Title: Boat gas seperating, need help
Post by: Three se7ens on October 12, 2013, 02:52:50 AM
My buddies boat that we usually take offshore only made it 300 hds from the dock last time we had it out.  Trying to troubleshoot it now, and decided to check the gas coming from the fuel pump because it looked murky in the clear fuel filter.  It came out murky, and settled into this after 5 min.  The 2 stroke oil and stabil are both blueish, so everything should be the color of the layer on top.  Both the top and bottom layers are primarily gas, but it seems like the 2 stroke oil is only mixing with part of the gas.

Anyone have any ideas or thoughts?

Ethanol phase separation ?

This boat has never had gas put in without marine sta-bil.  And this is from an 80 gallon tank, with 20 gal put in recently, but again with sta-bil and 2 stroke oil.

Is sta-bil capable of dispersing so much water as to cause this?  Just how much water would have to be in the tank to cause this?

Looks like Ethanol phase separation. Stabil can't fix it. Here is a quote from one site:

"With ethanol-enhanced gasoline, however, once phase separation occurs, additives and water separators can't help; the only remedy is to have gasoline/ethanol/water pumped from the tank."

Once separation has ocurred, the resulting mixture is very corrosive.

startron enzyme additive is supposed to "reformulate" the gas! Might try it?... Steve
