Hello I just now became a new member...I collect vintage reels and bass lures....I live in So California and fish mostly urban lakes for bass...often with my old reels and rods
I have a question about a clicking sound when I turn the handle on my Zebco Cardinal 7...it's coming from the end of the plastic white slide as it goes round and just touches the raised nub on the winding cup ( that's what it's called in the schematic
Any suggestions how to fix this annoying problem
Thanks and I'm looking forward to checking this site out in the future

Welcome from the SoCal Inland Empire, you have come to the right place.  When it comes to Cardinals, I am sure that Fred or Tommy will be along shortly... - john

Welcome aboard, Bluesnart!

It is possible that the white plastic slide is distorted, cracked, or not setting in place properly.  Then impacts the trip nub as the rotor is rotated.

Photos would help.

Of course you know that the pinion A/R dog will make a clicking sound when the a/r switc(is pushed forward.

And also the click spring that interacts with the drag stack ratchet will also make a clicking sound when the drag is being pulled and activated.

But it sounds like your sound is coming from the white slide inside the rotor.

Tommy will know more.

Best, Fred

Thanks for your welcome and responses guys...foakes your analysis leads me to believe the problem is in the slide...I'll wait for more input...
Two more things I am in need of
1. Bale spring for a Quick 1000
2. The screw in cover for the handle's other side
Pics included

I gotta say I love the user name. I know full well the intent was "blues n art" but I laugh every time I see it, because my brain reads it as "blue snart" and I'm not sure why that's so funny to me but it is. Either way welcome aboard. I think you'll love it here.

A cap is needed on the off-handle side of that 1000 —- not a screw.

I have bail springs.  However, on these 1000/1001's, the most common reason for a bail to not snap back into retrieve position is the degeneration of the silicone bumper on the brake ring.

I have all of these parts —- and also the Cardinal 7 parts if we can determine what the issue is.

It appears that the springs may be deformed on the ends that hook over the white bail stopper. Are you sure that the bail stopper is releasing all the way? Make sure the bail stopper moves freely. Also, check the bail plate notch where the bail stopper goes into it. Sometimes the bail plate gets a small chip there that keeps the bail stopper from releasing all the way.

The only other things I can think of would be if the bearing retainer isn't tight or the spacer is missing.

Foakes
I'll follow up on the 7 (break it down and check the part)and get back to you
I'll check the bumper part (shown in your pic right)
The spring is very weak so I need one for sure
Do you have the original handle for the 1000?
Juan

DQ 1000/1001 are very valuable and capable reels.

When fully restored the6 are easily in the $150 to $250 range.

However, yours has been Jerry-rigged and used fairly hard.

Wrong crank assembly, needs springs, screws, new bail mount arm, maybe a bearing?, for sure drags, and someone stole most of the paint.

I would say, a few key small parts, and a new handle, crank and drag knob —- along with a full service and mechanical restoration —- would yield a great reel to use.

It could be repainted, and other parts replaced —- but that would push the price invested over what the value may be currently.

These reels are well worth restoring and using —- but unless mostly original and without a repaint —- they are much better as a user reel than an investment.

Best, Fred

I agree...I've been trying to figure out how to go with this little beauty..I currently use a Michelle 308 and Shimano Sonora for lite tackle fishing...but this would add to my options for small urban lake fishing...we never have enough reels right!
My hobby interest is fixing up these old reels...I really enjoy and appreciate the fine workmanship...and figuring out how to repair and maintain them...
Enough said didn't mean to go on and on
How can we best communicate regarding the min parts to get this reel up and running
Thanks Juan

You can PM me, and I would quickly send you what you need.

It would help to post a few more photos of the reel from (6) angles —- including one showing the insides with the sideplate removed.  Before ordering parts, check to make sure the main bearing is smooth and not howling.

Shouldn't take much to make this into a great "user" reel.

A new member question with little on line experience navigating this site..please be brief...
How do I get to messaging in order to send a PM
Title: Re: New Member
Post by: foakes on October 03, 2023, 09:57:30 PM
No problem, Juan —-

First off, post (6) photos (2 sides, back, front, top & bottom + one inside showing the sideplate off —- on this thread (it is much more difficult to post photos in a PM).

Then check your bearing by listening to it.

Then...click on my user name.  You will see a listing to the left that says something like "send member personal message".

Do this.

Then, you will see on the top left of the pages —- a small picture of an envelope.  When you click on this —- you can search through your Private Mail "Inbox & Outbox".

Once I recommend what parts you need —- we can get this rolling with your approval.

Best, Fred

Juan

Here is the explanation of parts needed —-

I would be glad to help you do this —- or I would do it for you.

It is really simple.

First, a complete cleaning and removing of all old grease, crud, and tarnish.

Polish and burnish all interior parts.

Reassemble —- here is a schematic.

First do the spool, then do the rotor bail assembly, then install the gearing and Anti-reverse dog parts, install the handle, install the rotor on the body, install the stop lever ring, driving plate, and spring cover, hex rotor nut next, then the spool shaft & the oscillation slide, test basic functions, install sideplate —- pop spool on —- done.

What you will have when completed will be a fully functional Microlite reel with some paint missing —- but it will catch a lot of fish easily & capably.

Best, Fred

Welcome bluesnart. Maybe it's just me, but on the Card. 7, it looks like the 2 springs are different,...length?, thickness?...
And it does kinda look like a crack in the corner.
Title: Re: New Member
Post by: foakes on October 04, 2023, 08:55:49 PM
Springs are stretched out and have been "adjusted".

Providing the bearing spacer under the rotor is seated in place properly —- all this "7" needs is likely a new plastic trip-slide, and a couple of new slide springs.

That would be my initial checks and fixes.

Good eye, Brian! When Blues' second photo is enlarged it sure looks to me like a crack. I suppose that could make the stopper weak enough to hit the trip stud, especially if the springs are weak and deformed, too.

I haven't taken it apart yet so I'm no certain of what it could be...I don't see any cracks but I'll know more when I take it apart...
Springs? Right not the bail snaps back ok...all seems ok except that clicking sound when the slide his that nub

I wasn't referring to bail springs. The return springs on the bail stopper are deformed.
