They are there as a reminder of the pound line you have on the spool. The little lever under the disc can be moved to the appropriate number.

Cheers,

Terry.

Or, it is a cast control knob to help prevent over-run of the spool when casting...

Since there are knobs on both sides-- center your spool as best you can between the frame plates -- with just the slightest side to side movement possible and still have good freespool.

Then for fine tuning to get the bait out there where you want it -- without a bird-nest -- adjust the knob with the smooth arrow until the operation is perfect for your application and conditions.

Lastly, rotate the ring so that "0" is under the smooth arrow -- now it is set.

Plus you can adjust it higher or lower at any time -- and still go back to your original setting when desired.

It can also be used to know what time to be home -- or how many sandwiches or delicious Hickory Smokie Joe's are left in the lunchbox.

Most fisherman never use this setting because they may not understand it -- and they do not need to...

However, a bait-caster is critical to set up properly with a few tweaks before the first cast -- it makes a good day better instead of harder.  For example -- spool centering, cast control, spool tensioner, clicker on or off, drag set for conditions at strike and set, free spool, etc..

This is true for shore, surf, or boat fishing.  If your arsenal is set up -- you can quickly change rigs if needed with no wasted time fiddling around with adjustments when the fish are biting.

Best,

Fred

Maybe also be to keep a record of the fish you have in your live-well !!

Cheers.
