While it would not have been my first choice if I had known what I was going to hook, My 16VSX loaded with 80 lb. braid worked flawlessly for this 277 lb. Yellowfin caught on the Excel, January 20,2019. I would drop a bait in on this reel anytime.
wow!!!!! :o
i dont think you could represent a reel any better than that.
That's awesome and one awesome reel.
I can confirm that the 16VISX would not be my first choice for a fish of this caliber, but except for some scary moments regarding line capacity, it handled my 313 pounder like a champ. With the size of the tuna regularly being caught off San Diego these days, its just about a "Don't leave the dock without it" part of the arsenal.
Those two pictures alone will sell that reel. Nicely done.
Yep...by-catch. Way to go. Tough reel. Dominick
That is some cow of a Yellowfin, those "sickles" are spectacular.
I don't think they get bigger then about 240 lb down here.
Congratulations
Out of curiosity what is the line capacity of this reel for 80# hollow core?
"Catalogue spec" is 765/80, though there will of course be substantial variation depending on line brand, installation tension, and personal preference on fill-up level.
Alan may have some specifics with a few different brands, and of course he uses LOTS of tension when winding!
.
Just a follow-up.
The 350 pound monster on the left was also caught on a 16VISX aboard the Pacifica out of Seaforth in San Diego last Thursday.
The 360 pounder on the right was caught on a 20VISX.
The "loaner" 16VISX on the Pacifica gets a lot of use, and still manages to keep on landing big ones.
A 338-pounder from yesterday, and it was the angler's very first tuna "ever".
on the spirit of adventure, october 22nd, 2020, weighed out at 96.8 pounds without guts and gills, estimated 107 pounds whole, taken on a penn torque 15 lever drag 2 speed with 30 pound fluoro in 11 minutes. yup! hook up to gaff in 11 minutes!

Wow, truly impressive. What rod were you using?
it's the 8'3" phenix black diamond hybrid 838mh blank, custom wrapped by john vadney. i had the lever pushed to full. on my reel, that is 15 pounds of drag because i ground down the cam by hand to get the drag profile i wanted. my reel gives me 9 pounds of drag at strike, 15 pounds at full and 18 pounds at sunset.

11 minutes to gaff is impressive. Did you use lower gear or high gear or both ??
I've caught some small tuna on that rod, it is a magic wand. Guess that's what happens when John and Alan put there heads together.
