOT a cancelation. The trip is on, and it will be a blast! I can't say unfortunately, because it is good news; but with business taking off the way it is I'm out of resources to manage this trip (Alan warned me this would happen  :-\  )

Thankfully, our transplant and soon to be retired veteran Nick Poppen is going to stand in for me. He'll start posting regularly and figure out the game plan for collecting the fee.

i can't thank you enough, Nick; and I can't WAIT to see everybody in September. Remember, if you want to come in a day early, we have plenty of room at the resort.

I'm almost certain that the fast 349 and the 49 are both 3.2 6/0s. That is fast enough for just about anything; it's called a Wahoo special for a reason.

When I retired 3 1/2 years ago the layout on leave credits was substantial.   Even after stashing all I could in 401/457 it was large. That and some background issues I would be even Steven with the Internal Reaming Service this year. But now that mom passed away it's (as my tagline says) "It's not gonna be productive, but it's sure gonna be interesting."  And to top it off, my old labor organization won a wage lawsuit which also paid out this year.

I'm wondering if I can get something back on my old college tuition that I fully paid for in the 80's now that the government is paying off loans.
