Nice Alan!

What hooks are you changing out to?

Everything I have is old school iron, except for one colt sniper and a megabait (neither used yet), it will be nice to try out some of the newer jigs available.

Thanks.

i went cheap with a box of 4x lazer sharps.  the 4 ounce laser minnows will get the 1/0 trebles and the 3 ounce laser minnows will get the no. 1 trebles.  i just don't want another grouper to straighten out another stock hook!

There is yet another picture clearly showing the boss with a spinner in hand...

I am begining to question is statement
"I hate spinners!"

He meant servicing them, not fishing them.

Did you keep the grouper or C&R?

Yea, the nice fish caught my eye first, then the blue knob on that SPINNER!  Cedros or Saltiga? Or? Must have been a tussle to muscle that hog out of whatever hole or cranny he was wanting to stay in down there. But my oh my...grouper steak sandwiches? Or grouper salad? Yehaaa!

Don't Question the Bosu. He does what he wants. ;)

Just do what he does - Not what he says.

Most I have heard do catch and release, but was asking because I have not heard people speak of Broom Tails for table fare.

How was the meat?

It's a great eating catch according to my friends in Baja.
Believe it's a protected species in California.

A lot of the boats have an anglers code of conduct and won't let you keep a BSB. They can be legally brought back to CA from Mexico with proper documentation. However, Broomtail Grouper are illegal to posses in CA even if caught in Mexico! Oops...

Is a broomtail grouper a BSB? (I really don't know)

That's broomtail.

They are long lived and not as common a catch as they once were but still common unlike BSB. Gill netters get 99% of them.

i was not aware that it was even an issue.  we board in a week and i will ask, but i would not have kept it if it is a problem.   :-\

Google "broomtail grouper California" and there was a Q&A with DFG Biologist Carrie Wilson in the Santa Barbara Independent back in 2010 that says both Gulf and Broomtails are illegal in CA since the 50's when there was a population in La Jolla. They're gone but the law is still on the books. Who knew?

Absolutely correct Mark. I meant to say that Broomtails are very rarely seen in California USA waters...still common south of the border until the gill netters finish their work :(.

Nice BT grouper there Alan and with Brian on the gaff....does his arms just keep getting bigger and bigger with age? I saw him work a 129 lb big eye one time without a rod belt, rail or anything, just the rod tucked under one arm and he man handled that fish right to the boat.

It burns me that something is illegal for no reason.  Just an old law still on the books, doing nothing but making it a pain for people who legally fish in another jurisdiction.  Aaarrrggghhh!!!!

That is a Scamp grouper (nickname Broomtail) and those are legal all year in the Gulf of Mexico, limit 4 per day.  Minimum length is 16 inches, so that would be more than legal ....  that is a great catch there Alan 8)

The gulf's Scamp grouper is a different species than the Broomtail of the west coast.  They do look very similar.
Besides, it's a law of the enlightened state of Klownifornia.
