Title: Bushkill Creek / Bushkill, PA
Post by: ChileRelleno on May 26, 2017, 09:30:34 PM
We left Bama Wednesday morning, over nighted in Abingdon, VA and the next day stopped in Harrisburg, PA at Bass Pro Shops to pick up a few things before heading to our final destination here  in Bushkill, PA on Bushkill Creek.
Staying at my wife's sister's cabin which is right on the creek, and it offers some good Trout fishing, along with Bass, Bream and others.
Really nice place and our hostess is first rate.
Have some of my family (older Sister and family) who live in Bethlehem are coming up for a Memorial Day BBQ.
Going to visit, play and fish and BBQ the traditional burgers-n-dogs.

Our hostess Auntie Angela and her beautiful cabin home.

First Day of Fishing
First day of fishing for Nate and I commenced early with nothing to show.
But the afternoon has proven mildly productive.
I'm using Ultra Light and Light spinning gear, Nate is Flyfishing and Light spinning gear.
I'm brand new to trout, someone verify species for me, Rainbow and Brook?

I caught this 12.5" Bow(?) on a Mepps Comet Minnow drifting along a riffle, just barely keeping the lure facing down stream and picking up the slack.
First fish of the trip!

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s190/ChileRelleno/IMG_20170526_132243506_zpsiep7u8vs.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/ChileRelleno/media/IMG_20170526_132243506_zpsiep7u8vs.jpg.html)

The Nate scores on a Caddis Fly, 10" Brook(?), he saw the fish rising to feed and put the fly in it's face and it ate.
This boy is a freaking natural born fisherman, and rapidly becoming adept at fly casting.

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s190/ChileRelleno/IMG_20170526_164813500_zpsjuqgixv6.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/ChileRelleno/media/IMG_20170526_164813500_zpsjuqgixv6.jpg.html)

This is the stream at the front of the cabin, we're fishing along about a 3/4 mile in either direction on a private road.
Very little traffic from other fishermen as it is walk-in only allowed and must have property owner permission.
We've carte blanche permission anywhere on this side of the creek road.

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s190/ChileRelleno/IMG_20170526_162320064_zpsqjvl3g2c.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/ChileRelleno/media/IMG_20170526_162320064_zpsqjvl3g2c.jpg.html)

Most of the people out here either fly fish or use live bait.
Lots of minnows, small earthworms, wax worms and hellagrammites on #6 and smaller hooks with BB sized split shot.
I may change my methods

Been wearing out the panfish this evening, some nice Red Breasted Sunfish.
I also caught another trout (species?), 10", on a red spotted/yellow Panther Martin spinner.

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s190/ChileRelleno/IMG_20170526_184216312_zpshiqimdhl.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/ChileRelleno/media/IMG_20170526_184216312_zpshiqimdhl.jpg.html)

Nate caught a really nice Red Breasted Sunfish, 9"+.
Didn't get a pic of that one, but it'll be breakfast.

Deer all over, had a small herd of 6 does on the road this morning.  Saw more cross the creek.
Bears visit regularly, so we always have SiL's dog with us to bark/chase and otherwise deter bears, plus a lil'something in my pants.  :o
And rabbits... Everywhere!

Chile, regular Brook trout(not some odd strain) should have a white margin on the anterior portion of the bottom fins, 'cause they're in the Char family. The ones you got with the small spots look like Rainbows, the ones with large spots---? Springtime trout fishin for me used to mean slow retrieves and possibly bait 'cause of the low water temps.

Beautiful lookin cabin and land. Yer givin me a hankerin fer a mountains fishin trip!

What a great way to spend the holiday.  Brings back memories of family spending the holiday with my grandparents on the feather river.  Fantastic fishing all year and epic at times.

I'm going to be out that way this coming September, flying in to Charleston, driving to South Boston, then to Pickens, then back to Charleston 10 days in all.  Still putting together my itinerary.

Especially with your culinary skills. :)

Enjoy Pennsylvania along with your family John, you're at a very nice area.
I hunted Monoe County for the past 35 years, I'm about 3 1/2 hours from there.
I just gave up recently.
Have fun!

OH!
Forgot to mention this...

Our Hostess is lonely and looking for a husband.
She only asks that he is under 55 yrs, has all his teeth, has his head on straight and easy going.
And that he is professional in his career field and financially sound on his own.
Conservative views, and must like dogs.

She is mid 40s, divorced, no kids, financially well off individual who has a very good job working for the Mars Corp.
Mars, ya know M&Ms and other candies.
Middle of the road conservative views, very laid back and fun person with an awesome personality.
Built for comfort on cold winter nights.
Has a dog.

I'm only half joking.

Nate scored a 16.5" Golden Rainbow.
Some type of dry fly was used, not sure.

Wayne, they're a Rainbow hybrid, specially bred.
PA stocks them quite regularly, especially on for Opening Day of trout season.
They stocked over 8500 last year.

No, not smoking any, fresh on the grill and cast iron here at the cabin.

Day Three

A lot of time out of the water today, running errands and shopping with the women.
So not much to show for fishing.

I caught a few dink trout, legal but too small for me to bother with cleaning.
I lost a BIG Brownie, might've been a new state record!  ::)
Honestly he was at least as big as Nate's Golden... Dagblast'it!

Also caught a nice 19" Smallmouth bass and another Smallmouth which is so far the tiniest fish of the trip.
The big Smallie had to be released as the season is closed on all Bass till June 16th, so no pic.
The dink Smallmouth was all of 2" and hit the same lure as the 19"er.

Nate put another Brown in the fridge, it was a solid 12"
He also caught a nice bass that looked to be a Spotted, but again strict C&R so no pic.

I really need to get a waterproof/floating GoPro so I can take pics anywhere.
Sucks not being able to get scenery and action shots.
It is really beautiful up here.

One the wife took from the bank.

You are the Master of your domain. ;)
With all the pictures, I have never seen one of your wife, Ever.
Is this a rule?
I will meet her some day.
Face to face if need be.
I need to meet the woman that puts up with you. ;)

LMAO...  :D
Yeah, she avoids cameras if she can.
Remember that song by 'The Coasters'

QuoteIf you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Well... I married a pretty one, and now I'm singing that Guns-n-Roses,

QuoteI used to love her, but I had to kill her
I had to put her, six feet under, and I can still hear her complain

Before marriage, three kids and 20+ years.

Day Four

Nate scores two nice trout.
He also missed one trout and landed a small Sunfish.

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s190/ChileRelleno/IMG_20170529_122215536_zpscluxayk5.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/ChileRelleno/media/IMG_20170529_122215536_zpscluxayk5.jpg.html)

And I walked away with my head hanging in shame.
I had two decent trout hooked and lost at the net.  :(
A Smallie (C&R) and a Sunfish saved me from being skunked.

Day Five

Today was a tough and frustrating day of fishing.
I lost so many freaking lures and lost a couple of nice trout.
One would've been a stud, but he is sporting a shiny new $5. piercing for the ladies.
Finally late in the day I was able to seal the deal on a nice 12" Brownie.
I also got another decent 13" Smallie (C&R) and another Sunfish.

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s190/ChileRelleno/IMG_20170530_192322460_zpsb1lbaaxx.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/ChileRelleno/media/IMG_20170530_192322460_zpsb1lbaaxx.jpg.html)

Today Nate almost got skunked.
He had a decent trout on the line, but it threw the lure.
I saw it clearly and it had to be 12"-14" fish.
Nate was pissed.
But his day was saved by a 4" Smallie  :D

Went into Milford, PA to shop.
I hit up 'Fretta's Italian Food Specialties', they make a ton of homemade sausage, ham and cheese items... Simply incredible as I taste tested my way through their charcuterie selections.
Then I broke out the Visa and bought enough meats, cheeses and stuffed olives to maybe last me till Friday if I don't pig out twice a day or more.

Double up on the cholesterol medicine!

we've still have three short days to go, and I'm loving every minute of them.

Auntie Angela is having a blast, she loves having her family visit and it doesn't happen often enough.
She gets so excited when she has visitors coming, like a kid waiting for Santa.

Besides her neighbors and work, she is basically alone with her dog. I'm not kidding about looking for a husband, she is lonely.

Ain't that the truth... Best vacation I've had in a decade.

And to think I've passed coming up here last two years in a row.
But they were coming up late summer.
I told Angela we need to come up earlier in May.

Day Five

Today was a tough and frustrating day of fishing...
I lost so many freaking lures...  but he is sporting a shiny new $5 earring..

Chile,

I feel your Pain Buddy Boy!!!!

I've been fishing high Sierra small streams for trout since age 5.

And I too have knelt at the Altar of Small Stream fishing, and we all have made the same offering, of $5 trout lures to the stream Gods.

I offer this short Prayer to you.

"The Lord Giveth and the Lord Taketh Away"

Let me offer to you what Sal offered to me...  Lures!!!

This last weekend, I was prepping for the Lake Edison Trip with Fred & JT,

and reviewed my trout lure collection,

Wayne,
wish I could pick your brain for a day with you on this creek fishing alongside me.
The 'How To" and 'How Not To' of lure fishing a small, fast and super rocky stream.
Example, "How do I fish these eddies?", they're all so shallow, toss a lure and instantly snagged.
Or, "How do I best present a lure behind that big rock where I saw that trout rise a minute ago?"

I've been fishing two Penn Spinfisher 4300SS, both with 4# mono.
One is on a Ultra Light rod and the other a Light.
The bail came apart on one those this afternoon while Nate was fishing it, thankfully he caught it and I didn't lose any parts.
I put it back together, and both continue to work fine.
Nate's old cheapie Daiwa reel  that has survived years of abuse by a young boy out bass/bream fishing, finally snapped it's bail spring.
It's history, gonna buy him a Penn Battle II 2000 for Light work.

I pretty much have half of the models of lures you have, and then some variety.
Only exception are the Super Dupers, couldn't find them at Bass Pro or Wally world.
I've a tackle box full of brand new backups for almost everything I have, went through the Harrisburg Bass Pro chucking 4-5 of every lure on my list, not to mention Nate's flies.

Very gracious of you, let me try one of those shiny chrome Super-Duper 502's, and I'll see if I can catch a fish on it.

You are still catching John.
I my very early days of stream fishing in Indiana on my Uncle's property.
I chose Rapala's and AC Shiners.
Small floating lures that won't get snagged in the rocks.
Those two and rooster tails were all that was needed to catch anything in that stream.
Mainly Smallmouths, Largemouths and Bluegill.
A 14" Smallie was quite the prize back then.
I have fished the Mountain streams of Colorado with the same lures and caught some very nice brook trout.
They all were Delicious.

Darron reminded me ofa deadly tactic that's worked for me on "small" water, where the fish 'er spooky and it's shallow. Sneak upstream with a floating minnow imitation( Rapala's expensive, but best)lob it into the fast current in the middle and let it drift way down to the honey-hole. Forward jerks and short drift backs'll drive 'em nuts.

Good choice on the addition of the tail Benni. When the fish had lockjaw we use to put a garden worm on in the same fashion. It was killer!

Flies are deadly on those streams.  If you don't have fly gear you can use a float with a fly so you can cast it.

Day Six

Neither of us landed a trout.
Small Smallies, Sunfish and Fallfish were all we managed.
Only got about four hours of fishing in.

Day Seven

Nate didn't do much fishing today, so nothing for him to show.

Myself on the other hand spent the afternoon in pursuit of fish, and it was quite an aggravating, yet rewarding day.

Rewarding that I landed three trout today, several Smallies and a few Sunfish too.

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s190/ChileRelleno/IMG_20170601_201350218_zpseodivpmq.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/ChileRelleno/media/IMG_20170601_201350218_zpseodivpmq.jpg.html)

Aggravating in that:
I lost several trout at the net.
Ran through tackle/lures like a bacon through a goose.
Found the deepest hole in the creek... And stepped into it up to my chin.
Snapped the tip of my best trout rod off at the second guide while trying to land the last trout of the day...  I sure do hope Bass Pro replaces it.

One more day of fishing before heading home.

I know very well of your determination John.
That is why I always like fishing with you.
Its all out or nothing.
Just try to enjoy yourself.
I remember the last time we fished together,
You jumped in my Kayak and attempted to paddle to Cuba.
You ended up back on the beach with my Shark rig in your hands and collapsed on the sand.
I wish you only the best on your Vacation.
Try to step back and enjoy it with the family.
That is my downfall, I like to sit back and enjoy it too much instead of going at it like I should.
I would love to be on that Stream with you and Nate.
Safe travels my friend,
Daron

Day Eight

And as the sun sets on the last fishing day of our vacation, I count my many Blessings.
Of which for today, I didn't lose a single piece of tackle, but didn't land any fish either.
Two hookups, two losses and several fish short striking and/or aborting their run on the lures.

My family and I had a great time, no accidents or injuries... Still a long 1100+ mile ride home.
Pray for us as we head back South, dang highways and drivers are crazy now-a-days.

Thank you to all who offered tips/tricks and encouragement.

Americans to the max.

Love your posts, except, can't eat all that bacon. Wish I could.

Good question. I thought I's doin the right thing in Alaska, by peein around my tent every night to "mark my territory"? No problems though. In fact we never saw a bear, only giant paw/claw prints in the mud n' sand down by the river every morning. There's a big diffrence between wild grizzlies and wild/accostumed-to-humans black bears. I've heard it said that the bears more used to the presence of a-lota humans are more dangerous.
