I was looking at the 270 spool , the one with 6 screws and the little key washer on top . After taking it apart i decided to make a new center section .
I wanted to make it were i can put drag washers and frictions in it . That started the thought process of what to do with the top of the spool , do i cut it ,or make a new

Time to make drag washers . Stainless steel fender washers was the stock to start with , .030 thousandths thick , 1 inch width
Made 6 of each keyed and eared .

Yep all those washers fit in there 9 steel and 9 fiber , .580 stacked height well is .610 depth . I used old frictions for test fit , they are about .025 each .
i will use .50 and some .70 mm sheets to make the rite size washers.

Am I gettin' this straight? You made a whole new spool for this reel? Did it in a way that increased the drag size? I find that way better than McGiver--way better. Extremely impressive. Looks like all aluminum body.

A simple jig to hold the washers and a few cuts with a scroll saw to make the tongue washer , with a needle file clean up..

I was paid 20 dollars to haul that junk away some 38 years ago , i can still see that big smile on that guys face .
Sad part was he got rid of the junk that went with it already , the change gears for setting up threads per inch feed.
Spooled up with 100 pound braid 160 yards , on both spools . .090 thousandths difference in width of spools.
Just a little hour glass on the stock spool .
Spooled up 40 pound braid .015 dia 330 yards
Difference between the two pictures is .020 under spool shim.
Playing with the 4 screw spool . Deeper well added a eared washer and 2 frictions .
the center section has a dead air space of about .080 , so if you want to stretch the spool drop in a big spacer.
Made a 330 spool .080 wider than stock plastic spool , the aluminum spools are a little smaller .
I put a tenon on the base so i can lengthen or shorten the arbor length with shims if needed .
Instead of a click gear i made a large friction base . I was also able to use a early brake spindle to make 3 total height adjustments .
I still need to cut a little more so i can use stock size drag washers . And dish the top a little more for the brake nut to go down a little more .
The bail just clears the nut at full stroke rite now.
I did a test with 10 pound braid to see if i was in the ball park

The line lay I achieved and the braking quality are better than on most new expensive solutions.
Drag sistem with cork is the best possible on such reels!

I like the drag you did under the spool and copied it . Still working on making it fit under the stock bail assembly .
I still like oil lite bushings in the spool .
As of now i am playing with cork , gasket material . The problem with cork is that it is so thick .065 - 1.65mm . Takes up valuable space were carbon fiber will be easy to fit on a already tall spool . It takes time to fine tune home made parts. ;D
With the idea of making a bigger spool to help with the hour glass effect , i went back to the stock spool configuration and though how to make the reel think the spool was taller . Change the oscillating stroke ! I moved the crank pin closer to center by .070 . The first 2 picture is the stock stroke with the hour glass . The 3 picture is the first try spooling with a gess at shims . i see a improvement 4 picture is the gear .
You can replace the cork with a thinner sheet of carbontex, but then you need to add a thin stainless steel pad under the spool and fix it (you can use epoxy glue, resistant to high temperatures).
My choice was cork because it is easy to obtain and I am convinced that it has better characteristics than carbontex for my needs.
The solution with moving the pin on the main gear is the only possible solution and you did a great job!
Once upon a time I had the idea to add a ball bearing to that pin but it's a long story...
The only thing I would do now on the 330N and 331N is to achieve silent braking on the rotor. It requires good planning and a little more experimentation. Of course, I do not intend to insert one-way bearing. I'll try something else ...
Think about it and let's come to a solution together!
Spun another spool from billet for a 331n model ,all one piece with a bottom plate for a large cork drag washer and a small cork top drag washer .
Just another combination to try out !!

Back at it again , I needed a spool for a 440 . I pretty much duplicated a plastic spool .
I did stretched the length another .060 for braid .

I was thinking about that . I went with the idea that the clicker only has less than 1 square inch of surface area and i wanted to try this new carbon fiber out . IT is not as flexible as what i have used in the past and feels slicker . I am trying this material dry . First test looks good !!!!

OK challenge accepted.............. Spool for 220 and 221 .
But i am not going to build one from scratch , more like a retro fit of a already made spool.
My choice is a penn 712z spool to use , and use all of it , drag stack and the plastic clicker finger .
The penn spool is going to need a little trimming . The quick spool is 2.175 inches diameter and the penn is 2.235 inches diameter .
The penn bore is going to need a bushing so that the quick axle assembly fits snug . This is a stock item brass tube made by K&S # 8134 ,it is
11/32 diameter , a 5/16 bolt about 2 1/2 inches long a few washers and a nut . There is 2 3/8 nuts used for spacers

Ok there is a hole in the bottom of the spool that need a little attention . This is were a 5/16 flat washer will be used . Now with that said it will help that you have a selection of different brands washers because they vary in size standards . Metric washer may help also .
Picture will explain were i am going with this . The hole is tapered so washer will stop at different places . If the washer is below flush by 20-30 thousands or closer ,i think that is a good start with when you shimming for line lay latter on .
These pictures shows 2 washers that fit differently , were as one has a little more diameter than the other and is stacked to get near flush
I chucked this spool on the lathe and removed the .060 in diameter .
But there could be another way ..............
When you are ready to assembly check your bottom friction and shim , flush or higher to start . Install axle and start testing....

Well I just came back to this 440 spool project, I had the mother spool of line still hanging on with about 150 yard left on the spool . Kept looking at the line lay and still though there was room for improvement

As of now my spool is .070 thick in the floor , were as the stock plastic spool is .100 .
What that means is that my spool is going down .030 deeper in the rotor .
Yet looking at the pictures , I see that the top of the line lay could go up more and I could get rid of the bottom bulge .

I have a .020 friction between spool and click gear , so I removed the friction and stripped and rewound the spool again . What a improvement that made , and it ate up the the rest of the line on the mother spool .

Ok another .020 needs to come off the bottom of the spool . I am a little hesitant about cutting a full width 20 thousands . I could do a counter bore for just the width of the friction / click gear . I have this idea that I may put that click paw and spring assembly on also . That pin has a .100 leg , so a .050 floor is not in my favor . So now I am thinking shimming the rotor up would do the same thing . I remove the rotor and looking at the main bearing retainer , wavy spring and shim . I'm thinking how thick is the shim and spring . It's .020 combined , now I removed the main bearing and put the spring and shim in the well first followed by the main bearing and retainer , that will put the rotor 20 thousands higher .

Reassemble everything , stripped the spool again and cranked the line on under a load .
648 yards of 20 pound braid on and i think it looks good .

I was going thru some reels and found a split spool on my 550 that had mono and stock drags .
The last time i used it , I did give it a good work out on big Amber jacks and nurse sharks .
I most likely left the mono wrapped to tight on the spool and after loosing the drag , jacked the spool apart .
