Howzit AT family,
Here's a 114h with a Newell Black Marlin/Super Six kit installed that I got from Randy. It has the same line capacity as a 9/0 while being lighter weight. I did a little bit of work to get her ready to fish and more functional for shorecasting here in Hawaii. This older reel with outside access drags had a nice steel main gear and super clean over all but the thick 3 stack asbestos washers needed to go. I went with a 5 stack penn HT100 kit greased with Cal's. A nice fiery red 2 position power handle popped up on ebay for a good price. A major modification was removing the rear post to allow for thumbing during a cast, also installed newell screw plugs to seal the holes. Hard as it is to believe guys here do cast these on heavy surf rods and reach over 100 yards while targeting Ulua/Giant Trevally. She's spooled up with 500 yards of 100lb low diiameter GForce mono, definitely enough line! The standard reel for "Slide Baiting" is a 113hlw and this dwarfs it, a 4/0 wide feels like a jigmaster next to a Black Marlin!

I will be modding her to accept a 2nd AR dog but probably will hold off on going all out with SS gears, sleeve and dogs since I'm using stock drags right now and these internals are pretty beefy.

There used to be another stainless post there, but to allow for thumbing the spool during casting I removed it and plugged the holes with newell screw plugs like you'd see on a 300 series without a top bar.

Beautiful reel Kyle.  That red knob looks great and what a great idea to remove the rear post.  That reel looks like it is ready to handle the mother of all uluas, and I hope that you get to pull on one soon!

Thanks for the trade that got me this reel Randy. It's probably overkill for use on Oahu vs Big Island where there is way deeper water w/ more big fish. But at the very least it will look interesting in a line up next to 113hlw's, newell 550s, etc.

That's a sweet setup! You'll end up with all of the other mods, save the stainless gear set, soon.

I managed to pick one of these up, but I can't find that much info on it.  I didn't want to start a new thread since this one was perfectly titled and had a nice example in the first post.  It seems that this was a conversion kit, so I am to assume the only differences are the spool, posts and base.  Much like the difference in HL to HLW?  I know for a fact the screws for the handle side posts are stock 114H, as I used one for the 115L.  I've also read that the Black Marlin holds the same amount line as a 115L.  Is there somewhere that all of this info can be found?

Looks great Kyle, to good to fish with, I would be looking for a rough looking reel to fish with, generaly the internals are good, to fish with, most of them only need a good service, clean out, relube, give the drag some TLC, a second dog maybe, new line, then it would still catch fish, cheers Don.

Don, I have a reel that might work for you.  It feels good mechanically. I would rate it as a 7.5 cosmetically.  It is an era-correct Penn 114H with the external drag access and very nice red swirl knobbed 24-115 handle.  The left side outside trim ring is split, but aside from that, everything structural is in good shape with no cracks, chips or major scratches.  It has the complete original 3.5" wide (1/4" wider than the HLW) Newell Black Marlin kit installed, consisting of the aluminum spool, base and rod clamp, and the five posts. 

I can deliver it to Australia for $195 PayPal plus shipping at the actual cost of postage.  Please let me know if that works for you.

Randy, does yours have off color plates too?  Mine has the inverse of the 114HLW I have and I thought about matching the colors better.  Did all of the the senators of that period have red or maroon plates?

I'm no expert, but the plates on the above reel with the boat on the non handle side and the dark maroon color are the oldest version of the 114H quick access plates. The later bright red ones are injection molded and not near the quality of these.
I haven't had a problem with the later bright ones, but I know there was a recall on them that has long expired.

Hi Randy, thanks for the offer, sounds good & fair, but I brought a black one, with the outside access to the drag, it cost me AU $ 56.00 delivered home, I have stripped it, placed CF washers in it, runs real smooth, maybe someone else will be interested in yours, cheers Don.
