Title: Question.?

In the lick of time, if you're food doesn't come from a store.   Is it really good for you?

Here,s another white king taken on the next to last day of our regulated season close to home.   The day was perfect, flat calm, morning low tide.  My rod was screeming and I could not beleive my eyes.   Fiss Hon. ;)
https://youtu.be/JoL_jBo-OhA
The videio doesent get going this time until the fish is under control as we have lost two fish earlier the week before.
The plug is a hi teck version I have been playing with with an e-chip attatched to the side.   The results are here butt you have to decide did the chip prompt a strike oar knot. ???

Thanks for sharing your tip earlier also about how to tell the red, white colors of meat from the outside.  I did remember to look at the backside of the fishes collar, I guessed it to be a pale color, later when cleaned and iced it was confirmed as a white king salmon.    It was fun for sure and wish you all could have gone along.   Thanks for watching.    Now it's bbq time. 👌

Just what I needed to fire me up before our salmon season opens their next Saturday!  I'm just about ready to go!  Few small details, test and confirm my downrigger operations are fully functional.  Get the rest of my gear on-board.  I'm pumped!

Thanks for the grunting reminder,   If I could only remember,  make it for the video?  It's what I was after,  like a good fisherman,  just one more.?... it's always panda monium,  you can sit there for days and wait, and think 🤔 of home, and how you are wasting your.  Then magic happens.   Remember when you got married? I can't go to the details on much of that,  I'm,getting too old.💏🕶💥💥💥🤞💥

Some times when we go fishing, things get out of control.  But if we sit on the dock and wait, heaven can pass you by.  It's a balance of staying married and going to hell in a handbasket.  Now I got the time to mow the lawn, and smile 😊,  I cannot wait for summer.   🎣💏💥🤗

Thanks Gary, nice fish alright, that woddy sure removed the lure from his mouth, Gary I was watching the video, was a bit hard to see, but it looked like you have a good finger grip on your rod above the reel, if that is so, what a great idea, could you show a photo of it, there is possibly plenty of rod like it but the first that I have seen, cheers Don.
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: gstours on April 02, 2019, 02:51:51 PM
Mr. Donnyboat, thanks for sharing your thoughts and question.  Yes most of my rods are modified to be specific for a certain use.  The rod in this clip is a Okuma Celilo x heavy, shorten the tip by 6 inches.
The foregrip is about 14 inches and hypalon.  The finger grip grooves are put in to improve your grip on a damp day, and with scent oil on the grip.  It is easy to do, and is comfortable indexing you're fingers without having to grip and squeeze the fore end for my use.
The rod has a slickbutt as well as this aids in getting it out of the rod holder when the fish is running.
I can show you all more soon, as I take more spacific pictures if you're interested.🚣‍♀️

Here's a reply to the finger grooves mr Donny asked about.  The rod he talked about is still on the boat, butt here's the basic idea done to some rods in my hobby room.
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: gstours on April 02, 2019, 09:28:09 PM
The grip shown is hypalon and it can be sanded into this shape quite easily using an arbor drum sander, as shown is a couple ho made ones, using scrap grinding belt pieces.
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: gstours on April 02, 2019, 09:35:19 PM
Okuma and penn make some rods with a flat spot on the top of the grip, others make a triangle type,  my experience is this is easy enough to do and makes the rod more comfortable when in hard use.👌
Using a variable speed drill 90 degrees to the rod that is held in a benchvise is quite simple and go slow at first,  use coarse paper to rough it into shape then smooth it by hand at the last.     🚣‍♀️🤔🎣

Trying out new things to see what works and what you like and don't like is a huge part of the game.  I love to see what's going on behind the scenes before the boats go out.

Hypalon is no longer sold in the USA, I'm not sure about the rest of the world. The stuff that's supposed to replace it is called EPDM. I don't think I've worked with it yet, but it's supposed to be pretty comparable. When I get some to play with, I'll post about it.

Post by: gstours on April 05, 2019, 02:31:50 PM
Hypalon may be a trade name?  Its not being made in the USA any longer because of enviromental issues i was told.  Butt I did purchase some recently from Florida Mudhole Folks.  Its a good fore grip material,  Butt cork is more attractive, and less durable especially for rod holders and strangers. ;)

Salmon season opens tomorrow and the forecast is for 6-8' swell at 12 seconds with 4-5' wind waves.
Think I will sit out the opener and hope for better days soon and while I wait I went and visited our friend Jon V. Who finished up my Lamiglass XCC 111, and it's a beauty, the color scheme is a beautiful root beer brown and gold with fades all over.  His wraps are unique and beautifully executed.  I cannot wait to feel the pull of a nice King Salmon in this one.

Thanks for the great question.  I used to think it was the diet of the fish, butt now biological data says it's genetic behavior.  Apparently even separate spawning of a white buck and hen will not necessarily produce white meated offspring.  Even though these fish are rare in some places it's not uncommon to find a few in other geographical areas.   I was lucky to find a couple to show you.
So what are they good for?🤔

Went out early forecast predicted high surf, forecast was wrong. It was beautiful on the water, stomach was still giving me fits, but I took my prednisone and ate a fistful of antacids and all was well.  Fishing by 0700, first fish in the boat by 0800, second fish came about an hour later and third fish about an hour after that.  My two guests boated the first two fish and I had the honours of boating the third, damnit Jim! I'm a doctor not a lawyer and the third fish was found not guilty and fled the scene post haste.  Nada after that in spite of watching every single boat within sight was honking up and nets were flying, pictures were few and far between because it was Wild West dangerous out there,  hundreds of boats everywhere all vying for the same piece of water.  It was first day of the new season for me and boating two fish and losing only around $100.00 worth of gear was a good day, yesterday a fisherman lost his brand new pickem up truck at the Monterey Launch.  Today one guy lost a $700.00 rod and reel, a number of other guys lost cannonballs and terminal gear, one guy lost both his canon balls and terminal gear, my biggest fail, I did not make a bait stop and went with only artificial that I tied, three hookups though so I call that a win?  Even if the fish switched to only biting bait after noon.  Next time I will have bait.  I lost one canon ball and all terminal gear to a submerged crab pot, while I was repairing a frayed cable on the other side downrigger.  Can't be everywhere watching everything all at once.  So I bring the downriggers home and refit them. Picture to follow after I get it transferred from my phone.  It was a long day up at 0330 out the door by 0415, at the boat by 0515, out the harbour at 0600 a short run and fishing by 0640.
Many more days of this to follow, despite numerous offers to share I insisted my buddies each take a fish home.  That was wrong, I should have accepted the offer to share in the bounty of the clan.  My wife would have been happier with me this evening!

Right out of moss and ran 7 miles out over the south canyon Edge 300' water give or take 100'.
Fished for 2 hrs fought one fish, discovered the main school was only 5 miles out over the canyon and I ran over them going out, came back in and had a good time, would have caught more fish with bait in the afternoon, but didn't bring any.

We noticed a small fray in one of my cables, decided to repair it on the water, while fixing this fray, we snagged a submerged crab pot on the other downrigger and broke the cable off losing, 12lb ball, snubber, chamberlain release, Dubro shock and my favorite magna troll flasher.  So I brought them both home, on the workbench, checking full length of the cables for kinks or frays.  Cleaning Drag plates and washer, cleaning and regressing everything and installing new cable retrievers, new shock spring, release, snubber and weights.  It never ends. But it's fun and keeps me off the streets at night.

I have on my old set of canons run braid, I liked it very much and if it were not for the change canon made in their new downriggers I would still be running spectra.  It doesn't fray or kink ever.  But it also doesn't not work with Canons auto stop feature and the new DRs retrieve rate is 250' minute, that 12 lb ball is screaming it's way back to the top.  Without auto stop the retrieve all comes to an end at the tip of the DR pole, that inevitably results in the total loss of everything from the first rigging to the terminal rigging and everything in between.  The only thing to be done is stand with your finger on the trigger and do not take your eyes off the ball.
I wish I could slow the downrigger retrieval rate, canon says no way, but I gotta think there is a way?
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: Maxed Out on April 12, 2019, 09:02:47 PM
I have run spectra on my high speed Scotty's for several years of heavy use and always 15# balls. If I get on a submerged pot I can pull the pot with the spectra, and it doesn't fray or rot like cable and it splices very easy and less blowback.

Couple years ago the kings were down 350-500' and everything must be dialed in when downrigger fishing at that depth. I would never attempt to fish cable at that depth, but no problem with spectra
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: Hardy Boy on April 12, 2019, 09:27:42 PM
I use cable, but only the good stainless braided wire not the twisted crap. Braid is better for deep fishing for sure, but since where I fish we rarely go deeper than 100 feet (mostly 55 to 65 feet)........ I go old school and stay with the wire. I like the "singing" wire while trolling away. It fishes well on my boat, but if you suspect electrical leaks then for sure go with braid.

Cheers:

Todd
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: David Hall on April 12, 2019, 10:29:50 PM
Scotty's will still give you auto stop with braid using their little plastic stops.  Canons lose the function entirely when spooled with braid.  So it's stainless braid for now and I'm going to research to find a way to slow the mother speed without burning it up.
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: Hardy Boy on April 13, 2019, 01:42:53 AM
I use a swivel not the stoppers and a length of heavy mono to the ball. The stoppers slide and can be a pain. The swivel does not slide and stop every time.

Cheers:

Todd
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: David Hall on April 13, 2019, 02:48:35 AM
With my canons I rig a dubro shock kit on top then a swivel, then my release then a rubber snubber above the weight.
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: gstours on April 21, 2019, 04:20:32 PM
I was told that the Scotty braid marketed is even larger diameter than the wire.  Personally I like the wire, it sings and makes you cuss at the same time.   You can easily Lind a bead and crimps up the wire where you want a 🛑 or an attachment point for a release clip.    Scotty has information in there site about measuring wire line voltage.  Just go.   The fish can't wait 😊.
Title: Re: Question.?
Post by: David Hall on April 21, 2019, 07:59:23 PM
I rig this at the terminal end of my cable, then attach my chamberlain release, then a scotty snubber then my cannonball.  if autostop fails and occasionally it does and the rigging slams into the end of the downrigger, this little device gives it a bit of cushioning.

I have been running 135lb Stainless Steel cable w/a 12lb ball, but 200lb dacron seems to work great on the planers.  I am actually thinking of switching to Dacron and 32 oz planer boards instead of lead to try to get deeper at higher speeds.  I just cut a short section of fuel line and rig it as a stopper on top of the swivel.

Stopper for an electric down rigger?  Swivel then tube?  At the ball?  What type of shock cord?  I generally use a piece of halibut gannian with a couple of knots in it to aid in gripping the cord, and sometimes snap in a release there, or add an extra bare flasher.   Just wondering.     Thanks. :)

I don't use electrics any more, so the rubber lone is just insurance against overenthusiastic mates.  It probablh doesn't work as well as your setup on the autosrop function, but it is simple.

I like Gary's idea of spicing in a short section of cord above the weight to give you something to grab easily when swinging the ball back aboard.

I fished cable for 20+ years and it needed replacing once a year. It would kink and Frey and rust and decay. I was stubborn to change, but finally did about 15 years ago and never looked back... the spectra lasts 6-8 years of heavy use with 15# balls. I get my 200# spectra at local shop. $99 for a 600yd spool. In comparison, the cable is much more expensive and has much shorter lifespan

Cannon downriggers need cable to function properly. Some people prefer that. Maybe someday they will enter the modern era and offer spectra friendly options too
