Title: Daiwa open faced spinner...70’s
Post by: cdaline on May 08, 2021, 06:01:06 AM
Found this at an estate sale ... $10. Reminded me of how
well made these reels were. Circa 1970, all metal, 4:1 retrieve
ratio. Smooth accurate bail, functioning anti-reverse and
click . Strong drag. When removing the old mono found a
previous owner had bow-tied one run of line to another....
can just imagine if fisherman had a fish spool him , sadness
would prevail. I literally had to chisel out the petrified reel
grease from all the nooks and crannies. Now a smooth operator.
These reels were my first introduction to the Japan made
market... but noted Daiwa included the imprint of " engineered
and developed in the U.S.A.  ;) ... I can just imagine 14 y/o
me tying a white feather onto the 12 # test mono and fighting
a delicious Corvina into the shallows.
A nice reel.

The 7000 series is generally pretty well regarded.  Sounds like a heck of a buy.

These are great reels.

I was wondering if the "RL" stood for right-left retrieve (reversible handle)?

Frank

In the early versions, as noted in their 1969 catalog, R stood for right hand. It actually stated "R means right hand winding".  ???  RL stood for right hand - left hand. H was for high speed, " Gear ratio 4.5 to 1".
