I picked up a used 505HS in decent condition except the it was tight when cranking. I quickly realized that it was caused by the spacing sleeve that it came with. It is Brass and exactly 10 MM long. Problem is that is too thick and " chokes" the Gear sleeve. The reel works great when I use a standard
9-60 S.S. Sleeve ( without the Star Drag on). I can not seem to find a 9-60 that is 10mm. Closest is 10.74 and it is too long, making it hard the thread the star drag on , and star drag is inoperable when handle is put back.
Any advice ?
Welcome aboard Anthony.
Have you checked the drag configuration?
It seems unusual as the standard spacing sleeve is 12mm, meaning 10.74 should fit with room to spare.
There may be an extra tension spring washer under the spacing sleeve.
Let us know how you go.
Good luck, Justin
Thanks , I will re-check the Drag configuration. What is unusual is that someone that had this reel , put the Brass 10mm sleeve in there, and I don't see one anywhere. I guess if the drag is correct, I will file it down as suggested.
Checking the drag stack is a good idea. I have a PG 255 with a 5 stack drag and the spacer had to be filed to get the right fit. A brass spacer was originally used but later a 10.74MM spacer was used and filed down to get the right fit.
I don't see anyting wrong with filing down the spacer, I've done it a few times before. Some like to pull out the belleville on top, I personally like to live it in.
Good luck to you, Sal
FYI, www.mysticparts.com has 9-60 spacing sleeves of various lengths. However, if I don't find the length I need in my parts bin, I'll get out the file. In order to trim the sleeve evenly I lay the (12" mill) file flat on the workbench and drag the sleeve across it. It's the easiest way for me to keep the end square.
Good luck with it.

I believe Newell included a brass sleeve with some of their gearsets. I would definitely check the drag setup and gearset before proceeding any further
Just checked a NIB 505hs sleeve which measured 10.95mm/0."432 whereas the standard sleeve (9-60) as recommended in parts list measures 12.70mm/0."50. I would check the drag stack configuration as previously recommended as something appears to be amiss there.
this is what i was looking for.....

With the new drag material is it as imporntant to back the drag off all of the way as it was with the older materials? A few of my older reels have a slight load when the star is backed all the way out and I haven't noticed any compression of the drag washers....so far.
At $1.75 each this is a cheep fix.
Thanks to all. Ended up filing down the shortest sleeve from SBT . Gear Stack seems correct , so why a standard sleeve did not work is a mystery.
Anyway, the reel works beautifully now
Glad you got it sorted. The next on will be easy. ;D
