After reading Mo's post on the 925, I was reminded that I had a 935 model in the bin that I had picked up awhile ago and forgotten about. Since I'd sold my Slammer 360 I was in need of anther light duty surf reel and this seemed like it would fit the bill. After going through it, I think it'll be even better than the Penn :o If that doesn't raise some eyebrows, I'll also say that I like this model better than the couple of Quicks I've rebuilt :o :o (Take this all with a grain of salt because I have far less experience than most of you hear and probably don't know what I'm talking about :D )

Simple, strong frame and components.

Single bearing on the pinion that's sealed on the rotor side (great for surf conditions).

All the critical parts seem to be stainless, very few plastic parts. AR is on the pinion.

Like Mo, I made some CF discs to replace the felt ones. The 3 stack should put out plenty of drag.

This reel is so smooth and feels very strong without being too heavy. The AR is very quiet compared to one's I've used that are on the main gear (although personally I enjoy the sound of the ratcheting dog).

Great work Chad! These reels are fantastic, your assessment is dead on. Check the spring pressure on the AR. That spring behind the pawl may need a tweak. 8)
You got a good one, Chad. IMHO they're right up there with the Quicks and Shakes Royal Maroons, but lighter, which is even better. And I wouldn't doubt they're better than the Penns.

please guesstimate how likely skinny braid may be to sneak under the spool at highest point

Hope to get it spooled up and try it this week. I'll definitely follow up for you.
If it doesn't have good results, I guess I'll have to buy a spool of mono....

Interesting; impressive looking reel. A lot of plus power on the stat monitor. The more I think about it, having the AR ahead of the gear train seems like a very positive point.

This makes 7 or 8 threads for South Bend spinning reels in the last 5-6 weeks, about time for a South Bend category of its own. There are more South Bend reels out there l plan on buying whenever they become available, and I'll be sure to share info and pics.
I've forgotten about that knob Chad :) and yes it does look good on that reel.
Great job on the 935, it appears to be a very well made reel.

I have seen these reels before and knew they were worm gear drive reels but one think that scared me off from buying them was the bail trip lever appears to be plastic in the rotor cup assembly. Is that correct? I've never seen them up close, only in pictures. Everything else seems to be quality. I love my maroon Shakespeare reels, if these are even lighter then that is a bonus.

The bail trip is metal and slides in a plastic sleeve.

The bail stop is plastic but seems to be of good quality, not brittle. It also can be depressed to allow the bail to fold for travel.

Those, the drag knob and the AR lever, are the only plastic parts on the reel. And it's still pretty light.

I abosolutely love this reel! It is so smooth, and solid feeling and with the AR on the pinion gear it's pretty quiet too. I love the sound of the AR's on most reels, but little spinners with the AR behind the main gear seem to be so loud.
Always nice to see vintage reels getting it done. Good job Chad!

These South Bend Classics are the real deal Mike. I picked up a 935 I'm working on now...thinking I can make a great catfishing reel out of it. I'm just now getting into this "spinners for catfish" thing. Most folks doing it use new reels...and just toss them after every season. I'd rather use these quality reels. 8)
There are so many vintage reels I just can't have because they are left hand wind only. That's why I love the Quicks, Penns, later Cardinals and Shakespeare 2400 series. Very happy anyway.
That South Bend is a very nice reel.

I read your comments on south bend classic 935 before I placed a bid on an auction online, thought it was a large reel for surfcasting, just received it yesterday, it is a very cute small light weight reel, I m going to service it in one or two weeks, I love all sort of vintage fishing reel, especially spin reels.

you are right, it's not a huge reel. But load it up with some braid and it will handle a lot bigger fish than you'd think! These are built very well.
