Title: Bearing puller made from snap ring pliers
Post by: oldmanjoe on January 24, 2022, 07:12:10 PM
I had a gooden  stuck bearing in a cup ...       The usual bent bars were not getting it .
I picked up another 6 dollar snap ring pliers to cut up a set of jaws .

I picked the straight one and did a little grinding and cutting with a dremel cut off wheel to make this profile , a side by side picture of the two .

Here is a picture of it holding the bearing , i was able to hit the cup rim to free it up.

You're pulling the bearing out by grabbing the inner race.  Sometimes you just do what you gotta do to remove a stuck bearing.  But, pulling on the inner race can warp the cage so the bearing has to be replaced if you want it to preserve the free-spin time,

True, but by the time you have to resort to these measures the bearing is usually compromised by corrosion.  I am just happy if the inner race comes off the shaft so that I don't have to bust off the outer race AND the inner.

cheers

Once you grind it down the finish is gone. Anything good to coat it with to keep corrosion at bay?

Well...........No  ,Technically the cage is a ball spacer .    Most cage failure is done by trash in the bearing or wrong tool use .  Lady slipper bar styles will get the cage .

It's not a thrust bearing.  It's a radial bearing and was not engineered to take pressure from that direction.

It's easy enough to prove it to yourself.  Measure the free-spin time of a bearing. on a mandrel.   Anchor the outer race and then pull on the  inner race with your gizmo.  Then check the free spin time again using the same technique.

I may be overthinking this..

GFish is right to ask the question; and I am sure a a number of approaches can be taken to keep corrosion at bay, especially in harsh environments. But while thinking about finish preservations, And while I certainly do not think we will overextend Old Man Joe's awesome innovation, for any of us out there with the grinder getting happy making the puller teeth keep ion mind a lot of heat is probably not a good thing for long term strength....go slowly!!!!!  haven't made my set will but it is formally on the "todo" list. - john

Good thought. Go slow and have some water to cool the metal. Only started being corrosion-concerned since I moved to this humid, warm, salt-air environment. Most metal tools I have here started getting degraded so much more rapidly, after I moved from Calie. Now to decide which set of jaws from my Snap Ring pliers to modify. Great idea Joe!

The harbor freight ones are fairly hard steel , but still can be worked with a file .       Other brands maybe harder steel .
The dremel with the little cut off wheel does`n put to much heat into the steel jaws , your fingers will gage the heat . ::)
