Was the BG 30 main gear always made of pot metal? We have one BG 30 (and 8 Penn ss) which gets used pretty hard. The only problem with the BG 30 has been shaving a few of the gear teeth causing it to bounce when under pressure. The gear is simple to replace, but I wonder if the older models have a brass gear similar to the Penn.
