Title: 9/0 Hot rodding
Post by: Shark Hunter on August 25, 2014, 05:19:45 AM
I had a member here that wanted me to Hot Rod his 9/0. It was a very funny coincidence that The improved Black Pearl pinions arrived today after 8 months. Some people show up at the exact right time.
Well, Mike, you are going to make me earn my money on this one. Wheel bearing grease, Damn!
Stinky and makes it harder to complete my task here. Asbestos drag 3 stack.

I bet this reel didn't pull 10 lbs of drag.
I'm not messing around here. I wiped off all the grease I could and soaked the parts in some coleman fuel. Excellent cleaner for this type of situation.

Plate cut for the double dogs, Drags cut for Black Pearl's Hex gear, Handle polished, stainless parts all prepped.

Here you go Mike. 50lb drag capable 9/0 Brother! Stainless Sleeve, yoke, double stainless dogs and springs, Keta Krank, Alan's Kokelar grip and the infamous Dom and Tom Silver Frame! Ready for Battle!

Nice work Daron!
That reel looks like a beast.
Were you able to upgrade to a SS yoke as well?

Yes Sir! Dawn's ss yoke and Delrin on the top and bottom! Mike was serious about this build, and so was I! The stainless yoke is mandatory in this application. So were the .140 drags which are unobtanium!
Enjoy Mike! ;)

Schweeet work Daron!  ;)
I just received a box of reels to repair and service, among them are two 9/0's ... the one with aluminum spool will get traded to me  ;)
....So, soon to commence DomTom Special Megatank#3 for my buddy here.... it'll sport Adam's (3Sevens) 9/0 arm.

Did you cut those delrin washers yourself?
Could you spare a few more?  :D

Alan Chui had them redone in 416 stainless. The 316 failed in one of Sal's tests.

Yes, Alan is now getting us heat treated 416 stainless pinions...those are very strong.

Good job on that reel Daron ;).

Thanks for the comments Everyone! ;D Sal, I cut those drag washers as tight as I could get them. They had to be pushed in. Mike purchased some of the last Silver frames that were available. I wouldn't fish this reel without it. ;)

Nice!

I have no need for a 9/0, but the last pic you posted makes me want one, or two.

Again, nicely done, and the frame looks great!!!

Agreed!
And most offshore fisherman will always be in need of an 80lb rig.
But it doesn't need to be a $1000 reel with 2 speeds and a bunch of bearings..

I think as far as the 9/0 is concerned,
the whole stainless gear/hardened pinion, double dog, 7+1 drag, 40+lbs, not to mention Hex gears!  :o pushing 50lbs
is only made effectively possible by the addition of a solid 1 piece chassis.

Half frame vs. Full frame becomes personal preference, but the need still exists for somebody to keep producing a
solid frame option to keep this all alive.

Who's on deck for the next run of 9/0 frames?

This one is from Tom Hryniuk himself and was used as the model for the half frames. They are rare. A Few members here have the Silver ones. I missed out on those. It was before I arrived.
It sits on top of my Safe in the Living room to my Wife's Dismay. ;) It needs a dusting I can see.
It has all the goodies in it like yours, except for a stainless bridge from my man Adam. ;D

John,
I have learned from past experience, you have to strike when the iron is Hot brother. You may not get another chance.

I think we are above snazzy Adam. It is the Pièce de résistance! :o Thank You Paisan! ;)
I like the Patina of this reel. With some Bling! 8)
Lots of people here made this reel happen. Tom Hyrinuk, Dominick, Alan Chui, Adam, Dawn, Lee, Bryan, El Jefe and of Course Sal! Many thanks to all of you! I couldn't have done it by myself.

Alas, considering the difficulties Mr. Shark encountered selling off the final few frames of the original batch, I imagine another run is out of the question... unless there are a hundred pre-paid orders up front, or something like that.

Still, if it ever happens, I'll certainly buy one, even though I've already got two.   :)

You are right, Aiala --

Get a commitment for at least 50, or 100 -- from folks on this Board.

Get a 50% deposit up front.

We can realize that there are not a lot of people worldwide, who do what we do with reels.  And the old adage "If you build it, they will come" -- is not really a good business model when producing an expensive and specialized product like a 9/0 frame.

And, some may not agree with me -- but we need to make these a little more expensive, so that the makers can realize a little profit.

Anytime folks see and use these frames -- there will be a demand for many more.

Fred

The 9/0 frame venture was not about profit. It was about bringing something special to the members here. That's why I took the ball from Dominick and ran with it. I wanted his venture to end as it should have. I know he is grateful and I took pride in doing so. ;)

Daron, I had to put my sunglasses on to look at your handle and it still didn't help 8).
As for the frames, I have plenty, but as you already know, I'm there if you need me to get in on it to help et it going ;)

Daron -- you did a great job of completing the 9/0 sales!

I was just offering my opinion that it isn't right for anyone to offer these to our group -- and then have a tough time moving them all -- unless they are making a couple of bucks on each one.

These are a great value, and make a very tough reel combination when set up properly.

We appreciate all you did to move these.

How many were sold to members, and how many did you sell on ebay?

Looking forward to another run!

Best,

Fred
