Recently scored me a 150 Surfmaster for 20 bucks. The spool is broken and the ring that goes on the pinion has come loose. Do I need a new pinion or can I roll like this without the ring? The spool has 29 155 on the side. Is this even the right spool? A 155 Baymaster is wider than this. This tiny little spring fell out too. I don't think it belongs. The spool shaft seemed like it was dragging a bit in the handle side, which is why I'm asking if this spool is correct.
Its a little rougher than my 200's, but at that price and as hard as these reels are to get, I think I did good. ;) It should clean up nice.

I'm working on the Surfmaster line up Bob. I really like these little reels and they will be perfect for Kayaking and catching bait. 100, 150, 200 and 250. ;)
Yeah, they are nice little reels. I had the 100 and 150 but sold them a couple years ago. Already did all the upgrades just didn't use them anymore. Now I wish I hadn't. In those sizes I went with Newell's. Good luck and I'll keep a watch out for those for ya.

The 29-155 spool fits the 150.
The spring is not out of a 150 and early reels did not have a hobed gear, the ring.

Already has the steel gear Ono. I'll probably just do a 5 stack with Bryan's washers and the .50 sheet from Wallace. After I took the spool out and the ring from the pinion fell out. I'm wondering if someone put that in there? You notice the spool looks like it was dropped, but not when it was in the reel.

Been there done that too many times. I hate when I drop a spool, total ruins it! :P
I think everyone has a plastic spool or two with a chip in them.

Well it had a near perfect 1 piece chrome spool... with some line left on it, so I had my girlfriend help me unspool it ::)
she got a little too playful and took off running... imitating a fish... the spool went flying outta my hands and crashed down hard on the tile floor....
Like I said.... HAD a near perfect spool :'( :'(
I did a pretty good job of keeping my cool though :'(
I had a near new plastic Green Penn 26 monofil spool that I put on a shelf while taking apart the reel, yup, rolled off the shelf and is now in several pieces. I was home alone so my wife did not hear me, but I think the neighbors did.

I often enlist me GFs help with stripping old spools too, after doing about a dozen on her own, I think she's getting the technique down.
My Son loves to do it. I miss him when he visits Grandma. ;)
I use to have a line stripper years ago. I need to get another one. it makes quick work of it.
A couple years ago I bought one of these through Melton. Goes on a empty soda/water bottle and then chucked up in your drill and away you go....

What's nice about this is that I made a box with an opening slit at the top. So when you have the line on the bottle you can reuse it on another reel. This helps with braid. Caution though. Don't put line on empty water/soda bottle to tight. It will crush it causing loops and tangles.

Not sure if that would hold 1100yds of 130 mono. I was thinking of taking an empty spool and Dremel off one side lip, attach it to an aluminum shaft, which can ride in my spooling machine cradle, and powered by a drill. Just havn't had the time to get around to playing with it. They no longer make my machine or parts for it, and I'm not quite sure how the line stripper attachments were made to work on it. Does anyone else have a Tanaguchi Spooling machine that could shed sum light on the topic? I'll get something worked out eventually.
No, it's not gonna hold 1000+ yds of 130 mono on a plastic water bottle, but it does work pretty well with the smaller reels. I'm sure, as Tom did, that there are ways around this with stuff you have at hand but I bought a couple for presents to my fishing buddies and kept one for myself. I only own 6/0's and on down so the bottles work OK for me.

I used a large empty spool. The center core is solid and I superglued a fender washer to each side. Then I used Lee's tennis balls trick to keep the spool tight and unspool my reel with 2 -3 lbs of drag onto the empty spool. This allow me to wash the braid by immersing it in clean freshwater for a couple of days and then spool back onto the reel. I am thinking of making a line stripper by cutting the side of one end of a large spool and using a 4" or larger fender washer with a nut on it. Once the lines has come off, just unscrew the nut and remove the fender washer and the pull the lines off the spool into the trashcan.

I thought 4 D Batteries was a little much. The one I had years ago was much smaller and really zipped the line off a reel.

When you purchased that reel it had the wrong spool on it. The 29-155 will work with the 200, but does not fit the 150. You will need a 29-150.

hi doug made my own with a piece of threaded rod and two inverted funnels, be creative. the line off use to have a deal, buy two get a third free, but i didn't see that anymore
doug if you do the funnel method, cut off the tapered end a bit ,so one slides over the other.

I have a Swifty Line Remover from Capt. Harry's in Fla. It goes in a 3/8" Drill like a lot of them do.

They both have 29 155, but on the opposite edge, the black one has a number 3, the red one has a number 2.
Also, do you think I really need that ring on the pinion?

150 spool Harry. I broke it open and all is pristine except for the chipped spool and ring off the pinion gear.

I just opened a 150 and a 200 Surfmaster, both having plastic spools.
Both spools are marked 155-29 on each end flange but are different overall lengths.
The numbers 2 and 3 which you refer to are mold numbers.
Frustrating, especially when you buy a boxed spool and find it does not fit.
Live and learn Tom. I have reels that the spool will fit so its not a total loss. It will fit the 155 Beachmaster and Surfmaster 200. I know a Senator from 4/0 to 16/0 like the back of my Hand. All the different smaller reels are a different story. :P A lot of conversation here is around these smaller reels. All the different combination of parts is mind boggling. I will Prevail! ;)

I'm getting my Surfmaster collection all together. I have a 100, 150, 200 and 250. I am learning as I go here and need a little wisdom on the Frames and drags, Do all the Surfmasters use the same sleeve? What about the drags, Do they all use 6-60's? If the sleeve is the same, I'm sure the drag washers are too.
Now, to the Tib's. P-20 for the 250, P-16 for the 100, P-15 for the 150 and P-10 for the 200. Correct?
The 150 seems like the hardest reel to obtain in this line up. I already bought the Tiburon frame for it, so I hope I got this right. Chowderpuff had a 150 red frame, so I jumped on it. Seems like the last piece of the puzzle to me. ;) On Tiburon's site, they list the P-10 as a fit for the Surfmaster 155L? What the ?

The 155L is a Beachmaster.
That was my point Lee. Even Gregg had the P-15 frame listing as fitting a Beachmaster 150 and Squidder 145L.
It makes it a little harder to figure out when The Manufacturer and Seller Don't clearly state what the frames fit. Sal Confirmed the P-15 is for the Surfmaster 150. That was my main concern.
I just didn't want to end up with the wrong frame.
If it fits a Squidder 145 it is the right frame.
I'm not a walking encyclopedia of Penn facts like You are Lee! ;) I'm working on it. ;D

The 100, 150 and 200 do and I think the 250 does too, all 4 use the same 5-60 main gear.
