Title: Saltist 50 levelwind , hi-speed or normal speed
Post by: bookerreese on September 07, 2009, 11:01:46 AM
am thinkin of gettin 1 of these reels to bottom fish  from seabass to tilefish.  when i get 1 i would want to send you the reel to upgrade
the stock drag washers to carbontex washers & upgrade the handle for your custom handles.  now my ??? is  the normal speed saltist is 4.9:1 with 22 lbs drag max while the hi=speed is 6.4:1 at 20lbs drag max, should i go for more torque or more speed ??? ???

personally, i like high speed reels.  higher speeds mean bigger main gears.  bigger main gears mean bigger drag washers and more drag. i'm not sure why the higher speed reel is rated for a lower drag. 20 pounds should be plenty, though.   for bottom fish, even (from what i understand) grouper, once you get them off the bottom, you own them.  so you can lift them up, wind down, lift up and wind down again.  seriously, i think this steady cranking business is overrated.  someday i'd actually like to catch a grouper.  until then, i'll just continue to talk through my hat!  alan
