Time to start thinking about what to bring. Some of us do not have all of the rigs that we should bring and some of us have spares. I can bring a few rigs to loan out if I know what is needed. Anyone else?
I am currently planning on bringing several 25#-30#, even some spinners :D, with one 40# and one 60#, Penn, Shimano and Avet. I might bump up if BFT are a possibility.
Bringing the 2015 line-up with a few replacements:
Conventional:
1. Daiwa 30H (3+1 CF stack, 65lb braid main)
2. Daiwa 300H (3+1 CF stack, 65lb braid main)
3. Daiwa 400H (3+1 CF stack, 65lb braid main)
4. Daiwa 400H (5+1 CF stack, 80lb braid main)
5. Daiwa 600H (5+1 CF stack, 100lb braid main "just-in-case" reel);
6. Daiwa 600H (5+1 CF stack, 100lb braid main "just-in-case" reel);
7. Maroon Penn Monofil 27 (50lb braid main)
Spinners:
1. Fin Nor FST60 (40lb braid main)
2. Penn 760L (50lb braid main)
3. Fin Nor LT100 (80lb braid main)
4. Fin Nor LT100 (100lb braid main)
Conventional rods:
1. Okuma CT-T-601M
2. Okuma CT-T-601MH
3. Okuma CT-C-661MH
4. Okuma CT-T-561H
5. Okuma BG-T-601M-1
6. Daiwa VIP6455XXH
Spin rods
1. Quantum BROS70M
2. Daiwa STW70MHS
3. Tsunami TSTBS-J 701XH
4. Daiwa STJ70XHFS
Otherwise, haven't given it much thought... ;)
This is still planned as an inshore trip with a possible shot at tuna on the way down and or back right? I don't need to prepare for an offshore Tuna trip? Not that I can't take a dozen rigs or so but I was thinking 6 -8.
Hey Porthos I did not see the kitchen sink on your list. ::) Dominick
I just packed up 12 rods for my 8-day... but only 1 spinner. ;D

Lee referenced "rods" and also "rigs"; no mention of the plumbing category. But if you must know, the sink is in a large duffel bag next to the tackle and jigs boxes...
The Eclipse out of San Diego report for an overnighter 5/17:
We returned late on our overnight trip last night after sitting on a big school of big bluefin for almost 4 hours. Big blowouts left and right and off the bow, they wanted to stick. This fish looked to be in the 60 to 100 pound range until we hooked 10 of them mostly on the heavy jig down as deep as 400 ft. Two were spooled and lost quickly as the others continued to fight back hard and broke through our 60 pound setups. The bigger models had decided they were going to actually bite and stick around the boat. All but one were lost as the school disappeared. Moral of the story... have your Heavy gear ready!!
I was going to bring 3 setups for my 1.5 day trip. Now.... 6, 7?
I know this is not SOA trip but... it's relevant.
we have 5 days on the water. mike keating decides where we go. who knows, we might be bobbing around on open water for 5 days.
Looks like I will be bringing a Avet EX 4/0 and an EX 30 on 80# rods.

Now that's funny ;D ;D ;D I don't care who you are!
Joe
Yup!...good one Dominick ;D
You know, the one that caught my interest out of the bunch, was that 27 ;D
you all make me feel better.
Going on 2.5 day on Pacific Voyager with the group on Bloody Decks this weekend
And was trying to limit myself to 6 ???
20# P235-F on a 7'6" ugly stick. (spare reel in bag is my Tiburon Jigmaster my 20-25# reel)
30# Torium 20 with Dawn's new drags and handle I finished last night. Just need some locktite to finish.
I put this on an old custom wrapped eglass rod that I love.
30# Avet MXL 6/4 on a Fenwick eglass custom
40# Diawa 40H with all updated drags, lug harness and on a old GS rod 30-80# and will use for bait for BFT
40# Diawa 50H on Seeker 9ft for my Iron.
60# Diawa 600H - Bryans drags and this is going on a roller guided boat rod. CalStar XH
Was debating on the spinner; I have a nice Raw II 50 with a Shimanno rod. Probably toss in.
But trying to keep the load down.. LOL
I will toss the 600H in the bag but not take a rod with it. Just in case the 600H gets blown up by a cow BFT
Not bringing all my feathers and trolling sh$t use the boat.
Trying to keep the tackle simple too. Hooks, sinkers and 2 boxes of assorted jigs, surface, flatfalls etc etc.
Got it setup in a milkcrate with two rod holders and bungie cord.
It is hard to leave a rig at home! LOL
I have 3 4/0's not making the cut. My old standby 4/0 is staying at home. To me.. the Torium and Avet can handle 30-40#
and if I need 50-60# The diawa 400H is a tougher reel and better drag with Bryans 7+1.. I have well over 20#'s of drag
and dont want much more.
IF the fish get that big.. I want something with a harness and lugs.. My uncle calls it cheating.. By back calls it smart!
I just hope we have half as good of fishing as we had a few weeks ago. We caught that wide open YT on the lower finger
and I hooked 12 and landed 11 for the day. Doesn't get better than that. And best part is 9 of the 11 were on jigs ;D
That is the best fishing.. a YT on a jig is the best
I wish I could justify an Avet HX 2 speed or even an Shimano TLD 30 II.
Would much rater fish those for the BFT.. than the 600H single.. but I think I will manage!
I was on the Pac Voyager three weeks ago for a 1 1/2 YT trip and I'm on the Pac Voyager next weekend for a 2 1/2 day. This is the 3rd year in a row for me on both these trips. I'm thinking rigs with 25-30-40-40-50 plus a spinner for poppers/stick baits and either a Lexa 400 or TranX for Megabaits. One of my 40#'ers has an Accurate Valiant 300 for Flat Falls. Every reel has spectra with a top shot or leader of mono.
I'm so confused ;D Luckily Mark and my friend Patrick from Fisherman's Warehouse are loaning 2 Avet HX 5/2's..I may pick up an extra rod?

see you in a week, mark and todd.
I am bringing 3 black hole rods ( a slow pitch and 2 challenger banks), a roller guide rig with avet ex 4/0-2, and a pro-challenger 450 gm jigging rod paired with the omoto triple. The slow pitch blackhole will have my baja special, while the 2 challenger banks will have a talica 16 and tranx HG. I might breakdown and bring the Lethal 100 again for it to sit in the rod rack again like last time.

Don't do that. I yoyo-ed with my LT100's and was landing YT, even on the one that had the snapped handle bolt. ;D
Can you really get 45lb of drag out of a Lethal 100?

I've dialed incrementally up and measured with a spring scale. It was not buttoned down at 32lbs. No inclination to go beyond.
Nice!
Todd, you want me to bring a JX or HX Raptor with 50# for you to use? I have a TLD20II with 50# and a TLD30II with 60# too. All backed by spectra.

G 6470H?
The G6470H might fit the bill for 40-50 although I think of it as more of a 50# rod. I have a custom Seeker cjb65h that is solid for 40-50# bait and yoyo. It's actually 6'7". It's basically a composite 865xh. I had an 865xh that I sold and Randy Penny recommended this to replace it.

That would be awesome. The HX or either of the TLDS would be perfect.
The only thing missing in my arsenal is a bigger 2 speed.
I want something with LUGS if the fish get that bid. I have my Diawa 400H ready.. but it is not 2 speed.
I've got a rod for it Custom wrapped G.S. 660 XH

Hi Mark
What type of 80# braid is on your HX Raptor? I use Seaguar Threadlock, and only get ~450yds of 80#. I then run ~25-50ft of 60-100# mono topshot.
All of you are making me jealous! I wanna go with you! Oh well, maybe next time.

You guys crack me up, four rods should all you need. A 20 lbs setup for a picky bite, 25-30 for the stuff most likely you will see, a 40 lb setup and that's pushing it early on in the season and maybe some trolling gear 50 to 60 lb gear.
I say bring all the gear you want, but most people will not fish it, unless they don't have the stuff needed.
Lets look at the past for many years. June Albacore, its been like for ever since we have seen these. The BFT have already started to change to YFT but that's not a bad thing .
The people that bring more gear than they use are are either are trying to loan it out so they look cool, or don't know how to fish what they have got. Step away from these people.
Fish what you brought, slay those fish and laugh at the guy trying to hand you gear he cant fish.

I brought extra rods in 2014 and the extra were loaned out, not to look cool but to help those that did not have the gear. The same for several other generous people on the 2014 trip. If it wasn't for my rods Jimmer would not have done so well and I do know how to fish my gear, I was fishing 25# and only lost 1 fish...to a sealion. WTH is your problem? I like to use different rods just because I can, like the Phoenix Megladon I got for albacore up here but should work for YT.
Here's me not knowing how to fish my SDS, FYI, one of 5 cows.

Lee,
Take the high road--do not succumb to the Dark Side. Focus only on the trolling that's done from the stern of a boat.
You know that they say, I'd rather be lucky than good and luck is where preparation meets opportunity!
I never grow tired of those pictures Lee. Love the one of the wahoo stacked like cord wood in the snow. Reminds me of growing up.
I grew up a troller, but a good fishermen should have plenty of tools, and techniques in his arsenal. Every kind of fishing requires some degree of flexibility if you want to stay productive.
Thanks Mark
Do you know if hollow spectra is "typically" thicker than the corresponding solid, or is it more of manufacturer to manufacturer variation?

Then again sometimes you have to stick with what you know works until it produces results.
To me fighting technique requires smoothness, and using the tools to your best advantage. IMHO, a proficient standup angler with properly match/fitted gear has better reaction, smoother movements, and can maintain a mechanical advantage over the fish.
However, shotgun or rail rod needs to be built differently, in order to perform the actions needed. Hard to argue against the fact that it requires no energy to hold a rod that is still mounted in a shotgun holder, and the fact that rail fishing conserves angler energy. Using the boat to control a fish can in many cases actually be more important then the anglers role in some instances. In others, it is not an option.
I think there is a time and a place to try difrerent methods.
Just a few thoughts..
John
Bingo! If I could not adapt I would have wasted the trip due to the broken hand. One of my 60# rods is set up for iron and I want to try it on BFT. I would rather head straight down and target YT but it will be what it is.
One tip, do not fish with a broken hand, it never healed right.

By the way, I got the reel, it is PERFECT. I'll do photos and all that next month when life on the boat slow's down. Hoping to hook up to a GT with it on North Shore in June.

I'm glad the old reel is going to get used again, I don't think the person that gave it to me ever had it near saltwater.
You guys crack me up! All you need is a 30# rental rod with a broken rod clamp and a handle that keeps falling off, to catch fish 90 percent of the time. If someone tries to loan you their gear, they're just messing with you, probably the line is cut 150 yards in. Back away slowly and avoid these people at all costs!

We all have to be a little thick skinned around here anyways. Intended or not, it's sometimes easy to take things the wrong way, intended or not. We might be fishing with y'all next year anyway, but this year, like last year you get 10 spots in the rack for your rods, any more and they're stored forward of everyone else. If you guess wrong or have a couple of failures, you could be left scrambling, unless of course you're the Southern California angler, in which you should come out and spread your wisdom with all of us. Sure, some of my rods just go for a boat ride, but it's better to have it and not need it, than to not have it. If you're really dialed in you may need less but most of us aren't Southern California anglers, so we prepare for what if. I've always been a minimalist when it comes to gear, and I'll be honest, I've been burned a few times thinking I knew what to expect. Put your money where your mouth is and come on out next year, we're probably friends, we just don't know it yet.
Warren
I've found that there are no strangers on fishing boats, just friends I haven't met yet.
I tend to be a maximist rather than a minimalist yet often find that there's something I need but didn't bring.
You can borrow mine..... ;D
Will anyone other than me have a 1:1 gear ratio?
I am bring a couple of fly rods along with me.
I have a few conventional rods too.
I have a 1.3:1/1:1 Penn 50SW but it is staying home.
We fished down by Colonet last weekend. The high spot where they get YT is 113 miles south of San Diego. We got BFT a few miles north of there. 1 1/2 day boats can fish there. They were also getting big 50-80# BFT 30 miles west of San Diego last weekend on private boats. http://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/threads/5-29-offshore-report-stupid-bft-bite.627204/

9. 80# Shimano Saragosa 10000sw / Black Hole Challenger Bank s-801h (poppers/surface iron)
Extra reels: Fathom 12, Shimano Calcutta TE300, Daiwa Lexa 300, Avet HX Raptor, Penn Battle 6000.
I'm hoping the 25# is only used for making bait! I'll probably bump the TranX up to 60 or 80# for poppers if we're going for BFT.
My crew checking out the reels. Plus the rods. I don't know what's up with the pictures being rotated or how to correct it. They do look correct if I click on them to see them full size.

Will anyone other than me have a 1:1 gear ratio?
I am bring a couple of fly rods along with me.
I have a few conventional rods too.
;D ;D ;D A couple years ago I brought an Ol' Skool Daiwa SLT 20 on a 7' Harnell full roller custom ;D Damn if it didn't catch near the most fish on the troll. Must have been the harmonics of those old style stuart roller guides sending a vibration thu the line to the fish...Killa ;D

I ditched the 80# and added a 15# and some small jigs to play with bait I have fun with maks. I usually use a 40# rod for making bait.
Here's what Justin and I are planning:
Standard Jig/Bait
1. 25# Shimano Trinidad (gold) / Cousins CJB 70L & Shimano Terez 80M (live bait)
2. 30# Shimano TOR16HG & Daiwa Lexa 400 / Cousins CJB 75ML & 70ML (live bait)
3. 40# Shimano TOR30HG / Cousins CJB 70M (live bait)
4. 40-50# AVET JX Raptor & Penn Fathom 25NLD2 / Cousins 70MH & 65M (yoyo/bait/dropper loop)
5. 50# AVET JX Raptor / Shimano Terez 66H (dropper loop)
Specialized
5. 40# Shimano TOR16 / Shimano Teramar 80H (surface iron)
6 50# Daiwa Lexa 400 / Phenix Abyss PSX809 (surface iron)
7. Two Bass Rods w/ Shimano Curado 300DSV Reels (plastics, laser minnows)
I got 8 spots on the rail...I had to sell off all big stuff 2 years ago for the IRS but did manage to get collecting again. Will be slightly under gunned but will catch some fish.
Rods N Reels
#1: very old skool Seeker S870-7' 15-40 with my 500 all pimped out with #30 top over #65 braid

Hey Warren...you all delrin-ed up? :D
I'm torn. My backups are so nice I hate to leave them behind. Super tuned with all the upgrades just sitting there unused. So this year I'm fishing with my backup reels. Not good enough to be top dog, but worthy nonetheless. They need some exercise.
Wai, I don't fish my reels hard enough to need whatever that stuff is. Is that the stuff carbon fiber is glued onto? If it is, then I'm using it. Slowly converting to the dark side. May, or may not be in some of the reels shown off on this years trip. Yup, one to fish with and seven to show off my reel customizing skills.

Nothing wrong with going to the old school backups...just joshing ya about the delrin. After rebuilding two spinners, I got too lazy to reopen my Sealines to ensure all were upgraded with delrin for the undergear and one on the top washer. The installed CF's will have to do. :P
