Title: come fishing with me on the argo out of san francisco, tuesday, july 14th, 2015
Post by: alantani on June 30, 2015, 08:47:57 PM
tony asked about a san francisco trip, so i spoke to a friend of mine about chartering his boat.  craig hansen owns the argo at san francisco's fisherman's wharf.  it's a 6 pack and the normal price is $175 per person. he is willing to give us the boat for a full day trip for $600 and it includes live bait.  so i need five more guys at $100 each.  joey will be our deckhand for the day.  i'm not sure if it will be salmon outside the gate, rockfish and lingcod along the coast, or halibut and stripers inside the bay.  it's a slow moving boat, but very relaxing.  to sign up, just post here and say "in" and then send me a paypal gift or a check.  thanks! alan

dom, i'm not sure.  if the salmon are biting, we may likely take a crack at them.  rockfish is always an option unless the weather is too bad.  then there are stripers and halibut in the bay.  with a 6-pack, we have lots of options!

we have lots of gear.  the only concern would be 2.5 pound lead balls, if we fish for salmon with sinker releases.  there are also two planer boards that joey has at the fisherman's warehouse, the pink ladies and the deep six planer boards.  i would rather use those than waste lead.

I've always used the dog whistles and less than 2.5# if it'll work (and the boat is not too crowded).

Last year at the salmon dinner I won a Luhr Jenson 'jumbo jet' diver supposed to go down 50'. I should give it a try.

My choice would start with rocks & lings (limits of course) then troll or mooch for salmon then. after limits, pick up butts at the gate. If any time was left we could back up to ocean beach and cast for stripers.

Don't forget... after salmon - barbless hooks only!

OK..Last time I went Salmon fishn' up north we was mooching live bait on 20# line and a Penn 209...What is this throw away 2.5lb. piece of lead? Alan I think I will use some of your gear as most of my stuff is to heavy for the little fishes in that bay  ;D Oh by the way what depth would we fish for lings & Halibut I'm used to 240' an below

I think my vintage seeker S670 with my Jigmaster for trolling ? What # line ? 20 or 30 ? I'll bring my spinner for most anything else and was thinking  my Seeker Black Steel 7' 30# and my JX would be enough. What say you ? I got so much junk t throw at fish I might as well bring some of it. This will be the first time I ever fished the SF bay

The rocks, lings (and salmon) are all outside the gate. Up the Marin coast or to the Farralones.
Max depth by regs for rocks & lings is 180 ft.
Up the Marin way is usually 40-70'. Farralones gets deeper.

I was out off the Marin coast yesterday on the 4th.
Lot's of humpbacks whales and lots of bait and boils.
We saw a few sharks in the 6-7 foot range breached completely,  getting some big air before
we dropped in.
It was flat calm outside, inside ...not so much.
Over the past few days an influx of new (much better quality) fish have
invaded the marin coast. We had two fish over 30#'s,
15 fish going 15-20#, and a handful 10# and unders.
We lost 6 30# plus at the boat. Trolled all day in the Slide Ranch, Rocky Pt.,
and Stinson Beach areas in 50-60 foot depth. Fish were taken at all depths
between 35-65 pulls.
Have fun on your trip.

I've had very good luck with a couple of Sausalito boats over the years.
I live in Walnut Creek and will take the 45min drive at 4am every time to Sausalito rather
that fight the tides across the bay to the gate from Emeryville or Berkeley.
Don't get me wrong, plenty of good boats and crew there also.
My go to salmon boat for the past 15 years is Roger Thomas's Salty Lady.
He and Jared are top notch skippers for putting you on fish and
taking care of the catch. Tuna and salmon need the white glove treatment.

Thanks Gman. I'm going to start using Sausalito and try the Salty Lady. I'm in Brentwood so it's your commute + 1/2 hour. At 4AM no sweat but coming back at 5PM... I pack a thermos of coffee & extra food for the ride home.

i spoke to craig this morning.  salmon is a possibility.  the bite has been spotty at best.  if we fish for salmon, we will be using 2.5 pound lead with sinker releases.  i have a few of these left, but craig will provide the rest at no cost.  i have four of the old 7 foot calstars with penn 320 gti's that can be used for 2.5 pound lead trolling.  i also have a bunch of leaders for hoochies and flashers, rotary salmon killers, or spoons.

if the salmon bite is off, we have an option for live bait rock cod and ling cod outside the gate.  if we go for salmon first and actually get a couple on the boat, rockcod fishing is a bit more complicated.  you can use artificial lures with single point, single shank, barbless j-hooks with no bait.  if you use bait, you have to use a barbless circle hook.  rock cod fishing, by the way, is very easy with barbless circle hooks!

stripers and halibut in the bay are a possibility, but craig checked the tides and they will not work for salmon first, then stripers or halibut.

the boat would leave the dock at 6:30am (according to the website) and return by 4pm.  i think we would want to be there by 5:30am.  i can throw a big ice chest in the back.  joey and i will put together some gear.  we have four salmon trolling rods and i can bring six shallow water rockcod rigs, lots of jigs and lots of leaders.  we need to see about lunch and that's about it.

Thanks for that info Alan.

I'm going to bring less than I thought earlier after seeing the .2 mile walk from the parking garage to Aliotos. Want to do it in one trip without looking looking like a refugee!

A light trolling rod, a light and and a medium jig stick. One plastic case hooks & lures and a box of sinkers. Lunch.

Also have to think about the walk back with all the fillets. Can't wait.

Does it make sense to go for rockfish first? Wil the Capt. decide. I happy whatever we do.

I clamp down on the barbs a lot of the time anytime. Easier to release when the freezer is full.

Quote from: alantani on July 08, 2015, 01:59:37 AMif we go for salmon first and actually get a couple on the boat, rockcod fishing is a bit more complicated.  you can use artificial lures with single point, single shank, barbless j-hooks with no bait.  if you use bait, you have to use a barbless circle hook.  rock cod fishing, by the way, is very easy with barbless circle hooks!

Does it make sense to go for rockfish first? Wil the Capt. decide. I happy whatever we do.

I clamp down on the barbs a lot of the time anytime. Easier to release when the freezer is full.

Hope this cocky talk doesn't jinx me.

Just so ya' know that will not likely satisfy CA DFG regs for barbless. If a q-tip is run over the barb and the slightest wisp is tugged off it is a violation and big time fine (like ~$500). :(.

Seem ridiculous but have seen reports of it happening to an unlucky guy trying to comply with regs.

That's good to know... when I've done it, it wasn't beause it was required but just to let some go with less blood. Didn't seem to notice losing any because of the barb.

thanks.

Once youv'e landed a salmon then any bait fishing after that uses in inline barbless circle hooks & lures can be barbless J-hooks.
Go for the rockfish first and you don't have to worry about it.

once you have a salmon on board, any hook in the water has to be barbless.  you know, you might hook up on one of those pesky salmon when you are targeting rockfish.

the skipper might want to target salmon at a particular time of the day, like first light.  he will know the water and the bite best.

I've never used circle hooks (barbless or otherwise) for Rockfish so I too would be interested in size and brand. As for going for Rockfish first then Salmon, I believe that since you cannot fish for Rockfish in the SF Management area in water deeper than 20 Fathoms (120 ft.) if you have Rockfish on board, you cannot fish for Salmon in water deeper than that depth. How bizarre is that regulation?

Aren't the barbless hooks only required when not trolling?
