Some giant Lings in those rocks .
Great idea and thanks Juan !
I'm in depending on dates. Maybe 2. At least I could get one day of fishing in.
Ok, seems like we have a quorum. I think August will be the best time to do it, right on time for the weather to calm down (hopefully) and make it to Point Lopez for some big reds. We can have the whole boat for $2600 with two deckhands. So if we get 15-20 people the price comes down between $200-$150 (18% tip included).
The tentative dates are August 6th, 13th or 27th so far the list goes so far, please let me know which of those dates work so we can set one ASAP.

Juan
Juan!
Thank YOU for doing this a putting this trip together!
Aug 6 or 13 are open for me. If the trip is on one of those two dates, I'll be there.
Wayne
Like Wayne, I can make it on the 6th or 13th but not the 27th.
Looks like the only date I'm comfortable saying I'm available is the 27th and even that if iffy....Pick the date that works best for everyone and i'll try to make it work
As of today, all these dates work. Any decent places to book a room overnight near by?
I'm in for the trip.
Mike McGhee
Any date is good for me. Bill
Vanessa and I will be in if it's on aug 13th
Count me in, Juan, depending on the date. Would be nice if we can get enough people to book a charter.
Neil
Juan, Just for reference, one of the Cedros trips leaves Monday Aug 28th, and I need the 27th as a travel day to San Diego, so I can't make the 27th. And I have to work on the 6th, so the 13th is the only day I can make it. Thanks for setting this up. Rich
I'd love to go if its the later two dates cant do the first date. TommyD
i am just now catching up. juan was by a few days ago. he and i signed up for august 13th on the kahuna.
https://kahuna.fishingreservations.net/resos/
So August 13th it is! Bill
juan sent me a text earlier today. he is going to post the formal announcement.
Aw, too bad. Just saw this and I'd love to go, but I only have August 6th open. I'm leaving for Sitka on the 13th, backpacking on the 27th.
Hi Everyone!
The majority of people seems to be ok with August 13th for our anniversary charter! Instead of collecting money, please go to https://kahuna.fishingreservations.net/resos/ and make a reservation for that date (August 13th). Make sure you do so fast so we can take as many spots available!
Tight lines!
Juan :fish
i already signed up!!! ;D
Thank you for putting the trip together Juan. I'm booked!
Signed up for myself and Vanessa on the 13th!
Oh Man, August is my 4 Day out of San Diego along with work milestones I need to attend.
If it's slides left to July I'd like to be considered.
Thanks,
Steve

Rogan, this was going through my mind to fly up, but I just can't make the date any longer. We are celebrating a my daughter's graduation the day before.

Juan, I'm booked, have my flight reserved, and I have a place to stay (thanks Alan). Really looking forward to this trip and meeting several Ohana I have never met in person.
I just paid for my trip.
Juan,

Just booked my spot. Bill
Hey, guess what?

the 13th falls on my Anniversary, I would think after 50yrs she would be a bit more understanding of my fishing addiction, but apparently Iam wrong. :d

maybe just call if it takes much longer.
I suggest you call them. I just confirmed my reservation by calling and while talking with him he stated they have a new computer reservation system and still working out the bugs. Bill
Ok,awaiting confirmation email but I paid!
See you guys in a month or so!

So SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) was looking for a place to stay while we are in town and found a BnB, actually it's a travel trailer 🤣. Don't blame me, it was her idea 🤫. For 2 nights it can't be that bad. Heck I lived in a 30' for 5 years in Sacramento. After the trip we are going to continue north and visit my mom in Crescent City. I still have to go through the rest of my dads tools and fishing gear. He was into bass fishing for quite a while and if memory serves me well there are 3 Garcia Conlon trout poles. Bill
Seven spots left..
Whats up I paid for my trip and never received a receipt. I have my password but I can't find any proof of my payment.
Check your spam folder, I found mine there
Juan
Hi Juan,
I'm sorry. I cannot make it due to some health issues that we are tying to solve. Looking forward to the posts though.
Hi everybody!
This is a video with the instructions for parking, I will update you on the type of fishing once I speak to the captain. One thing is for sure, we will load on chillipeppers so bring a deep drop setup (300 ft+) and some flies, I will find out about the lingcod situation
https://youtu.be/1z6J4efYMi4?feature=shared
is anyone bringing whole frozen squid?
Quote from: Bill B on August 08, 2023, 03:34:01 AMis anyone bringing whole frozen squid?
They usually have squid strips on the boat to sweeten hooks but not whole squid.
BTW I confirmed with Kahuna, I'll be there on Sunday. >:D
Juan,
Any idea what size weights to bring???
12 oz, 16 oz, or 2 lbs????
Let us know please. TANKS.
Wayne
Based on the forecast SW winds 5 to 10 knots. Wind waves 3 to 4 ft. W swell around 2 ft,
and previous experience with the charter. 12-24 oz weights as we may venture to 450 ft. If you have electric reels bring them in. Recommended jigs, nothing under 8 oz (10 oz best). If you are planning to use whole squid, I recommend bring some of your own, as the boat only has strips. Will confirm the details with the captain this afternoon
Thanks
Juan
24oz lead and 450' 😱. Time to get the 6/0's and 9/0's spooled up 🫣. Anyone have a bulk spool of Dacron 😆. Bill
I used my international 16 II to reel up a pile of fish from 520 feet one afternoon. Not fun but doable.
Take your "try acting pills"
Cheers:
todd

On my way
We are packing up the car and heading north this morning. Bill
picking up rich at the airport at 10:30. the girls had already planned a saturday brunch, so this lucky guy gets to join us. it will be good to have him here, because i haven't had a chance to put together any gear. the first order of business this morning is to start charging the batteries for the electric reels.
wow. there are still four spots open on the kahuna for tomorrow. winds are 5 knots in the morning and 8 knots in the afternoon.
Good luck all and please post up a report with lots of pics.
Wish i could make gents but works has been extremely busy. Tomorrow is supposed to be a day off but I have to come into work to attend a critical stress debrief for a body recovery i was involved with last week.

Only three available now :fish
Jennifer was planning on making Rice Crispy Treats for our fishing day tomorrow UNTIL she I told her PJ was unable to attend,

Oh Man I love double chocolate brownies! Tell her thanks anyway
Just spoke with the captain, 12-16 is of lead, we will be fishing 260 to 450 likely out of Davenport, there a some nice lings at the 200s but the main target will be chillipeppers, one of the tastiest rockfishes in my opinion. See you tomorrow!
Wish I could make but too far for me. Hope you guys kill it
The wife and I are in Watsonville now enjoying the cool air and quiet surroundings. Bill
Just too close to my San Diego trip so $$$ is tight.
Never fished that deep on a charter so I'm interested in the quality of fish you guys catch.
I own no electric reels but I guess if your going 400' down I GET IT!
Hope everyone slays tomorrow (while I'm at work) and can't wait to see the pictures.
It begins!
Hope you folks have a great time getting together on the water.
Wish I could fish but have been off the water this year due to health reasons. Looking forward to reports.
hope you guys kill it. it also looks cold.
Quote from: Rocket Dog on August 13, 2023, 07:54:08 PMhope you guys kill it. it also looks cold.
Yeah, they can send some of that to the Sacramento Area...
Where's the report?
Well one report I can make is while enroute to my moms house in Crescent City our car suffered a catastrophic break down. We will be in C City for a while as Volvo fixes the car. At least it's still under warranty.
Oh yeah, the fishing was excellent. Boat limited out in 6 hours. A variety of fish were caught, starry cod, boccasio, wolf eel, petrole sole, yellow eye (released), ling cod. Water was lake smooth (not the usual Victory at Sea), boat hauled butt, fishermen and women were excellent company, brownies caused a diabetic coma. Can't wait for next year. I never fished the Kahuna before and will definitely fish her again. Bill
Flat calm seas, lots of fish!
Now THAT's a report. Damn Bill I hope the whole car thing works out - I'm sure its a PITA but you're not missing much since it's hot here and judging by the clouds you have monsoon season up the hill. Looks like you have LOTS of tasty fish! Always good fried but love it marinated and kissed by the coals. Awesome that you did not have the typical "Victory at Sea" conditions. - john
Forgot to mention, the skipper Nicky, was exceptionally helpful. He informed me the petrole sole are extremely poisonous and that he would take both of them off my hands for proper disposal 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Butt seriously he is a great captain and runs a tight boat with two great deckies. Bill
He took then off your hands because they are a good eating fish.
Did you get into electric reel depths?
Wolf Eel, never caught one of those.
How big was it and did anyone take pictures of it!
Hint Hint:
Can we plan AT16 in September!
I'd sure love to go and put faces to names!

The head was cut off, thrown overboard, and the deckhand fileted it out for the angler to take home, cook and consume. He said it was similar to Ling Cod. BUTT who knows.

tommy dembski and i used electrics. they worked great. it's too hard on my shoulders otherwise. for me, almost any depth is good enough for electric.
Petrale sole...mmm good.
Alright Kids, here we go...
First of all a BIG THANK YOU to Juan for putting this trip together. It ALWAYS takes ONE GUY, and in this case, Juan IS the ONE GUY!!!! Thank you Sir for all your time and effort, all of us were the beneficiaries of your work effort.

BUTT a HUGE THANK YOU to Gfish (Gregg) for OUT OF THE BLUE, or in this case, Purple, He sends me his reel, with a note saying, "I have TOO many reels and you like Purple, so this reel is now yours!!!!"

"The head was cut off, thrown overboard"
Referring to the Wolf Eel.
El Pescador,
I've never caught one.
Is there something about the head I/we need to be careful about when I do????

lots of teeth!!!!! ;D
CP,
Wolf Eels are an interesting study.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_eel
Behavior
Large wolf eels are capable of inflicting painful bites on humans
As food
The wolf eel has edible, sweet and savory white flesh. In some coastal northwest Native American tribes, the wolf eel was referred to as the sacred "doctorfish".
Now you've been learn'd!!!
Wayne
Good info guys, I like all my fingers and finger tips!
So....
How about AT16 being in September next year!? :d

Has anyone thought about chartering the boat for albacore. That would be fun.
Wow, maybe with those conditions, I could have made it in my condition. Looks like it was a whole lot of fun with a whole lot of fun guys.
