Hi All, I have disassembled a penn 9 peerless, I replaced all the drag washers and greased/oil the necessary parts and I'm now ready to reassemble the reel but can't get the main gear assembly to fit in the side plate?? What am I doing wrong ? I recently restored a penn 160l and a penn 940 and didn't have this issue. Is there a certain approach when installing the main gear assembly on the penn 9? Any help would be appreciated..
Thanks
Eddie

The "chrome" inner ring needs to come off, then you can re install it, after the "guts" are in the face plate......they sometimes fit pretty "snug", so you may need to gently "pry" it.
Eddie remove the chromed ring next time. It gets in the way when putting it back together. Put the ring on last.
Also put the left side with spool and right side with gears together with the level wind guard in place. You can put the worm gear in last.
Eddie,
I have gouged my finger enough times with a knife or pic trying to pry plates off.
Put it in the freezer for a few minutes, then try.
Use a butter knife or something not sharp.
I've cut the piss out of my hand several times getting in a hurry. ::)
Thanks S.H I will deff proceed with caution.
I will keep you guys posted.
Thx
Pry from around the edges, not from the center. Your ring is already a little bent and you can tap it flat with a piece of wood after it's off the side plate.

Got home at midnight and couldn't resist going down to my workshop and prying this faceplate off and i was rewarded for my efforts, it came off pryin on the edges (thx steve) i got it off using a nylon prybar set normally used to remove car interior panels.
Thanks everyone for all the words of wisdom can't wait to finish it up I have 2 more to go.
Yes Steve I did bend it a bit prying from the middle i will tap it back to shape thanks for the input kept me from smashing the plate even more.
Thks
Eddie

Hi All/ Handi-I finally had some time to try to assemble the penn 9 and had a difficult time doing so, wasn't sure when to install the dog & spring, i also had to figure out the correct placement of the dog and spring, i really struggled through it but managed to get the guts in and now the only part left is the worm gear and bars. The knob really does alot of squeaking tried some reel x hope it works..
Success! Good job Eddie, the reel looks great. 8)
looks Great !!
Its that little dog and spring that gives all of us trouble :'(
that levelwind was playing hardball also!! >:(
yeah, i use a rubber band to hold the reel together while i shimmy the levelwind assembly into place. :-\
i will deff try the rubber band approach i have 2 more to service! thank you for sharing..

the knob makes so much noise(squeek)any tricks to shut this knob up? fishing all day listening to that is going to get me thrown overboard ;D
I have tried to oil no luck.
Is the knob "tight" when you spin it ? You should be able to "flick" it with your finger, and get several revolutions (quiet ones !), if it IS tight, and considering the "squeak"....the oil isn't getting where it needs to go....probably due to corrosion / "crud" build up. If your "oiler" ball is loose (able to depress it to allow entry of the lube) , keep oiling...using a "light " oil (Reel X is what I use, but, stay away from "Liquid Wrench", as it will soften the plastic knob !) and try getting some lube into the "knob sleeve" from the other end (where it meets the "flat blade" of the handle assembly ). That *usually* works for me...but, if it still won't loosen up, and accept lube....you may need to give it a "short soak"in some white vinegar (50/50 with water , for an hour) and see if that takes some of the corrosion out.
yes the knob is tight and does not spin when i flick it. I will give the vinegar soak a try!! the oiler ball is seized i have made several attempts with Reel X. thank you for the info!!!

you might heat the metal to metal with heat gun or hairdrier to ease the oil into it; don't melt knob if you use a heat gun.
Possibly a safer option to heat the metal near the nob, would be holding a soldering iron on the metal, cheers Don.
I think I have one I will deff give it a try thx
Don is spot on there.
Eddie, is your handle working?
i have been so busy with work ive had zero time to work on my reels, i just soaked it in vinegar last night and i will take a look at it tonight.
thank your for asking!
The vinegar soak worked!!!!! no more squeeking and im able to depress the oiler ball !!!!! Thank you gents!!!!! I have completed all three 9m reels and it's on to the next!!! I must add the 9m reels deff the biggest pain to work on thus far for me!!! >:(.. Next up is my penn 320gt i am considering doing some upgrades any suggestions ?
I asked because I had an identical handle standing by if it didn't work.
Better living thru chemistry...

Read the words of the master on your 320, he will put you on the right track! http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=9.0
Oh wow can't wait to get started on this 320gti
Super detailed tutorial thanks for the link!!!
Just wanted to share my current body of work ;D.
Nice. I see the priority mail bag, lol. I still buy reels just to see if I can repair them. Don't need another one at all.
I guess I sold my 320's off. I still have the 310GTi sitting here. Well built reels I used for everything for years. Rockfish, butts, Leopard sharking, sturgeon.
That 320 of yours is a great reel.
