Post by: CooldadE on March 16, 2021, 03:27:10 AM
I have a Newell S229-5 I picked up a few years ago at West Marine. I had seen it in the store and it had been on the shelf for a long time. I guess not to many Newell fans in my little town. They marked it way down and I grabbed it. I have used it in the SF Bay for Stripers and Halibut loaded with 20# mono. Im looking to  I'm looking to fill it with like 50# braid and a long top of 30# mono then tie on 20,25 or 30# fluorocarbon as needed...then slap it on my Calstar 270H. Can this reel in stock form handle 30# ? I know it has a bronze gear sleeve and a 3 disk drag stack...

Should be ok. I'd change the drag washers if they're the stock ones, they can be jerky. Bryan's ultimate upgrade kit is the ticket or if you want to keep just 3 CF washers penn ht100 washers for a 500 jigmaster are a good fit.
