You will have to show us a picture when you get it.
Those Barrett rods are nice. You are probably talking a $600 build.

It came to $740, the wife thought I was crazy for even wanting to spend that kind of cash on a rod. She says nothing I want is cheap. I told her its because im a guy. But I figure half of what the reel cost is about right. I told her its like a nice rifle your not going to buy a $2500 hunting rifle and put a $100 walmart scope on it. I let post pics when its done. It should be done in about 4 weeks.

Yep, that's why I build my rods. A few connections and a little bit of know how and you can have the same rod for about $300.

My 80lb rod I just built cost about $180 before epoxy and thread. The most expensive part was the roller tip.

As for a rod holder for the beach, what do you guys use? I would probably hang up fishing all together if my $2000 plus package got snatched into the gulf. I usually use pvc with my penn 9500, finnor 9500, 9/0, and 12/0. I still feel that if the drag ever locked up or back spooled it would snap that pvc. I lost one reel in my life and it was a penn 5500 on ugly stick just bought it and the first cast from pier I slung the bait out into the water. Sat the rod down turned around to grab my drink and as im turning around I see her flying threw the air. It was night or I would have jumped to catch it. But I was out on the boat last year and my friend decided to climb up on the concert deck under the bridge. He sat his rod down I told him hes going to loose that rod if anything takes it. Right after I said that it took off like bullet an was gone.

I use 4ft of 2" pic. Burry it half way and pack the sand as you fill it in. It'll hold

I also use schedule 2 PVC. Cut a 10' section in two and angle the ends. Then pound in the sand with a rubber mallet.
I've fished with guys that use metal spikes with a rod holder welded to it. They are much more rigid, but sometimes you can't get them back out.

If you have to carry a lot of rod holders I build them like this (see pic). Takes up much less room! I also have a safety strap that I attach to reel.....just in case!

We use 5 foot sections of pvc buried 3 foot down. And on my Bros t
130 we use a 5 foot piece of galvanized pipe buried 3 foot down.  Either way the same and cost nothing  just go to home depot and buy a 10 or 12 ft section of pvc or pipe for 10 bucks and cut it in half of thirds but bury it deep

If your worried about losing your rod put a leash on it. I've seen people use the spiral anchors for building tie downs or bury a bucket with the leash attached. If the pvc snaps the leash should keep it from going for a swim.

We use these simple stainless clips that attach to the harness lugs on your reel--squeeze on and squeeze off.

Two years ago this setup saved my friend's gear when a powerful ulua/shark strike completely uplifted the rod-holder cemented into lava rock, pulling both rod and reel over the cliff.

The top half of his rod snapped in the process, but the Senator reel came through with only a couple deep scratches and a bent handle.

I have seen those before Chad.
The only leash I use is the harness and plate strapped to my rod when it goes off.
Once I get a bait out, I sit right next to it.
I am very serious about my Big Senators, I know what is out there. ;)

Chad, where did you get those clams/hooks from? we have really light white sandy beaches where I fish. So I figure with a 5 gallon bucket buried in the ground and a strap set up like that would put me at ease. On the pier i just use a dog leash. I was fishing on the pier one night with a buddy of mine and we where shark fishing. When about a 200lb tarpon grabbed his 12/0 it took off so fast it back lashed the reel. that reel took off in the blink of a eye. if it wasn't for the dog leash it would have been gone.We where able to get it up to the pier and released it.

I want to make a rod holder that goes into my 2" receiver hitch on my Denalli that I drive on the beach in the panhandle. I only have 9/0's but they don't need to go for a drag through the sand and surf.

Daron, you're a good man to have on those nights when everyone falls asleep--only to wake up in the morning to a reel stripped clean of line. Or worse 3/4 of the line out, and the fish pinned down..:-[  Just let me know which setup is yours, I'll set mine up close so you can watch it too..;)

I've done the 5 gallon bucket thing fishing the very few black sand beaches we have here--worked great.

As for the clips, some of them are homemade, while others were purchased from a local fishing supply store:

I believe they will ship to the mainland for a reasonable price.

I've emailed that store a few times with no reply. I just use 45kg clips for my ULUA rod.

Lowprofile, try giving them a call to place your order. They are a bit old-school..;)

If you still can't get through and want some clips, I'd be able to pick them up for you next time I'm in town.

The new rod is finished. Should be here by the end of the week. I had my daughter's name put on it. she is 2 1/2 and we were looking at shark fishing pics together. She told her mom that she is going to catch a big shark and eat it. I couldnt stop laughing.

That's a pretty rod. Surprised that you use roller guides on the beach though. With all of that sand, it would seem a bit of high maintenance to me.
Catch 'em up!

ive never had a problem with roller guides. even with cheap rods and china rollers. I do take extra care of my gear as I buy stuff wanting it to last a life time.

That's good, because many people neglect to service the rollers.  They should he taken apart, cleaned and lubed periodically.

I thought I would post a update. I wend last friday the 13th and caught 7 sharks over 4 ft and a ton under 3ft in one night in destin. Not one run on the 130 or 12/0. lost 2 on the 9/0. Had one run picked up the rod and it went dead. I reeled it in for a bait check and all I that was on their was a head from I would say a 5-6' black tip. I guess as soon as he picked up the back another shark came and bit him clean in half at the gills. I caught a few small bonnet heads and hammer pups. also couple of 5 ft black tips. but the first fish of the night was a 7ft+ hammer on the 9/0. since then ive been 7 times and have been skunked all those times. most of the time i reel in no bait left on the hooks. here are some pics from friday the 13th.

Good job!
I bet that hammer was fun on the 9/0.
