i know these are freshwater reels..very popular. I was wondering if its a really bad idea to use in the salt for fluke fishing..can I make it more saltwater resistant?

just go through it first, then open it up and check it after a few trips.  then you will have a better idea!

You talking about a newer model of the Curado, or the older "Greenies" ??

Feel the newer stuff may need more frequent servicing.

These are probably the most salt water resistant baitcaster ever made, IMHO.

Prepare them for their intended use, and break them down every so often to check that they are not needing some TLC.

They are a tool intended to be used for any type of fishing.

Cheers.

Used mine in the salt for years. Tough reels, just need to replace the spool bearings, pinion bearing and drive shaft bearing after long periods of heavy use.

Can you discuss what you do to prepare them for saltwater use?

Nothing more than making sure that everything is lubed, to give the metal parts protection from the intrusion of saltwater.

Spool bearings oiled only, so be sure to keep checking them. The anti-reverse bearing should only have a drop of oil applied to the rollers, but, grease on the casing to avoid it rusting in the housing. The drive shaft bearing needs to be packed with grease, as this is the worst place for water intrusion.

I apply a mix of Super Lube grease and Shimano oil to the level wind where they are used in saltwater or brackish conditions. For freshwater I only apply TSI321 to the worm shaft.

Sure you know all this already  ;)
