Title: Okuma Andros vs Makaira
Post by: H3rm4nt0 on July 08, 2012, 03:43:07 PM
Hi All,
I'm looking for small OH reel for jigging and bottom fishing. I found okuma Andros and Makaira meets the requirement. but I have queries:
What makes Andros 5II lighter compare to Mak 8II by 9oz? Is it the material?
Will it affects Andros performance?

Ty

The Andros frame, spool, etc. are liter than the Makaira 8 or 10. It also does not have a thrust bearing. They are all great reels.
It depends on what your usage is. The Andros will fish up to 40lb. test, in a pinch 50, and has a cast control. The Makaira's will fish up to 100 lb. test, most fish 40-60 lb. on them. They also have more line capacity.
So:
Andros = better casting, liter weight, higher gear ratio.
makaira = heavier usage, lower gear ratio.

    Hope this helps.

Ty for reply.
Understand now. Both are excellent reel so decision will be depending on my target. I think I know which one to get already.

remember that the andros has 15 pounds of drag at strike before losing freespool and the makaira 8 has 27 pounds of drag at strike before losing freespool.  they are much different reels.
