tim, there is a 50/50 chance that i will be in fresno over the weekend. from there we can leave on sunday for cayucos, then fish monday, head back to fresno on monday evening, drop off the fish and then i can return home on tuesday. a half dozen things have to fall into place first. i will know better on friday. for now, can you check to see if they have squid? ;D

Glad a couple of you are gonna be able to take advantage of the deal i posted....I was sure someone would jump all over it!!!!
Aye, when do you guys decide?
"About 105%..." still has bits of ambiguity.
I may attempt getting a green light from Mission Control to drive up from San Diego for a this.

Alan since I will have the kids (19 but still kids to me), why don't I bring the fish back to your parents like last time? This would save gas and time for you.

Thanks for the intel JT, but I don't need whole squid to fish with. Alan on the other hand ;D They do have 1lb. boxes for an inflated price at Virg's. Jonathan they're doing real good on Yellowtail out of the Channel Islands. Since your there ?

::)
Big Baits catch Big Fish, right? So I got to much time on my hands and a broken 11" green mack Zukers trolling lure, an old monti hoochie lure and time on my hands ::) Alan I'm having trouble with getting the knots closer. I got about 1" of travel and would like this tighter. Could you bring some #50 or #60 mono and maybe we could tighten this rig up a bit over a few drinks this weekend ;D
BT
MY NEW LING COD KILLER
OK let's start with the broken lure and the Monti. I reversed the skirt on the Zuker's and attached with rubber bands to make a parachute lure.

Add a couple more beads and a 6oz. torpedo weight. The lure is 8" long and total weight is 11oz. Needs a bit of tightening and some squid strips ;D Not whole squid Alan ;D

I was going to go to my local Asian market and buy a some for myself, a couple lbs for Alan and can pick up for anyone else who wants some.
Steve
They usually provide strip squid for everyone but if you want to use whole squid like Alan you need to bring your own.

Wai, sounds like fun and I'm sure y'all will have a blast, but with the Jewish High Holidays just around the corner I can't really leave my 101-year-old Dad... plus, a 600-plus mile round trip solo drive is frankly too daunting a prospect for me. :P

Actually Tim it seems the one reason you need as an excuse to get together is a good deal on a fishing trip!!!
I'm gonna try to go on the late oct / early nov trip but it'll depend on the status of my injury....If i can't make that one I'll definitely go on a trip before the season ends....I gotta get one trip in the break in that new reel Fred made for me!!!!
If any of you are gamblers......I got $5 says that lure you made wins the jackpot fish!!!! (or the smallest!!!!)
I'll be driving thru the OC so at least two 99 Ranches within striking distance from I-5, I-405...
I picked up two 3# boxes of squid for $12 each at my local Asian supermarket (we could eat them for dinner!).
The bait shops around here charge $6 to 8 for a 1# box.
Putting away the squid I found 2 1# boxes buried in my freezer.
I've got 8# total... who wants any?
steve
I'll see if 99 Ranch has 5lb boxes and pick one up...may check the bottom of my freezer as well ;D. So potentially 13+ lbs total...I think we're covered.

More Squid than anyone could ever use on a 3/4 day ;D Dinner though? That's a thought.

Quick recon of the San Diego 99 Ranch said $13.59/3lb. $4+ seems to be the going rate of food-grade squid.
Wow.
Found I had 1.5lb left over in bottom of the freezer from a $5.99 box purchased two years ago. That and the boat's cut squid will do me just fine.

Well ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
Us working folk wanna know what we missed out on.....or maybe we don't ::)
We all hit limits...by our own doing or by the overflow from other sacks.
Alan has the photos. He and Steve managed lings. Tim and I struck out in that dept.
When I left Cayucos to drive back down to San Diego, those three had a nearly full bottle of Bulleit and at least a six-pac to be imbibed...and that's all I know.
Tim made a mean "Okie Poke" and seared BFT...thanks Tim!
The Tani Family's Cayucos vacation home is very convenient and minutes to the landing. Thanks for letting us crash there, Alan!!!
Steve, young grasshopper, you must learn patience by snatching pebble from hand, ignoring the "bleach-and-piss" on your fish thing, and getting the line on that Pro Gear re-spooled properly. Comfortably Numb ;D
i got to be a true fishing bum this weekend! ed gave me a ride from saratoga to sanger, tim gave me a ride from clovis to cayucos, and steve gave me a ride from cayucos back to saratoga!
so, saturday morning ed drove me to sanger and we worked all day clearing out the brush from all the almonds that he was going to sweep up on monday. man, talk about a workout. i'm still sore from all of that. i crashed out at 9pm, woke up and 6am and we all headed out to breakfast. tim met us at the local perko's and then we headed to cayucos. we are on the road by maybe 7:30am and arrived to cauycos mostly in time for the 49er's game. missed the kickoff, but had plenty of time to watch the niner's get creamed. then we watched the raider's game and they weren't much better.
steve arrived a few hour later and we all started going through gear.
this is just a rockcod trip, right?

wai arrived at 9pm and i was out soon after. we were all awake by 5am and headed to virg's. they actually have a nice selection of gear!

we had to drive a few blocks from the office to the boat, parked and lined up.
fishing was really slow. i got a few small rockfish, and lost a half dozen hitch hiker lings, then finally managed to stick this one.
the ride back was pretty flat. there was plenty of fish to go around, mostly small, but this was their monday "cheapskate's" special, so there were 35 guys on the boat. it was tough fishing.

i got to be a true fishing bum this weekend! ed gave me a ride from saratoga to sanger, tim gave me a ride from clovis to cayucos, and steve gave me a ride from cayucos back to saratoga!
so, saturday morning ed drove me to sanger and we worked all day clearing out the brush from all the almonds that he was going to sweep up on monday. man, talk about a workout. i'm still sore from all of that. i crashed out at 9pm, woke up and 6am and we all headed out to breakfast. tim met us at the local perko's and then we headed to cayucos. we are on the road by maybe 7:30am and arrived to cauycos mostly in time for the 49er's game. missed the kickoff, but had plenty of time to watch the niner's get creamed. then we watched the raider's game and they weren't much better.

steve arrived a few hour later and we all started going through gear.

this is just a rockcod trip, right?

one dead soldier.

wai arrived at 9pm and i was out soon after. we were all awake by 5am and headed to virg's. they actually have a nice selection of gear!

we had to drive a few blocks from the office to the boat, parked and lined up.
fishing was really slow. i got a few small rockfish, and lost a half dozen hitch hiker lings, then finally managed to stick this one.
the ride back was pretty flat. there was plenty of fish to go around, mostly small, but this was their monday "cheapskate's" special, so there were 35 guys on the boat. it was tough fishing.

after we got off the boat, we headed back up to the shop and also stopped to check out jerry's marine. this is where randy pauly has alot of his reels.

we had a chunk of bluefin left, so tim seared it and fed wai before he had to hit the road.
tim made pasta for us.

Thank Alan...Keeping with the 12 year old rule. All I can say fishing with this wrecking crew is not for the faint of heart ;D

Looks like more great times I missed out on, I gotta get the Long Hall up and running soon or I'm going to have a melt down.
I must say this. Alan is no BUM. Fishing or otherwise. It was a struggle to keep him from paying for everything. His generosity is unmatched, his mom and dad met me today with smiles and hugs, coffee and cookies just because I brought them a few fillets. I sat with Mrs. Tani for several minutes before she let me give her fish and when Mr. Tani arrived he blocked my car with a small farm vehicle and trailer until I assured him we had a great time and several beers ;D A truly great family...Thank you.
BT
Tim posted while I was writing this; and to build on that...I hate I missed this trip because it looks like a blast, but as much because I might have had a chance at actually prepping a meal for the crowd and letting Alan chill for a minute and get some of his generosity paid back.
Great write up gents, thanks for taking us along. I for one wish I was up in there with the whole thing.
Steve, I don't know what exactly was your Fred Hall special; but I'm still thanking you for the lend on the Surfmaster for my first salmon (should've been first three, my choke).
Would've loved to have met Wai and Tim. Next time boys!!!! I do like that brown water ya'llz had in that highball glass.....

Stunning Wai ;D
BT
Gotta love that steamed fish.
Looks really really good to me right now!
Nice going guys, way to pick up a few fillets!!!
Looks like we all missed a great time and awesome food...oh well theres always next time..or the time after that...
Well, I might be a bit slow but from my observations I've determined something. I want to be friends with the cooks!
Tim's Alfredo would quickly have me looking for a fork and a nice piece of sour dough. And then Wai's steamed fish, wow another favorite.
And to top it off, a bottle of Jack? Looks like a perfect weekend to me.

Wai I am sorry I missed this one , , even if the fishing was slow.
I prefer the flavor of the Olives for what ever reason.
What ingredients did you use for steaming?
I started separating my fillets by species a few years ago , there is a significant difference in flavor from type to type.
I prefer the Olives and Reds as well as the smaller Lings.
Best,
JT
The following assumes that the fish has already been gilled and gutted. Will need a steamer with a rack (or something) for plated fish to sit above the boiling water.
- 1. Scale fish and scrape out as much remaining bloody residue from cavity; rinse.
- 2. Dry off fish of excess water
- 3. Lay fish on steaming plate. On each side of fish, use knife to evenly score 2-3 times, top to bottom
- 4. Lightly salt each side and the cavity
- 5. Take julienne green onions and julienne/sliced ginger and stuff cavity
- 6. Place julienne green onions and julienne/sliced ginger on side of fish facing up
- 7. Boil up water in covered steamer until steaming (will need enough to complete cooking without drying up)
- 8. Place plated fish into steamer on to rack in steamer and cover. Steaming time: 1 min/oz up to 10oz, for EACH oz above 10oz add 30secs. (After steaming enough fish, you'll get a good sense of the time needed without weighing)
- 9. Two minutes before fish is finished steaming, take a small sauce pan and heat up several tablespoons of cooking oil with a couple of dashes of sesame oil (quantity will depend on sized of fish) until it starts to smoke (usually about 1-2 minutes, do not burn the oil !!!). Shut off burners to both fish and oil and drizzle heated oil on top of fish. Be carefull of splatters when doing this.
- 10. Drizzle soy sauce on fish and serve.
I usually just scrape the skin off and eat only the meat; be wary of the bones when getting meat from the rib cage regions. When steaming whole fish, remember to get the cheek muscles (the best part!!!) out of the fish head. No skin because I read somewhere that the fat under the skin has higher concentrations of accumulated toxins than the meat.
Thanks!
I couldn't figure if it was all scallions or some other green vegi.....
I will give this a try tomorrow night!
Best,
Jonathan
Wai,that looks fantastic. I want to know what you did to make sure your fish was free of any pathogens ;D Inside joke guys...looks great my friend.
