Title: Did we ever find out what the "T" designates?
Post by: Recoil Rob on June 05, 2020, 04:10:47 PM
I have a G440T, I bought it new in the 1980's. I used to codfish with it, now that I've upgraded the drag with one of Bryans kit's I may use it for some light rolling.

I read Tunacious' history of Newell and there is passing mention to the "T" suffix on a reel but not what it means.

I will say this, the original box states the reel has 5:1 gearing but it really has 4:1 gearing. This model has the red stripe handle too.

Any idea's what is going on?

thanks,

Rob

Rob, according to this Newell 1980s catalog, the "T" stands for trolling.  It appears that the difference between the T and the more common F model is that the T has the top crossbar and is geared 4:1 vs 5:1 for the F.  There is also a J model (for jigging) which shares the top crossbar with the T and the 5:1 gears with the F.

Thanks VOT, makes sense. Looks like I arrived at trolling with it on my own, It's on a Shimano Beastmaster 20-50# and I'm thinking it has about 500 yds of Daiwa Dendoh 55# on it. Flatline tuna rod!
