Title: Yukon 46" workbench
Post by: Alto Mare on April 19, 2019, 05:02:25 PM
I was in need of an additional workbench, I was going to make one, but from the price and quality, I decided to go with this one
(https://i.imgur.com/N7XgtrM.jpg)
I was impressed on how well built it is and also on how well it was packed.
It is quite heavy, so if anyone is looking for one of the same, you will definitely need a truck.
Also, make sure to bring someone with you and don't do as I did ::).
The workbench is 46" wide x 18" deep with lots of storage space. The top is hardwood, also a nice touch.
The top drawer comes fully out and has a capacity of 200lbs., the complete unit has 1200lb capacity.
Casters are of a good quality , very easy to maneuver.

I have seen these on line over $400.00, Harbor Freight usually sells them for $259.
You could get one today, tomorrow, or Sunday for $219 with a super coupon.

So, if anyone is searching for one, I recommend this workbench... you get a lot for the money.

By the way, I have nothing to do with Harbor Freight, I usually don't like their products, but some of the stuff they sell is worth it for me to pay a visit every once in a while.

That is an excellent choice, Sal!

Just an idea —

If you measured the (6) inside shelves — and went to a place like Dollar General, etc.. — you could get plastic tubs that would just slide right in.

I find these really handy when doing a project — just pull out the tub you need, set it on the bench, get what you need — when your project is done — just put everything back away.

Best,

Fred

great bench.  that would make a nice spooling station.  looks like a trip to harbor freight is in the near future for me.

It really is a nice piece.

Thank you Fred!

Sal: If the lathe you purchased will fit, then you have a great cabinet for that all your tool will be right on hand and you can bolt the lathe down to the top for a more solid lathe.

Just a suggestion....................Joe

Thanks guys! Joe, that is the reason I got it.
I took it in the basement on my own, by sliding it on a piece of cardboard.
The  425 lb lathe is now ready to go, but will wait until Monday for my helper.
It is safely in my back room, so there is no hurry.

Ok, I decided to mount the lathe and it really gave me a hard time. there was no place to attach a harness, so me and my helper had to lift it by hand. It is a perfect fit.
Even though the cabinet is strong, it will still need wood blocking, I don't like the way it is moving at the moment.
After cleaning everything and adding good quality grease and oil, I decided to take it for a quick spin.
The very first machining was done to fix Precision Matthew's mistake, the head on the screws that hold the back plate on the chuck were too tall, this was keeping  the chuck from sitting flush.

before
(https://i.imgur.com/yH0RnoN.jpg)
and after
(https://i.imgur.com/xm92OL8.jpg)
much better now
(https://i.imgur.com/rVvgAoU.jpg)
I think this lathe will do me just fine, I can already tell.
I'm new to these, so I was a little disappointed when I realized the cross power feed doesn't work at the same time with the  longitudinal power feed. T
This won't be a problem though, with a little practice I should be able to make some nice tapers in the future.

Nice bench Sal, but we have all been anxious to see that lathe when it arrived.  That's a serious piece of machinery.  The sky's the limit now.

I knew you were a rugged guy, but if you and a helper hoisted 425 pounds........

Sal, you can cut short tapers with the compound slide set to whatever angle you need.     Rudy

Sal: I was writing to you to say something about the lathe when my computer went down :( $600.00 later I'm up again :o Don't ask!

But like Rudy said you can set your compound to make tapers, just dived by 2 for the taper you want. You can also in the future get a taper attachment for longer tapers.

Thanks guys!
Steve, I removed as much as I could before taking it in the basement, I believe about 125 lbs, it was still heavy though.

By the way, I couldn't afford this lathe, but monthly payments makes it possible.

Rudy, I noticed the tailstock  has adjustments for tapers, I'm sure I will eventually get the hang of it.

Just turned a piece of acetate, just to see and I'm not crazy about the mess it makes. I will be turning that stuff with the wood lathe.

Sal, I wouldn't mess with offsetting the tail stock. They can sometimes be a real pain & time consuming resetting back to exact 0. Check with a scale to see how much travel you have with the compound slide from all the way back to all the way forward. It's not usually in the position as shown in your photo, it is usually kept offset to clear the tailstock. It's usually set straight for shipping purposes.

Thank you Rudy.
I do tilt the top slider when cutting, depending on the angle of the cutter I'll keep it square when face cut if it works best.
I read recommendations, but I'll also try different ways for myself just to see.

I just got done fixing it, I had all the gears off.
The power feed stopped working, I read to lower the speed before shifting into forward, or reverse.
maybe I got that wrong, I will read some more.
The keyed insert snapped, of course it took me 3 hours to find it, this is all new to me.
But it was a good experience.
It is nice to be able to maintain the tool if needed, this one is pretty manageable, I think it will do just fine.

It will be used for personal pleasure, I will not be building a reel, or anything like that🙂
Thanks Chris!

Sal; Like the man said. "Never say never". You will be surprised at how fast you catch on to the lathe and what you can do.

If you want to learn there is plenty of literature out there on the operation of lathes.

After some time, I can finally move around my workshop...lot's of room now.
Found the best spot for my lathe and it really gets out of the way. I did not realize how big it was when I purchased it on line, it was taking up lots of space.
It's all good now.
I was also able to level it with zero movement, something not easy to do with a free stand unit. It's wedged in there :).

Other areas also got organized, I feel much better now.

I know it won't last long, but will try to keep at it as I move along.

Best,

Sal

That looks beautiful, Sal!

Very well planned out and functional.  It is good to work with a system awhile before setting more permanent pieces in place -- benches, most used tools, lesser used but necessary tools, parts, etc.

Then there is a staging area -- sort of like an "on-deck" circle in baseball, before a reel goes to the main work area just like a player heading up to bat.

Then a dedicated cleaning area so that the main benches do not get cruddy and messy with cleaners and such.

Then a main work area with a place to put back every tool needed -- ready for next time -- without getting out of your chair or off the stool.

Bagging and shipping area --

Then you are ready for the next reel in line.

My best friends in the shops are called Mr. Vertical, Mr. Label, Mr. White Pegboard, and Mr. Taco Bell trays.

Then, plenty of wastebaskets, paper towels, broom, shop brush, dust pan.

For me, if I have not used a tool for the last 12 months of steady work -- it goes into the outside shop so as not to take up room in the main shop.  Clutter is another word for confusion and time wasted.

As a professional's professional, Sal -- you already know the value of organization in your work.

Sort of like a doctor -- last thing you want to hear when on the table -- "now where is that number 2 laser thingy? -- just saw it around here last week".

You've got this, Sal -- and your shop looks great!  Efficient work flow, good tools, parts labeled and put away, clean, useful, and professional.

And, you are right -- the shop is never done -- it always keeps improving and evolving -- just like each of us.

Your shop looks like a pleasure to be in.

Best,

Fred

Looking good Sal, the lathe work area has plenty of light, there's heaps of storage space in the library card cabinets, drill press, belt sander, press, .............. and two chairs! - I'm on my way.

Thank you guys, I now enjoy walking in. I was surprised to see how much room I have, my wife might not like it... more sq ft than her loundry room.
Reminds me of war of the roses 🙂... just watched that movie the other day😁

Good looking hobby room there Sal.  :) You deserve it and you are getting it set up the way you need or can within your restrictions.
as you may have already don it?,  maybe a rim or toekick around the lathe would make it easier to clean or find things.  Your organization and  kindness are an inspiration to me.   Its a reminder and your a good one.   Enjoy your time using your hands and tools,  its good for the mind.
Best of health,  enjoy your indoor time, and have a great new year.

Yes I love it, I can find what I need all the times and there is lots of floor space.
I do put everything back daily, I believe it's the only way to keep it under control.

On some of my jobs when I called for inspection, the indosctor walked in and went right back out.
I asked if there was a problem, he said he saw the way i layout my tools and material, he didn't heed to see anything else 🙂

Wayno, I did see that movie, another good one.
Have a great evening my friends.

Salvatore - you just cost me lotsa £s ;D
I was looking to improve my hobby room when I saw your new cabinet/bench - Ooo thought I that would work for me. Off to my favourite engineering firm and this is what I found:

6ft long stainless steel, 15 drawers (from shallow to deep), solid hardwood top and the whole thing can be moved (if necessary). Even my wife thinks its looks cool (unexpected bonus ;D).
All I've got do is find a home for everything else :D

Chris, that looks very nice. Wow 6' wide and stainless with a hardwood top, doesn't get any better than that.
It just makes it so much easier to keep thing organized.
Took me a few years to make my helper understand.
I made him put everything back in it's box every night before leaving the job site.
He always argued : what for?  tomorrow I will need to take everything out again.
After struggling to find what I asked for a few times, he now agrees that it is the only way to go.

10-15 minutes is a small price to pay to have the shop spotless and organized.

Very nice Chis!👍
