Title: wintertime reel service for everyone.
Post by: alantani on January 17, 2018, 08:15:19 PM
wintertime reel service for everyone.  yes, this applies to you.  all of you.  no exceptions, no excuses!  ;D

even if you can't field strip a big lever drag, you can work a screwdriver.  there is still something that you have to do.  i can't think of a single reel where the removal of one screw disables the reel.  so what i'd recommend is removing every visible screw, one at a time.  back out the screw, grease it or add corrosion x, put it back, tighten it down a little, and then move on the to next.  yamaha marine grease is preferred, but anything is better than nothing,  and you should never have more than one screw out at a time.  if you can't remove it by hand because it's too corroded, then add a little but of a light oil around the top of the head if the screw and consider sending it in at some point.

you should be able to do this, one screw at a time, for any reel.  the one exception is the screws that hold on the reel seats (bases) for the small okuma reels.  they use small fine thread metric machine screws held in with loctite.  it's really easy to snap these off.  for the small okuma reels, just add corrosion x or grease around the head of the screw and call it done.

for the rest of the reel, manually add reel x with a dropper bottle to the corners and creases where corrosion happens, then wipe it down.  alternatively, tape the line and spray the outside of the reel with aerosol corrosion and then wipe it down to remove the excess.  reel x from a dropper bottle is preferred, but any light oil is better than nothing.  i cheat.  i have both the aerosol corrosion x and the reel x in a dropper bottle.  when the reel x is gone, i spray corrosion x in the dropper bottle and i save a bunch of money!

you have plenty of time, but spring will be here before you know it.  ping me if there are any questions!  alan

sooo, Boss, early winter time is the start of fishing season here, no time to service your toys.

I normally do that to my reels on mid summer time, its too dang hot that you "skip" fishing for 4-6 weekends.
corrosion X on spray can saves a lot of time applying it on reel seats, external visible bearings, handle bearings, they wipe out the excess with a rag and then pass the same rag over your rods blanks, guides and reel seats, I also use Inox MX3 lubricant on spray cuz is really friendly to use it indoors

I have 9 reels apart and in ziplock bags waiting on parts and over 40 charter boat reels backlogged.  I also have a Penn US113 that I have not looked at since the kidney bolder decided my ureter was a good place to camp that I have to get back to.  I should make you and Bryan help when you come up rat shooting....  ;D

I'm in the same boat as Lee. The only parts I'm waiting for are from Shimano. I loaded up early on Penn parts for the charter boats. I just went thru 8 bridges with sleeves, main and pinion gears, just for one box of reels.

The Carbontex drags were still good.

Last year was 450 reels in 3 months. January thru March.

One screw at a time....

It's mostly my usual charter boat load that comes every other year.  Last year was slow.

During the winter months, there is a reel on the table every day, even if I'm working.
I'm doctoring up two 600H's for the Wife and Grandkids come April. I think they should be able to handle these.
SS Sleeves and Bryan's drag kit, spooled with 50 lb mono.
It has been in the single digits so many days, this and a beer is the only thing keeping me sane. ;)

on the list boss, right after I finish tying flies, rigging hoochies, refitting my downriggers, (which I need to pick your brain on), the dry drags on them are a total drag on me.  I gotta do something to smooth them out.

Boy am I glad I don't do salt water.  ::) Fresh water prep is much easier & less critical So, if my reels haven't been abused I can skip a year!  ;D

oops!  so you know i never work on spinning reels, right?  well, this business about one screw not making the reel go "boing!"  that does not apply to the screw on the bail return assembly.  so let's limit this to conventional reels, not spinners!!!!!!

I have a bunch of personal reels that are in need of servicing, and respooling.  These include my 2-130 lever drags, 3-12/0s,  2-14/0s, penn 12h apart on bench, TLD15, 2-9/0s, 2-6/0s, 2-4/0s, penn 9500SS, Penn 965, Newell 500, and I intend to acquire another 3 130 lever drags, and finish wrapping 3 more custom Stub 80s.  The smaller reels didn't get fished much, so I may skip them, and focus on the 100&130class reels, and rods, and tld1t,&12h, and rods.  Got parts and line for 4 reels, and 3 rods already.

Main problem is that the weather has been nice, so I have been out fishing every free chance I get.  Also, the boat work lust has grown longer over the winter, when I intended to knock it down.  I put 200hours on the boat since mid October, and this is supposed to be the off-season.  I intend to get the important reels/rods/boat stuff done by Ahi season this May.

I have been turning down reel repair jobs, but have 2 friend's 5-130 lever drags, a Penn 109, and a couple of Newell sitting on my bench now.

Guess it's good the winds are blowing again, maybe I can get to some of my projects this weekend.

That is a good thing John. ;)
I wish I could fish enough that I didn't have time to service my reels.
You are living the Dream.
My reels are serviced to the T! I still can't catch that 10 footer.
Three or four weeks out of the year is all I get, and I savor every moment. ;D

Well since we didn't fish last season I do not have my own reels to service. I'll try and get them in reel servicing condition this year however.  :-[ ;D

I got our Tiagra trolling reels done a few weeks back. It had been so long since they were done they still had the Evinrude Triple Guard grease in them. The "fingerprint" of grease inside the plates had dried out but the screws were still wet with the thick blue grease. That tells me it had been at least 3 years without service. Maybe more.

You know how it is getting your own stuff done. I'm a plumber and still have a toilet that you have to jiggle the handle  ;D

Oh yeah! I'm a retired carpenter, contractor & home builder. My wife is a mortgage loan originator and has a real estate license. She enjoys updating & loves remodeling, mostly for the resale value aspect. I came from a very conservative mentality and figure "as long as it works why mess with it, pretty ain't necessarily functionality".    :) Leads to some very interesting discussions some days, especially when a reel gets serviced while the furnace filter needs changing.  ::)  Seriously, though, shes a sweetheart and supporting of the reel fetish.  :-* Probably grateful I don't spend time at the bar or watching sports.   ;)

I have absolutely no excuse but yet I procrastinate.

Retired now so I have the time.  Currently laid up unable to go outside or do much of anything due to a bum knee.

And yet... I just have to wait until the motivation strikes.  Usually a few weeks before salmon season opens!  And then I'll be scrambling trying to get the boat serviced, rods and reels ready, tackle retied, downriggers serviced, etc-- all the things I sat on my fanny thinking about doing all winter long...

You may call it a flaw, I just call it a style.

You guys are amateurs, I am a pro at crastinating.   Things got behind the last year due to the kidney bolder problems and I do not want to face the task of catching up.  But I have started.

It really is a small world I guess. I retired in '98 the first time. The Mayor of our city asked if I would be the Building Inspector & Zoning Administrator. I turned him down because I really didn't want to go back to work & didn't think I could handle punching a time clock. I worked 80+ hours a week, Sat, Sun, etc. but if I wanted to take a day or two & go hunting or fishing I'd just do it. Well, after a couple of years I got bored. Hadn't gotten deep into the reel collecting yet back then to occupy my time. A small city 7 miles away needed a Zoning Administrator & Building Official/Inspector so I figured I could always quit if I didn't like it. I took the job & really enjoyed it for the first 10 years but it started getting political & too small townish so after 14 1/2 years when a new Mayor was elected I retired for good. Now I work on reels, do honey dos & go fishing!  ;D

When I quit commercial plumbing to do new homes with my brother the plumbing inspector would stop by for an inspection. He would give me a pocket full of inspection stickers for the other homes on the street. Needless to say we had a good reputation. OCD all the way :D

During my tenure as a ZA & BO/I, while issuing a citation, I had a gate locked behind me so I couldn't get out of the property & the guy called the sheriff & said he caught me burglarizing his property. I had no radio or phone so the 1 hour wait for the deputy was a little tense.  ;) I also had a junk yard dog (owner) tell me that the sand pit lake just north of town was 85 feet deep and there was more than one 55 gal barrel at the bottom of that lake. He also told me in front of his attorney, while doing a deposition in the State Attorney General's Office while the Assistant Attorney General was taking a break copying his bank card, that it was "time to break some heads".   ??? We ended up shutting him down, anyway, but the Mayor made me take a week off while the bulldozers cleaned up the property.  :-* The weirdest, though, and later funniest, thing that happened was when the mortuary was remodeling and I had to do an inspection while a family was making funeral arrangements. We had to use the back door so as not to disturb them. We had to go through a small chapel room and no one told me there would be a stiff in an open casket we had to walk right past.  :o I just about freaked out when I turned that corner. Couldn't get out of there fast enough!  ;D

Fell into reel repair. It is still just a hobby but it keeps me busy and no arguments with the Mrs when I buy junk.
I've always tinkered and with little money I learned to not be afraid to tear anything apart to fix it. I started servicing/repair of my own reels, then a buddies and then a guide friend of mine. Then the local repair closed up shop and now I'm it. I keep it low key as a garage full of reels needing servicing would drive me nuts. None of my reels sit around long unless I'm waiting parts. Now, my reels are different. Fresh water is kinder to me than the salt you guys see so my reels meet with a shrug most of the time and get opened maybe once every 3 years. Each time I open them I tell myself gee this guy does a good job. I could of gone another year ;D

Well I full well knew I should'nt before doing it.
But any way if you ever think about prying gears off their shaft "DONT".  With careful filing I was able to get the high speed gear back into service. However this gives me a great reason to replace the high speed gear of my Andros 12N  from a fast 6.4:1 to a more catfish friendly of 4.7:1.

Fella at Okuma said the gears couldnt be swaped.... I dont believe him. All associated parts are the same in all variations of this reel. I shall see ... Jeff
