Title: 20/0 KITS: Here they are!
Post by: Vintage Offshore Tackle on June 22, 2018, 12:36:52 AM
I will begin shipping tomorrow.  If anyone has not paid for their kits yet, please do so now by PayPal to rosygirl900@aol.com.  If you would prefer to send a check, please PM me for my address.

Once I figure out the shipping costs, I will let you know if you owe me.  If you have overpaid, I will send you a refund.  For those of you who had Tiburon inscribe their frames, please hold off on sending your $20 until I get you the amount owed for shipping if any.

I hope that you all love the kits.  The lines that you see on the bottom of the frame on the third photo are reflections of the white shelving in Tiburon's staging area, not flaws in the anodizing, and yes, I know that you do not put the rod brace on the threads of the reel seat!

Thanks again for making this project possible.

Randy

Thank you Mike, Adrian, John, Daron, Chad, Mo, Fat Tuna and Tony!

The next brand new project is going in the opposite direction, an extra narrow Jigmaster, and I had better get my rear end in gear and start selling them because there are forty of them coming next month.

Thanks again,

Thanks again,

No. 1 would be a stainless sleeve from Tom, but I think those are out of stock at the moment.
No. 2 is an insert Kit from Adam. Availability is always an issue on custom parts. I buy them when they are available.
No. 3 is a Stainless Handle Arm, also from Adam. His offset models are the best there is.
No. 4 is a 5/0 Grip.
With these four parts alone, it makes a much stronger reel and it makes it look so much better than stock.
Using the stock plates allows for ss double dogs. A Must with a reel like this.
Cutting plates for the dogs is not advisable if you aren't familiar. If you ruin it. Good luck finding a 16/0 side plate for less than you want to pay.
This is a long post, but all I did to this 16/0 was clean it up and put in a new 7 stack of Carbon Fiber.
Mike caught a 14' Tiger Shark on it. It made me feel good that my work made it Happen for him.
After his catch, I did replace the Brass sleeve with a stainless one. I think that is all you really need.
New Carbon Fiber stack and a Stainless sleeve,

Mike

Mike, my reel did not need any shims, and it's a good thing because when I opened the bag of 60 shims to pack them to ship three per kit, I discovered that the inside diameter of the hole in the shims that I received is too small to fit on the spool shaft. They must be for a smaller reel.

Just to make sure that the Tiburon shaft was not oversized, I tried them on the stock Penn spool that came out of the reel and the shim was too small for that one too.

I didn't not want to delay shipping the kits, so I am going to send them out without the shims.  If anyone needs shims, please let me know and I will have Mo mail them directly to you.  Hopefully everyone's installation will go as smoothly as mine did.

Thanks,

Randy

Thanks a million for the info Daron.  Just one stupid question:  Are Carbon Fiber and Carbontex and HT-100 all basically the same material?
Title: Re: 20/0 KITS: Here they are!
Post by: Shark Hunter on June 22, 2018, 05:23:40 PM
I've always used laminated Carbon Fiber sheet or ordered from Mystic parts. I've never ordered carbontex, so I'm not able to answer that.
My opinion is you can't go wrong using any of these three methods. They are proven.
Title: Re: 20/0 KITS: Here they are!
Post by: thorhammer on June 22, 2018, 05:41:52 PM
HT-100 is a carbon fiber fabric that's laminated on fiberglass to provide stiffness in large sheets and then cut into strips. These strips are run through a stamping die to produce washers of various sizes to compliment Penn's original sizes of asbestos type washers as well as new designs. Since the introduction of HT-100, almost every other reel manufacturer is now using some form of carbon fiber drag washers. Penn's Dura-drag material is also another variation of the original material.

This is from Penn directly.

Thank you Daron and John.  I bought some HT-100s for my 20/0 and I just wanted to make sure that they were the right kind.

We need side plates now. I got a friend who is currently fabricating his own CNC and maybe we can attempt at building the side plates. but I don't know if plates require a 5 axis CNC or Lathe. Maybe they can be made either way.

I picked up my 20/0 spool/frame from Randy, yesterday, and just installed it without any issues.  Mine did not need shims, and everything fit absolutely perfect.  The 20/0 kit is truly a work of art!  Attached is my 20/0 next to an old school 14/0 vom Hofe.  Thanks to Randy for all the time he put into this project!!

Cheers,
John

I am using a united composites gladiator 7'6" blank. This is for shark fishing and the rod can be used as a rail rod also. I haven't made a final decision on the blank. I have one already but I might save it for another project.

Thanks to everyone for all of the posts and photos, and to the Alantani.com ohana for supporting these projects, and to Alan for giving me the forum and access to this world of fellow fishing fanatics.  Thanks especially to those who funded these 20/0 kits for their confidence and for trusting me with their money.

This one probably would not have gotten off of  the ground without Mike and Daron's suggestions and encouragement, and it would not have been possible without Tiburon's technical expertise and passion for fishing and their willingness to invest disproportionate amounts of their time and resources when they could be spent on more profitable ventures.  It's really exciting to see a wild idea turned into reality!

I had to leave again for LA last Friday and was only able to ship a few kits before I left.  I will be home on Tuesday night and will ship all of the rest of the kits on Wednesday.  I will send the tracking numbers as soon as I print the shipping labels.  Please accept my apology for the delay.

Thanks again,

Randy

Chad, before I gave Tiburon the go-ahead on this project, I obtained their commitment that this run of twenty would be the only one, ever.  They have been honorable in all of our dealings to date, so I expect them to keep that promise.  This was a difficult project for them, different in scale from anything that they had done before, so even without our agreement, I believe that they would be very hesitant to take it on again.

On the brighter side, just think how much money you saved by not buying one, and all of the cool stuff that you can buy with it!

Thanks,

Randy

Mike, this is just my opinion, but I don't think that any mods will be necessary, just tighten the reel seat as tight as you can get it, then make sure that the rod clamp and both braces are tightened evenly and as tight as you can get them, then go back and see if you can get the reel seat any tighter.

Did you have anything in particular in mind?  Any suggestions as to how to beef up the connections would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Randy

Hello Randy, I'm not sure how many members have assembled this 20/0 kit,  I did not purchase one, but I'm assembling one for a member and run into a problem.
The left side plate and right side plates will not sit properly on the new kit:

I've also tried it with a brand new 16/0 plate with same results:
The plates are hitting the narrower part of the recessed area:

I'm not sure why it is machined as such, or if I'm the only lucky one.
I know that you've assembled one and so has Daron .
Daron mentioned that the rad braces fit nicely with the wider kit, this tells me he has his assembled.
So, could you or Daron, or anyone else for that matter that has assembled one please show me a pic of the frame?

Thank you!

Sal

Dear Sal,

I am sorry that you are having a problem assembling Mike's 20/0 kit.  I think that we can take care of it, and if I can't, I will refund Mike's money.

I will attach some photos, as you requested, but I don't see any difference between the photos that you posted and my kit.  I can't take any photos of the frames alone because they have all been shipped, and so far, everyone who I have heard from who has assembled their kits has done so successfully.

I am sure that you have experienced the problem of trying to get new trim rings installed on Penn side plates.  I don't know if the side plates swell, or there is some other cause, but I frequently find that the rings will not fit until you relieve the grooves in the side plates a little bit.

I believe that since the flange on the Tiburon frame replaces the inner trim ring, this is may be your problem.  My side plates were a tight fit, but I just gradually snugged down the screws without the outer trim ring (to avoid damaging the ring), and it sucked right into the frame, and then I removed the screws, installed the outer trim ring, and re-installed the screws.

Am I understanding the problem that you are having correctly?  If so, and if you cannot get it assembled using the method that I described above, would you mind relieving the grooves in the side plate so that it will fit?  I would be happy to pay you for your time. If you would rather not do that, or if I have misunderstood the problem that you are having, please let me know.

Thank you,

Randy

My experience when assembling aluminum frames with stock sideplates is the same as Sal & Randy —

On a typical stock Senator, there is a little flex in the rings — and the plate is not going into a rigid frame — it is a little more forgiving.  Even with an inner ring, many times, a few careful laps around the plate with a hand file are required to remove a Mil, or so.  Grease the plate, and ease it in place.

On these rigid frames with their tight tolerances — very light file work is needed more often than not.

Even when I pull NOS plates out of bins that they have lived in for 30 years or more — this is true.  Temperature swelling occurs just enough to make a tight fit worse.

Sal, Daron, Randy, and many others already know this — this is just for others who may not have realized this yet.

Best,

Fred

Hello Randy, thanks for the pics. I actually shouldn't have asked for those, I should have taken a closer look and realized you already had them up.

I hear you on the swelling of the plates and have seen it myself, but I do believe this is not the case with this one.
If you go back on my explanation you will notice that I also tried the kit with a brand new 16/0 plate that has never been exposed to weather, grease, or anything else.

I'm no pro on assembling reels, I have done a couple here and there, so maybe it is me that doesn't know how to handle this situation,
especially since no one else is having issues.

I tell all my customers to purchase a 14/0 plate for $50, when they want me to customize their 16/0, so I won't need to gring a 16/0 plate.
I'm  definitely not willing to force the plate in by tightening the screws, I'm also not willing to shave a 16/0 plate, but I thank you for the offer.

I just agreed to assemble this reel for Benni...a great member on our community and he only deserves the very best.
I will chat with him to where he wants to go with it, it will really be up to him.

I want to mention that I took the time to check everything out, Tiburon did a good job on the kit.
I do not have fancy measuring tools, but when comparing it doesn't really matter, as long as you use the same measuring device for both.
The spool is very close to stock, just 1/64th narrower... this isn't even worth mentioning, since they did make it up with the frame, they actually went tighter, which is a good thing.

The spool shaft is spot on, same distance from the edge of the spool to the tip of the shaft on both sides.
The spool ratchet is about 1/8" closer to the bearing, I'm not sure why, but they probably had a good reason. I know it would engage the clicker a little better, but wasn't able to test.

Thank you for getting right on this to make this better Randy, even though it probably won't need a thing after all.

I haven't assembled my kit yet, but after seeing this, I wanted to check the fitment.
A 14/0 is going do be my donor, since It will be much easier to build another around the spool with new parts.
The fit is tight, but not so much that you have to screw it down to make it fit.
What is key here is making sure it slides it perfectly flat. It took me a few tries.
There is a small lip inside the frame, but when lined up properly, mine snapped right in with little effort.
You will know you got it when it makes a snapping noise getting past that lip with minimal force.
As you can see, it is not screwed down, but flush with the bottom, with no modifications.
These are just my personal results.
Very impressed with the Tolerances of this kit.
Daron

I just gave my 20/0 a mock up assembly no grease on threads just to see fit and mine went together snug but perfect. I used a later mint 16/0 with the white handle. I did find 2 of the thin shim washers on the head plate side of spools shaft and included them when I put it into 20/0 frame and spool fit nice with no end play. Seems to operate perfect with good free spool, clickers good and all old drag material seems good and performs good. As custom parts become available I am gonna have Sal beef mine up with double dogs, SS Sleeve, new drag washers and what ever else is available !! I am having a friend of mine who is a very skilled machinist make me up a cool handle and grasp which I will post pics of when it's done "if it comes out like I hope" Lol !!!  My goal is to catch a Giant Bluefin up in PEI with it next fall !! And it will be in the rod holder not stand up !!!! Lol !!!!  I hope everyone who is building one of these with custom parts will share what they find and post pics as they go !!
   Thanks Randy !!!!!!       John Taylor

Ok I just wanted to post that I was able to make the kit work
(https://i.imgur.com/fedpxYD.jpg)
everything fits nice and the reel is working flawlessly
(https://i.imgur.com/VZ58lpZ.jpg)
This one needed 2 shims on each side of the spool, you could use the shims that you will find on the older spool, but you will need to file the ID  a little...it doesn't take much.
Tiburon spool shaft is a hair thicker than stock...not a bad thing.
Spool is nice and centered
(https://i.imgur.com/JYZGpXB.jpg)
I was using the file but wasn't covering any grounds, I decided to use my Foredom and it worked like a charme
(https://i.imgur.com/rtv34zW.jpg)
it actually looks as it was always there
(https://i.imgur.com/OXjQpOP.jpg)
If there is anyone else with the same issue, give the dremel a shot, all you need to do is to rest the bit on ridge and it will keep it aligned.
Yes, this one was assembled by Sal
(https://i.imgur.com/6Ey82g8.jpg)
You are something Benni ;D...enjoy the reel.

Right side plate slipped right in. Left side ,3 slaps of my palm. The harness lugs a little tight. No problems with tapping lugs screw holes until they line up. Side plates used were from a new Penn 14/0 . I couldn't bear to rob parts from my 16/0 or 14/0.   Nice fitment here. It's a beauty R.P.

New Carbon Fiber stack and a Stainless sleeve,
http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=22384.0
This is the whole hog version, but like I said, most of these parts are unavailable now.
Stainless Main Gear, Sleeve, Dogs, Handle and all that was available at the time.
http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=15476.0

It will not be much longer on the drag kits.  The cf material has been an issue, but I believe its sorted now(new supplier).  My first batch of washers will be done next week, and once I confirm that they are good, I will get the material ordered for the big senator kits. Handles are always available, but depending on my stock it may be a week or two before they can ship.

I agree!
Here are a few pics of BIGFOOT fresh from the oven. I have a special16/0 donor reel on the way that should arrive today. I'm planning on using the original crank arm from the donor reel. It has the post but the torpedo style handle is missing. I'm hoping to be able to figure out a way (with help from you all) to put a handle on it. Also, it's going to need to be re- chromed. Any suggestions about that would be appreciated as well. Randy and Tiburon a first class job all around.

Here is the rod I am using for my 20/0. It's a Calstar 130RT Blank with a mint set of Tycoon / Fin-Nor guides and roller top. The butt is some sort of dark dense wood mounted in a Lakeland reel seat and ferrule. My buddy Dave Turner of    http://turnerscustomrods.com   made the rod for me. He did a very nice job on everything from the cork grip and he even made the Micarta winding checks front and back of the cork grip. He is very fussy !!!! I haven't finished the internals of the reel yet so I didn't bother with the front and back rod braces yet or the rod clamp.

I plan on breaking the rod and reel in up in PEI next fall hopefully with a couple more 20/0 owners with me !!! I will use mine in the rod holder so will use a Lakeland seat with an Aluminum bent butt in it not the nice pretty wooden butt. That's all I got !!!  Lets hear what some of the rest of you are doing ??    John Taylor   Tap on pics to blow up.

Well there are a lot of boats up in PEI !!  I have fished up there two different years the first time two of us went up and day one was really sloppy and I was feeling WHITE most of the day !! Lol ! We hooked up only once that day and pulled the hook after a half hour. The next we got blown out and went home. The next year we fished 4 days the first two were slow but the last two days we hooked up 6 or 7 times and brought 4 to boat side ! What a blast !! Maybe we could get a group from this board up there next fall ??

Mike I also like the black reel I think the etching came out much better on the black it shows up really nice ! You could bring your 16/0 super rig up there !!!!       John Taylor

Mike, I am going to be using one of the boat's stand-up rods, whichever one that the captain wants to use.  These are 5.5'-6' with a short adjustable butt and very heavy action to fish 200 lb. line.  Last year, he had me using an acid-wrapped rod (you can see in the photo that the guides are rotated counter-clockwise with the tip being upside down like a spinning rod), which looked bizarre to me at first sight, but I didn't really notice any difference in the action.

I think that reel would be perfect for your Black Hole rod. Go for it, stand up ;)

I am gonna answer for Randy. There has probably been more Giant Bluefin Tuna caught on stock 16/0 and 14/0 Penn Senators than any other reel or reels combined !!! So probably with some nice modifications these will be perfect for Giants !!!  The only draw back I see with these is the slower retrieve when a fish is coming at you or your trying to run him down to gain line back you will have to crank like hell ! These are gonna hold a bunch of line so shouldn't be any trouble. They should be great once fish is circling up lots of power !!! I think they will work fine.  That's my take on them.   John Taylor

Mike, I was typing this message while John Taylor was posting his, so please forgive me for any duplication.  John and I agree that more giant bluefin have been caught with the Penn 14/0-16/0 than any other reels, and probably more than with all other reels combined.  99.9% of these fish were caught with zero upgrades and without the benefit of today's HT-100 drag washers. Those reels stood up to the stress of fishing 130 lb. and sometimes 200 lb. line, even though the frame construction consisted of the stamped brass Penn reel seats, which bend very easily, and only the little brass tubes connecting the side plates, which do little to prevent torquing and misalignment of the side plates.

The increased strength and perfect side plate alignment provided by the Tiburon one-piece aluminum frame and the heavy duty machined aluminum rod clamp more than make up for any added stresses resulting from the 20% increased width.  I plan to put the 20/0 to the test at Price Edward Island in September. I don't think that the low gear ratio will be a problem, given the huge spool diameter, but the size and weight of the big Penn, and the lack of a low gear make it less than ideal for stand up fishing, but I hope to give it a go anyway.

I have had a few requests to show the Senator 20/0 compared to an Everol 20/0.
I am fortunate enough to now own 2 of the biggest reels currently manufactured in the world.
That feat was only accomplished by dealing with Everol Italy. The Mother Ship.
Paolo and Giovanni, I thank you. ;)
The frame dimensions are pretty much identical, But the Everol is wider only because of the two speed gear case, and the much beefier frame to handle the drag that no ordinary man could handle.
This is apples to oranges, but I hope you enjoy the photos.
Big Thanks to Randy for offering the only Senator 20/0.
I am proud to own one of only 20 made. ;D

Dan

Find a charmer that triple dips prior to chroming, this is the old school way. Not sure if chromium or nickel works better in the salt water environment. But I know some old School car guys who swear by Nickel chrome plating as being vastly superior to the newer style chrome process.

This one is a little late to the party but I have her mostly complete. I went with the black frame and black Spool and I think it makes for a pretty good look. I have to thank John Taylor and his friend, the wizard, for making my handle design a reality. I have always liked the S curved handles and thought it would be a good fit. I still have a couple other customizations I'm going to do but next is to buy or build the right rod. I'm planning to take this rig shark fishing this summer.

Mike that S handle polished up nice !!! You got to thank "Striper Lou" for that little piece of red swirl acrylic he gave me that for one of my handles and that was a small piece that was left over. I wish I had thought of doing that little red insert before Rollie had finished the white Catalin material on the ends of the grasp as a nice small piece of that red blended into white ends on knob would have looked cool. Looks mint anyway.  Nice Job on reel Mike !!     John Taylor

That shark was actually caught on a 16/0 Senator and a massive custom built big game rod.  I had every intention of going back to that same pier with  with the 20/0 this past summer and trying my luck. But with the stinking virus causing mayhem that never happened. This summer it might. I did however finally get a suitable rod for the big reel. It's a Tycoon Tackle HRH and is solid hickory. I'll start a new thread in fishing vintage tackle as the adventure gets underway. Here's a pic of the rod and 20/0 reel

hi,
thanks for the replys, seems like some are actually simular crazy as me and using this reels.

To not open a new thread and cause I know some of the guys with the 20/0 senators have an everol 20/0 as well, how do they go, any problems, pro's, con's(aside from weight)? I'm looking to buy one soon and then in fall or next year a second and a third if I don't have problems, in my case it's about that I love using heavy line and lots of it and I'm already using 120lb of drag on 50W's...
Oh and if I finally get to fish my 20/0 I'll make videos with it too, but first testing the heat build up with a car peeling line off to don't risk heat damage and for getting used to back off the drag when the line  level drops(my current reels only have minimal change in drag between empty and full spool)!
Best Regards, Marlon
