A few years ago, Dave (jurelometer) gave me his personal Penn 716 reel.
I have used it numerous times —- particularly the back country lakes on hiking trips.
While, the silver & white handle, crank knob, spool, and drag knob are original —- and look very good on these little ultralight powerhouse reels ——- this gold and black combo looks very sharp also.
Best, Fred
they are a thing of beauty, close to the cardinal 3. harryk
The black and gold does look better . I have a 710 that i will try it out .
I'm not fond of the green & gold combo. Probably because I'm used to green & silver. Maybe I'd like it better if the A/R lever, bail & arms were gold, too.

I understand since you are a purist collector and user, Tommy...
And I appreciate and respect that.
However, since you don't like these changes —- you will probably hate the next colors coming down the pike. 😄😄😄😄😄
Got a lot of Mitchells, DQ's, Penn's, and Cardinals that need a new life.
The Powder-Coating station is getting near ready to fire up.
Best, Fred
You have me figured out. ;D I see a lot of that different color garbage >:D on daBay and gag :P every time I see it. :-\
Fred,
When you get the PC shop setup I might have a 300 I would like to see in chrome or gold. I had a local guy do one supposedly Gold according to the sample. As you remember it turned out bronze or "Root beer" color as you called it. He only charged me $20, but I had to buy metric taps just to clean the threads missed plugging, just to reassemble the reel. I check goodwill every so often for donor reels missing paint, good candidates for PC,I wouldn't want to strip a nice vintage reel with a great paint job otherwise.
Fred, one of my go to reels is a Penn 713 greenie with the gold treatment (Aussie green and gold :D)!
I haven't been on AT for a while due to work and kids ruling my life, however I recently got a little 716 with a bit of surface corrosion. I looked at making it a green and gold however Mystic have stopped shipping internationally unfortunately. Going to clean it up and polish back the spool, should be able to make it work!
Cheers,
Andrew
Fred that's a nice one.
A few years ago I sold an unused 716 in the box with all paperwork, manual, grease, and spare parts for $267.00 online.
I had every one made NIB reels.
