What are your fishing goals for 2023?
Mine......
catch a yellowtail on a surface iron
catch a halibut
catch a bft over 150/200#
help my friend catch his first bft
I'm sure there's more but that's all I got for now.....
In 2020 my goal was to catch a cobia. It's now '23 and I haven't done it yet. Maybe this year.
I don't think i kept a single fish in 2022. Maybe this year I won't putz around with tackle as much in the garage, in favor of actually using it.
#1, I want to just keep fishing. #2, Don't make wimpy excuses not to go. Being an hour away from the surf and having the health and means to do it, there should be very few reasons not to get in it. I worked a long time for somebody else. This is my time. No more "work/life balance", just life balance. :cf :fish

I have done all 4 of these.
My goals,
#1 Fish
#2 Catch several wahoo
#3 Catch several YT
#4 Catch a BFT over 400#
#4 is optional as I would rather see people that have not caught plus size tuna catch one.
300 pound puerto vallarta yellowfin, 25 pound local ling cod, 2 pound perch. ;D
Got out at 0800 NY day, was in asleep at 1000pm NYE so as not to have cobwebs. Caught two nice bass by 830, but was striper fishing. Flat calm, 60 degrees, some cool fog, only four other boats to be seen. Great start to build on.
-put my boat back in saltwater.
-get on any boat in saltwater. Life got in way in 2022.
-finish outstanding rod / reel work. Don't take any more in, lol.
-catch fish.
-eat said fish.
John
Quit getting so blasted old.
See Alijos again.
Catch (or at least see someone catch) an opah.
A wahoo would be nice.

Besides the usual of just getting out more, I picked up an old Johnson 2-stroke outboard awhile back & I want to get it running. It sat for awhile out on a farm and I have little idea how good a mill it is. It turns over and most of the parts are there as near as I can tell. I will work on it myself, and if nothing else, will learn some new things along the way.

Service my reels, breakdown and strip 6 3-piece surf rods, get them ready for rewrap in conventional configuration from spinner configuration (buy and kit parts) then ship them to Hawaii for wrapping (as the rods will stay there once done), look for a few more Newell 338s to pair up with the 13' surf rods, maybe one more Newell 344 to pair up with the. last 14' surf rod, pour casting weights,...
Oh, is it fishing goals or fishing equipment goals???
Quote from: Bryan Young on January 04, 2023, 10:53:50 PMOh, is it fishing goals or fishing equipment goals???
Both!
In that case,
#1 Clean shop, it makes Alan's look neat.
#2 Sell 20-30 (or more) reels to help pay for 2023 fishing.
#3 Work on my own reels.
#4 Cry over the boxes of old used and NOS parts that got burnt in the fire.
Catch more spend/drive less
I had to think about this one.
Not possible to put numbers on it, fish are just too unpredictable.
1. Have fun and enjoy the outdoors, observe and learn while fishing.
2. Relax while doing it.
3. Increase my Tag and Release numbers.
4. Have hips and knees fixed to be able to fish for another 10 years..... I hope.
5. Catch Yellowtail at varied shore places.
6. Catch more squid.
I'm hoping to get on some pike this year and maybe some north Idaho channel cats.
My biggest goal is just to fish more. Most of last year I didn't fish because I was focused on helping the kids fish and catch stuff. Most of them are getting pretty skilled at doing most of it themselves now, so I will feel more comfortable about bringing my own rod along. :D
1-Catch more Citation Drum than I caught last year
2-Catch at least one 50" or higher Drum (measurements at the Fork)..Caught at least one for the last 4 years prior, zero for 2022. All out of the surf.
3-Still waiting for that Cobia out of the surf.
I just picked up an Ocean City 940 Topsail, I tore it down and cleaned it all up. Of course, the reel was dirty, old (black tar looking) grease made the handle turn super sluggish. But once it was all cleaned up it runs smooth as butter. Every part was like new and showed little if any use! My goal for 2023?... to catch a pike over 38" with it. Hoping for over 40"!!! I haven't taken any pictures of the reel after cleaning it all up, but I can add some if anyone would like. I believe it's a 1957? Please correct me if i'm wrong. Thanks and good luck with your 2023 goals!!!Ocean City Topsail 940 02BBBB.jpg
An alligator gar. The river near my house flows to the Mississippi, unfortunately, I found a mutilated gar on the beach. I wasn't sure that it was an alligator gar so I took a picture and Consulted internet. I had thought we were to far north in Memphis but they are here. I've been reading up on how. Hope to this summer!
Mike
1. catch a yellowfin over 186lbs.
2. Catch a local BFT over 100lbs.
3. Go fishing as much as I possibly can.
4. go bass fishing with my grandson.
:d
I would like to heal up enough to fish, but when I do I have the following on the bucket list in no particular order:
1. Another wahoo, bigger than my last
2. Another white sea bass, bigger than the last
3. My first halibut
4. My first albacore
5. Organize the shop to properly store my reels since I got evicted from the den. Currently have 3 boxes of reels to be stored
Fish more!!! I have 17 trips to the Channel Islands booked starting in April. Hope to add a few to morro bay and local cod trips with the SPJ gearI built a few more long steelhead rods for surf fishing that I need to break in. Hope I don't get fired for taking so much time off

Halibut Bill? If we are talking California variety this may be an excuse for us to fish. If you want the larger Pacifics, that's Todd's territory.....
Resist killing too tasty lookin reef fish and NOT capsize.

More halibut, sure they're tasty!
Big BFT? Been there done that... how about a 60#+ Wahoo!
I've been telling myself for years to get out early in the season (before muskie opens) to fish Gar pike. The Ottawa has world class Gar - 50" plus. I just have to make more excuses to go than not LOL.

Go-out with Allan and crew. They'll get ya better at fighting big tuna or drive you nuts tryin!😄.
@farmer56 It sounds like we would get along very well! I love chasing giant Pike and all the different ways to catch them. My biggest Pike or PB that I've caught was a 42" big shouldered 22 pounder up in Geraldton, Ontario. The sad part of that particular day was that I had 5 giant fish all stacked in one small area, tucked up on the outside edge of a pretty big section of Lilly pads that were right next to deep water. These fish were ALL above 40", and I'm certain one was close to 50". My problem was that at that time (young guy) I didn't own an actual sturdy Pike or Musky set up. I was using my old fiberglass 5'6' Lews Speed Stick with a ABU 5500c and 14lb test!!! If I could go back in time that would have been an epic day on the water...no doubt.
Farmer56 you're in a great area to catch a giant Pike and I hope that 2023 is your year! My father was a tremendous fisherman and hunter...a true outdoorsman, who raised 3 boys to really appreciate nature...I believe you're on the right path of doing the same with your kids. I do have that Pike mounted on my wall, but since those days I am a Catch and Release guy. Catch, Photo and Release! Good luck #Farmer56!

the year is coming to an end, now for the excuses as I have not achieved much :
Have been laid up for 4 month after a hip operation
Only fixed one hip, lots more pain to be repaired
One of my boat fishing buddies is seriously ill, he won't likely be on a boat again
Weather has not played ball
Squid has been poor and also need boat for that
:-[ :-[ :-[
Sorry to hear about your fishing buddy! And, you are correct...'23 is going to be "history" before we know it, but.......my wife and I got back to the island, yesterday, so I'm *hoping* for a "strong finish" to the year! I'd like to have a "good" charter experience (my first was a disaster!), and I'd like to catch a shark(doesn't have to be a big one....just a little bonnet head would do!.....and I'd like to "gather up" a few more "fishin' buddies"!
