A little while ago I had a conversation with a good friend and something about comparing the two, just, didnt seem right.
Now this is a minor issue , butt maybe not. Hence the Question Topic.
The comparison is with two modern reels from major manufacturers. Both are copied from an ad for sale. other vendors seemed to use the same data it seemed.

36/26 inches with a low gear ratio of 1:71 (26inches of line per revolution) The second one listes above.
14/40 inches with a low gear ratio of 1;81 (14 inches of line per revolution) The first one listed above.
It seems to me something here is not right? ??? ???
It would seem to me that if the one reel can pick up 40 inches of line in one revolution it has a larger spool dia and would thereby pick up certainly more line than 14 inches when the gear ratio of each is fairly close in the low gears....
I dont know the spool diameters of each reel Butt somebody here that is good with math can probubly explain it.

If I grab one of many fishing rigs I happen to have accumulated over these years and it looks like it has enough line on it and I got a hook and sinker I just take my Chances and fish it. Katy Bar The Door !
another thing i could have added is both reels (with in 20 yds) have the same advertized line capacity. (using the same test braid) I realize the diameter and width are a compomparable area here in the equasion. butt I cant explain it? ??? And maybe I didn't ask the question properly?

I think sometimes companies Hire peeps to write their advertising/and or operating instructions,capacities, and stuff and they just copy somebody's elses advertising . Like you said some of this just Don't Ad up ...lol
Sometimes companies with multiple lines of reels at different price points purposely mis-state their specs to make the more expensive reels seem to have better specs... yeah, Shimano, I'm talking about you! Saragosa vs Twinpower vs Stella... it happens all the time. They blame it on mis-typing but it happens all the time and the errors are always in favor of the more expensive reel! You have to look at the box to get the correct specs. They probably do it on the Tyrnos vs Speedmaster vs Talica vs Tiagra too. Besides, I'd take a Penn VISX or a Makaira over a Tiagra any day. The Tiagra is the oldest technology still being made and is heavy to boot.
1. As Mark noted, don't trust any specs from a retailer's website.
2. Divide the low gear ratio by he high ratio:
1.7 /3.9 = 0.436
This means that low gear will crank 0.436 inches for every inch that would have been cranked if the reel was in high gear.
If you get 36 inches per handle revolution in high gear, you will get 15.7 inches in low gear
0.436 * 36 = 15.7
