Title: Navarre 2017
Post by: Shark Hunter on April 24, 2017, 01:39:43 PM
I stayed up all night Saturday prepping my Terminal Tackle.
I'm two weeks out, and chomping at the bit.
My picture looks cloudy.
It is from my Vaping Habit.
I apologize, but it is much better than smoking.

Good luck brother. These are on the way; do with them as you wish. I fitted them to my 14/0 on #4 Aftco butt. Depending on what rig you use them on, you may need to rat tail the relief channel a bit more and tune the hooks. You can always take off but not put back. Looking forward to report.

I'm not feeling any pressure. It is what it is.
I'm just happy to spend some relaxing time on the sand with my family and have another try.
I've earned it.
It is Vacation and anything more than that is just a bonus.
White Sand and Cold Beer!
And Hopefully a 10 footer. ;)
I don't think that is too much to ask for. ;D

Daron, I'm going to show my ignorance of shark fishin' by asking a question. How do you get the bait out there? I can't see someone chunkin' a 12/0 Senator! :D Maybe similar to how some folks here catfish...they take the bait/line out in a kayak or rowboat. Sure sounds like a blast...one of these days I need to try it. 8)

The White sand is first, Then the cold beer to dull my senses so I can paddle 300 yards into shark infested waters with a bloody bait dripping out the back, Then a 10 footer if it all comes together. That will sober you up pretty quick.

It is a lot less crowded.

I will make my choices on the Arsenal this coming weekend.

Title: Re: Navarre 2017
Post by: Shark Hunter on April 27, 2017, 05:34:44 AM
I am well prepared for both Steve.
I even broke down and got me a full head screen boonie hat.
No Bugs are going to run me off the Beach this time.
If they are biters, I will don Jeans and a long sleeve shirt with the full face screen and gloves.
I have learned that some of the night time Biting bugs in Florida are immune to 30% deet. They swim in it and bite you anyway.
They come in swarms and get in your ears and nose.
Usually late at night with a breeze blowing, it brings them out of the dunes looking for a bite.
If My Wife is with me, this will send her running back to the condo. I mean a total swarm. Hundreds, if not thousands of bugs going up and down your fishing pole, crawling all over you, trying to find whatever they are looking for covering everything.
I try to wait them out. It depends on how much beer I have left, and If I am alone or not, and what time it is.
Since I am the only person left, they swarm me, bite me, and worst of all, they try to get in my beer.
I just drink it down and wait for them to leave. They will if it is just a swarm.
I just jump in the pool on my way back to the room to rid me of these pests.
Then wash my reels down in the outside shower, and wait for tomorrow evening to try it again.
There will be no Crazy. Unless I get that 10 footer.
Then I will do a little Crazy Dance.
If I don't. Life goes on.
My annual Vacation is all that keeps me sane.
That, and a few beers after work.
I thank you all for the well wishes.
I just want to relax on the sand and put a few Sharks on it for a brief moment, and then send them on their way.
Bugs and Beasts are my relaxation. ;)

Sometimes the Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil will repel sand gnats when DEET will not.  Big fat stogies help repel too and make you smell like a big fat stogie rather then bath oil.

Mr. Shark, have you tried the fabric softener sheet trick? (Bounce) I have no idea if it works, but Google turns up a lot of anecdotal evidence. At least it's inexpensive to try...  8)

Title: Re: Navarre 2017
Post by: Shark Hunter on April 28, 2017, 03:52:26 AM
Aiala,
The biting flies and bugs that come out of the dunes are almost like mutants.
They are immune to any kind of spray repellant.
You also have to be careful with deet, because it attacks plastic.
I will try the fabric sheet, anyway just to see. Gnats really aren't a problem.
The bugs that attack are usually bigger than a Gnat.
One stretch of Beach I fish in the Bay when the surf is too rough, is pretty Narrow.
They come out of the tall grass at night and bite the piss out of you.
I'm going to try a new trick if I decide to go there again and use a fogger.
A big can that you spray around the perimeter.
I have used it at home before a party, when the mosquitos were bad and it worked great.
I think with the face net and the full clothing, I will be ready.
It gets kind of cool in Early May on the Beach at night anyway.

Lawd have mercy, Mr. Shark! You are one tough hombre to endure that.  :P  I wouldn't be able to stand it; luckily, on my long-range trips there's zero chance of being bugged... the little horrors don't like it 100 miles out at sea.  ::)

It doesn't matter if the beast shows up or not. It is the time spent with mother nature and getting away from the hustle and bustle of daily life that matters. Having said that, if you do have a chance to play tug of war with a monster than that makes it all the better.
Hope you have a great vacation.

You know those sharks like to come in on a rising tide at night, expecially if you've got a full moon and some wave action.  Target rip areas (any deeper channel with offshore flow).

You look ready to roll.

Have you tried a beach cart that attaches through the scupper holes? Super easy to put it on and take it off. I have that same kayak and I pull it down the beach. Won't help with stairs though.

It's 81 degrees down here in Marathon. Hooked up on two tarpon today. Jumped one and got the other one to my kayak. Walked it under the train bridge. Guy in the boat next to me jumped a monster. Fishing seems to be heating up. The bugs are bad. Been using OFF deepwoods and it's not even phasing them.

I wish I was allowed to build a fire on the beach.
A good fire would take care of those Mutant Bugs.
I'm just going to try and stay covered.
They really aren't a problem at night, until the wind starts blowing.
Then they come out of the dunes and all hell breaks loose.
Long sleeve shirt, Jeans, Gloves and sand socks with a Full face net boonie hat.
This time next week, I'll deal with that. ;)
Title: Re: Navarre 2017

I thought I had seen the worst of them until last night. I was camped out down in the Everglades. They had a sign stating that there are 34 different types of mosquitoes in that park...... That's not including the noseeums, flies, and spiders. There were so many spiders that when I shined my headlamp at the ground it looked like sparkling glitter. It was really the eyes of the spiders reflecting back at me.......
Title: Re: Navarre 2017
Post by: Shark Hunter on May 02, 2017, 06:16:40 AM
I don't have a problem with spiders, but I'm not sleeping with them.
I would break out a can of WD-40 and a lighter and go hillbilly flamethrower.
Then zip that tent up tight.
The deal with the bugs in Florida, I can deal with, because when I'm done doing battle with them. I can go back to my condo, and forget about it.
Jump in the pool, take a shower, wash off my reels and be ready for the next day.
My camping days are over.
When I've had enough, I go back to my condo. No Bugs, No spiders.
Just the AC, a Cold beer, Grill out some Steaks, and maybe some TV.
I'll do battle with them for so long. I have a refuge. It is only a few steps away. ;)

The camping has been great man. I get where you are coming from though. When I'm a bit older I will probably have the same mindset and go the condo route.

I will always invite a member of the family to fish with me.
Anytime from May 9th to the 18th.
Due to my circumstances, I can't provide lodging. The condo is only so big, and I'll have my family with me.
If it were my house, you could stay as long as you wish.
I can provide bait, Kayak, a beach chair and a few cold ones with and a tricked out reel for an afternoon, or as long as you want to go into the night.
There are cheap hotels nearby.
The Best Western in Navarre is my go to in September.
Its less than a mile from my condo.
It is up to you.
I will be there, and I always appreciate company.
My wife and son have different objectives.
I try to keep it all in harmony.
Send me a pm if you want to fish.
I don't own a cell phone, so that is the only way to contact me.

No cell phone!?, Man what's that like? How's an ohana guy like yourself get away with it?
I held off for years, then discovered as I took over my aging parents care, that everyone and their mother expected to be able contact me whenever/wherever at a moments notice. Parental unit at that time totaly unreliable to get nessassery info. for call-backs, etc. on their homephone. Then I got married and it got worse. I believe the people who developed the "cell phones for everyone" concept knew what a great selling point it'ed be for wife's wanting to track down their husbands whenever/wherever.
Now I'm stuck with the thing, but it does come in handy as I don't have home landline.

The snot grass moved in last night. I didn't realize how bad it was until we went to check our lines.
It dragged my 14/0 line all the way back to the beach with a 1lb spider weight on it.
Took at least 20 minutes per line for Robin and me to remove it.
I'm waiting it out. I can still surf fish around it.

I appreciate it my man.
Despite no Shark last night, I had an amazing day on the beach.
Sunny and 82 Degrees, Very light wind and an ocean as smooth as a lake.
Surf fishing was a bust, despite me wading out some 100 yards and casting just as far.
My Wife and son in Tow, the shelling is always amazing in Navarre.
Me and Robin put out some big pieces of Ray last night probably 200 yards out.
I'll be back for them, but after a 14 hour day on the sand, I'm ready to relax today.
My Son's Guinea Pigs are always with him, no matter where we go. ::)
We Grilled out some Burgers and corn tonight and I just took it easy. Life is Good. ;)

I typically find that if there is an onshore breeze, the seaweed will make things unfishable. If there is an offshore breeze, it will blow all the junk back to sea. On days with a ton of weed, I've been fishing the lagoon.

A lot of the surf fish will hang out right in the shallows close to shore. You don't necessarily have to throw it out as far as you can. Depends on the spot though.

For surf fishing, I've been fishing a high low rig with floats on the hooks (pompano rig). Pyramid sinker on the bottom. A pyramid or sputnik sinker will dig into the sand and hold bottom. The round bank/egg sinkers sinkers will roll around with the tide and current and end up back on shore. Been using either whole dead shrimp or live sand fleas. The shrimp fly off the hook easy so I use that Atlas bait floss to secure it to the hooks.

I've also fished whole mullet in the surf on a fishfinder rig and hooked a bunch of bluefish and a few tarpon. The tarpon seem to like to hang out near the inlets.

Never did that one before Benni.
You obviously catch more fish than me, so I'll give it a whirl.
I just need to make sure my son isn't around, or he will dive in after it. ;)
I'm having a great time either way.
The shark fishing is just something I've incorporated into our family Vacation.
I know they are there, so what the heck.
It did some serious storming here today.
Stocked up the fridge and took the Family out for a nice Dinner.

A shark would just be a bonus...enjoy it!

Stay fishy and keep the faith, Big D!

I'm trying Dom.
Gearing up for last night.
Dropped the first bait about 930 pm. 500 yards out. A mid section of Blackfin on the 14/0. At least a 2lb bait. 14/0 Gama hook with 500lb wire and cable slider.
Robin took the head of it and ran it out about 300 on the 12/0. Then the wind really started picking up. I was wearing jeans, but that cold wind made me feel like I was naked.
The lines were tight and we settled in hoping for Jaws to stop by. He didn't show. The crabs completely devoured both our baits.
I called it about three am. Sharking is tough sometimes. :-\

Daron, if you go kayaking chunks of fish out in that stuff you might as well put a hook in your leg and go swimming.
Stay fishy, but not that fishy, ;)

Well Guys and Gals,
I'm back home in Kentucky. Safe and Sound. Sharkless Again!
The Sea Grass was the biggest problem. It just makes the beach unfishable.
You can try, but it will bring your line back to the beach with snot all over your line.
A one lb claw weight is as big as I go.
Not fun at all cleaning it off.
I could have went to the pier and caught a small fish to say it wasn't a skunk. but I think that's cheating.
In the past, We have run up and down the coast trying to find a better spot. I'm done with that.
If they are not In the Ocean in front of where I'm staying, I'll try again tomorrow. I think its just spinning your wheels and wasting energy, gas and precious vacation time.
I'm not making excuses. I just want something capable of testing my gear. We still had a great time with great weather.
Great Food and just plain time relaxing with my feet in the white sand.
Got to spend a few evenings on the beach with Robin. (Army of One)
A really good down to earth Family Guy. When I say evening, I mean 8 in the evening until about 4 am.
The guy is a trooper, and had to get back to send his kids to school in the morning.
I feel I'm a pretty good judge of Character, and this guy is as good as they come. We also made a few trades.
A Nice 10/0 for a 12/0 build of my own for him, and a Nice Rapala Boga Grip for a Submersible Pelican light.
I didn't get to meet up with Keith or Bob. I regret that. I'm sure they will forgive me and we will meet again. We just couldn't connect, its hard with no cell phone. I still refuse to own one.
One more neat thing that happened on this Vacation. A Leather Back Turtle laid her eggs right I front of the walkway to the beach outside our condo. This Turtle is Not a Native Species of this area. This was really neat. This is a 700 lb turtle, capable of diving to over 3000 feet.
I'll be back in four months to try again.
Thanks for cheering me on, but it wasn't in the cards. I can handle it, and loved every minute of it! ;)
Daron

Glad to hear you and the family had a good time Daron, the shark will need to wait a little longer...no biggie.

Vacationing at Sanibel a while back, I was amazed to see how well of a job they do, to make sure the turtles are not bothered in any way.
Beach lights go out early in the evening, not to disturb them as they come in to lay the eggs.
Leatherbacks are some amazing creatures.

I'm glad your back safe.

Sal

I'm glad you made it home safe.  You left and the panhandle went to Hell.  Sorry we couldn't get you a shark.  I was sure the fear I had kayaking out the bait would draw them in.  ;)  We look forward to having you back, so stay safe and keep your arsenal ready!

Daron, could you just break out a rocket? or a drone?

Bait delivery systems might be a nice business.

That water looks like a lot of exercise.

There was only one bait delivery system I needed on this trip.
Its Name was Robin. ;D The Guy is a Kayaking Machine.
That last night, The waves got to about 5 foot out on the first bar.
He was hell bent to try it. I wouldn't let him.
The waves and current were so bad, I made one cast with My Fin Nor LT-100 and an 8 oz claw weight.
It was back on the beach in less than a minute.
Even if he did make it past the waves, the sea grass would have pulled it right back.
It was a no win situation.
If that Kayak gets flipped end over end, You have major things to worry about. The Kayak could hit you on the head and knock you out, You could get hooked with the main line still attached to the Kayak. Then you would have a human sized bait with a giant bobber. Plus it is Dark.
You have to keep your head and make the right decision. I always break a glow stick and tie it on the back of my life jacket. If its going to be a long drop, I tie another to the back of the Kayak.
My Goal is to make it back home in one piece with no one getting hurt and nothing breaking down. That is a success every time in my book. ;)
I've never seen the grass that bad this early in the season.
There is no other way to get a bait out that far, when it weighs a couple pounds.
It would take a small craft like a Zodiac or a Jet Ski to do it any more efficiently.
All of our gear has to be carried to the beach by hand. Then bait paddled out.
Its a lot of work, but you have to be half crazy to try this anyway.
The year isn't over yet. >:(

The Big Boys are always Hungry Rick.
We just didn't cross paths.
The Ocean is a Big Place.
Especially the Gulf, where all kinds of marine life come together.
I am just a tiny grasshopper looking for a giant. ;)

That Grill was a rusted piece of Junk.
I can Grill on anything, even if it is only a fire and a grate.
There was a 12" hole in the center of the bottom.
I bought a cheap aluminum pan to hold the Charcoal and grilled 1" thick ribeyes and baked potatoes on that rust bucket a few times.
The top grate was in good condition.
That was all I needed. ;)
I grilled out the same last night and it was a lot easier on My $100 Charbroil gas grill.
It is only the second grill I have ever owned.
Charbroils are made of Aluminum and never rust out. You just have to give them a tune up now and then.
