Title: Grandpa's Senator 1/0 got serviced
Post by: jon_elc on September 28, 2019, 12:26:08 AM
dug this out of a garage cabinet drawer.  i don't think it's been used since the 1960s.  ordered some 6-60 washers from mysticparts and followed Alan's service tutorial on Senator 111.  found this beautiful handle in a box with rod clamps.  heh, check out the box (i just noticed right now when taking pics) !!

Nice one Jon.  The 1/0 is one of my favorites.  It looks like Grandpa had at least four Penns and took the clamp off all of them.  Can't blame him a bit.  Those things are always awkward and uncomfortable if you're holding the rod.  I have yet to see a photo of a rod with the reel seat demolished because the reel was yanked off of it (without clamps).  Seems like a belt and suspenders thing.

Cool, Jon. Good for Grandpa, sure wish more people would keep the box, accessories, and manual. I see $4.42 written on the box and $16.00 written on a sticker. Did your Grandpa buy it used? What kinda drag washers did it have?

Here's mine. I'm in the process of greasing and oiling everything for preservation as a shelfie. Came with leather drag washers. Darn, no manual. I'm pretty sure this one has never had line on it. The presence of part numbers means it is a post 1950 Penn.

Agree with Steve on the rod clamps, but only on the narrower Penns such as this one, the 2/0, Long Beach 60, Jigmaster 501, the extra narrow Jigmaster(P21 XN) that I have, etc. A narrow, larger Penn, such as a Sailfisher 130 or Mariner 349, i'd use a clamp.

Nice work on the 1/0s guys...good to see those reels still getting some love. I've spent a fortune narrowing and hot rodding Jigmasters while my little 1/0 sits there and laughs...it's actually the better choice for my fishing...some day I'll figure that out. :-\

good eyes, guys!  i guess they were leather washers?  I also a found a Squidder 145 in that drawer.   Here's a story about my Grandpa for you guys.  I never knew him.  I was born after he passed. i heard some stories about his fishing days from my mom, like he used to take her perch fishing on the SF piers.

My grandpa had 4 girls, and they all had girls (up until he died).  My dad (his son in-law) sort of inherited some of his old fishing gear, when we sold grandma's house, as the only fisherman at that time (i was about 8, i think, fishing a little trout with my dad).  Now that you mention it, I seem to remember seeing some big-#### Senators, but we never used them.

My dad mostly fished black bass and striped bass, so i imagine over the years he got rid of those larger reels, but kept these because (?).  I stopped fishing for many years (and started again this year) so i just started "inheritting" fishing gear from my mom's garage.   My mom found this pic of Grandpa with a striper (maybe in 1950s?)

You guys are making me envious , with those 1/0's...I've been "needing" one, but haven't found one that's "cheap enough to fit my reel budget", yet....maybe if I quit spending my "allowance" on 49's ???

That's a nice striper that "Gramps" has, too !

Absolutely three of my favorites, and I don't own a 145...but several each 140 and 146 and I'd prefer 145's.

Honestly, i was feeling a bit intimidated to use this reel, since it doesn't have a levelwind.  But after a couple of trips out rockfishing with Alan and Ben and Dominick, I started thinking why the hell not.

since i have this style 10-60 star drag, I got this 98-60CC sleeve and ultimate drag kit from mystic parts.

No levelwinder's kinda hard to get used to, especially if you go out and start gettin bit on your first trolls or drops.

  How sweet it is!

If you have a #10-66 drag star they look beastly on the little 1/0...along with a #24-56 power handle. 8)

getting that dog in place is the trickiest part. i was debating about that 24-56 power handle or a prochallenger eva knob.   Alan, you should never meet my wife again.  ;D

and it's back together.  I got this aluminum handle arm from mystic parts (gotta meet that free shipping limit) which i was thinking to pair with the EVA knob for balance.

Great work! I was gonna say teh same about the 10-66, but Mike got you on. The 1/0 is a pretty beefy reel for that lil star.

i think i should have put the dog spring the other way.  the dog clicks when I crank, but the sound (and pressure?) is softer than i remember.  it's still engaging the sleeve to prevent backwards motion, but it's very quiet.

That's not uncommon. In order to get a real strong click, straighten the spring and insert it behind the dog. Then wrap it around the post and into it's slot. It has more tension that way.

A gentle pressure on the dog could be a good thing, as long as it still works. I've seen a few dogs with too much wear, possibly due to excess spring pressure.

Dude, the photo of my main gear on page 1 looks so much flater than the pic. of your gear on page 2...? Optical(camara angle) illusion? The 1/0 Senator should have a 5-60 size main gear. The next common size up, the 5-66, comes in the 2/0 Senator and kinda looks deep like the one on page 2 in yours...?
Title: Re: Grandpa's Senator 1/0 got serviced

maybe if you clean all that brown guck off your gear....  i'm kidding  ;D

i think it's just the angle.  my pic has the 5 stack drag installed, and in my pic, it looks like 3 washers are visible above the gear, which leaves 2 washers inside the gear, so it's pretty flat.  my guess from memory would be about 5/16" total height of the gear itself?

The reel worked great today, even though it was tough to get a bite and the fish were small.  Fishing with this reel makes me feel more connected to the man I never met, and it makes my mom happy, too.

oh, so I learned something this week.  When you rebuild these old reels, buy and replace the spring washer (tension washer, belleville?).  It's cheap.

When I was putting this reel back together, there was some pressure that I had to put on it, to compress the bridge into place to place the dog spring in and secure the 4 screws holding the bridge.  and as my last photos show, I did take the reel out for rockfishing.

Obviously, it had enough drag for the day.

Since then, I rebuilt my Grandpa's old squidder, which also needed a new sleeve and so I went ahead and ordered a fine thread SS sleeve and drag star, with a Bryan Young ultimate drag stack.  Since the squidder spring washer was FLAT, I also ordered 3 replacements from Mystic (you know, in case you need one later on).   I put it all back together, but it was weird, the range of drag went from a very slight drag to what i couldn't pull line by hand.

Compared to this senator 1/0, which was basically free-spooling (for a couple of turns of the drag star) to "i can pull it by hand."  it was like 2x more drag on the squidder. At first, I thought it might be the fine thred sleeve vs. the course thread sleeve on the senator.

So i got my little pea-brain to work this week, and wondered if maybe my original senator spring washer was kinda smooshed like the squidder...  well, tonight I opened up the senator.  pics are kind of meh, but i think you can see there's some flatness to the original washer. the pic on the right is the new spring washer. the senator drag is much higher now...  i should take some pull on my zebco deliar to see how much drag in lbs. (its the only spring scale I have)

AND this might have been an oversight, or my misunderstanding:  I don't think those tension washers are supposed to be greased.. all the tutorials don't specifically mention greasing it: just greasing the drag stack and install the tension washer; dunno why I greased them. ???..  which would/could make that a drag surface, right? so it should be dry tension washers, so that the drag washers are the only lubed and drag surface.   i love getting better at getting that dog spring situated!

Can't see it making much of a difference. Except more corrosion resistance.

I'm thinking the drag stack height has some influence.

Hi Jon, the tension springs go rusty, Alan throws them away, also if you can get a delron washer between the tension sleeve & the star, that helps to turn the star easier, nice reel thanks for posting it, cheers Don

You can bend those curved tension springs a bit to give you a longer range of friction.  Maybe one extra revolution of the star between frees-pool and lock-down.  Doing so probably seals your fate though because it destroys some of the temper.  Every time they are bent they loose a little more temper and you loose a little more range in the drag.  Better to add more curved washers until you get the range you want.

When you button down the drag any grease where those curved washers meet is just rubbed or squished to the side.  There's a lot of force on a tiny bit of contact area.
