How can you determine the Line Wt. Range & Lure Wt. Range for an "unknown" fishing rod or rod blank that is "completely unmarked", with no clue as to make or model ?

Search on here for Alan's method of determining rod rating. Consider yourself lucky, blank slates are fun. Basically, rig up a reel with 15 pound or bigger line on it and start lifting stuff. When the rod bends as much as you want you have your drag rating for that rod. Multiply the weight by 3 or 4 depending on how you fish and that is the line weight you should fish the rod at.

Interesting . . . A little hard to do when picking rods "out of a barrel" of mixed blanks at a liquidator.

Take some calipers and check the tips and butt sizes and compare them to some of the common brands for a rod the same length as a starting point. It still would be a lot of guesswork. Of course you would also have to try ans determine if the blank is all glass or composite. Anyway, here is a sample of Calstar Grafighter sizes copied from Charkbait. I think places like Mudhole lists sizes for many brands and types of blanks. Tip sizes are measured in 64ths of a inch. After you narrow them down, then perhaps you can load them for the bend test.
Sounds like a fun challenge.

Of course the "action" of the blanks would come into play, too ... I'm afraid it might vary quite a bit from maker to maker.
I hate "limber tip" rods that collapse easily, yet still have stiff butt sections ( like many Ugly Stik's, for example )
