Title: Jigmaster 500 upgrades
Post by: Shark Hunter on September 03, 2014, 05:00:20 AM
I knew I forgot something. The yokes. I have my Jigmaster project all lined out now except for those.
I got the gears today Alan. Thank You. Two 5 to 1 Jigmaster sets and two more Hex gears. I read that the sleeve doesn't fit the fine thread sleeve. Fits mine ok. ;D
Nevermind. ::) I got he ss jacks and yokes when I ordered the bridges. It sucks getting old. :D
The first Donor. An older 500 with Newell spool and bearings. 30 Bucks! Notice the backward eccentric. Easy Money! ;)
Alright Guys, I'm new to the Jigmaster. I have several of them, just getting to doing something to make them better. I have all the parts to trick out two reels except for the frames and the drags. I pretty much know my way around any Senator or Surfmaster. Time to go to School again. ;)

Shark Hunter,
There is only one way not to get old. I'd rather get old.
The two best times to go fishing is when its raining and when its not!!!
Make those reels and have some fun.

Growing up is optional. Growing old isn't :D

Mr. Shark, Jigmasters are an absolute blast to own, mod and fish. With your experience building those Penn monsters you'll have no difficulties whatsoever mastering the 500... and, as is your wont, collecting a few dozen or so.   :D

So funny to see the Crown Royal bag, all of the grandfather and fathers reels are stored in them.  I found literally dozens of them in drawers all over the house.  I too am on a Jigmaster quest, and all of my parts should be here in the next few days.  I'll post pics...only thing I'm waiting on doing is beefing up the gears, maybe in the Spring.  Looking forward to following your build!

This is only showing the old parts, just your main gear is the only thing showing as new. I have the new spacer.

garking84 just informed me that he is very happy with my Jigmaster 5:1 gear set kit. He went fishing with it, and it worked out very well for him.

It will be great if more members can report more info on using the kit.

Thanks all,

Alan

I'm still trying to source some thin washers for a 5 stack. I have a Tib frame on the way. I'm going fishing in Florida in two weeks. If I can't find any, I'll just use the regular three stack and report back.

Can you post a pic of all the new parts when you get a chance?

Daron,

Don't forget that those Jigmaster kits you purchased were custom main gear (not standard).

Thanks,

Yes,
The stock three stack fits flush. I plan on using delrin on top. Here you go Al. Everything in the pic is from Black Pearl, except for the sleeve, star and drags. Double dog bridge kit with ss jack and yoke. Custom 5:1 Jigmaster gears with custom spacer.

No he didn't Mike, its the one all the way on the left with a larger ID than needed ::), but I'm going to make him slide ;D.

I see 3 SS washers - 3 HT 100 washers & 1 Delrin washer. If that's the bottom one then where is the top one.

top or bottom that ID is still too wide on that delrin ;D

Dawn has the .5mm Carbontex washers. I will see how many of Bryan's metal sets I have. I have the .5 drag washers also if Dawn is out.

I'm doing one myself. Just waiting on the new gear sets.

Ok,
Lets slap this Jigmaster together.

Since someone questioned my Delrin cutting capabilities. I redid these with a tight ID.

Business end almost done.

Prepping the frame. I notice the clamp studs are one piece instead of threading a nut to fit on the stud. I like it. Greased and ready.

Done, 5:1 Jigmaster with Tib Frame.

Not criticizing bud, just helping out... for what its worth, if you rather have that washer loser, go for it. ;)
Good job on that reel, now tell me how she feels with a delrin on top and bottom, do you feel the difference in smoothness compared to the others without?

Daron

For the handle side Flat Head Screws - Did you use Penn Screws or SS from McMaster.

McMaster Screws stick up slightly.

You built a very nice Jigmaster, Daron, and I see that you have a few more laying on the table to practice on. ;)

I didn't even realize the ID was that big until you pointed it out. I was concentrating on the OD too much.
I found that I could plunge straight in with my Dremel to keep the ID from getting out of hand. That washer moving around will only lead to trouble. Yes, the drag and star is smoother for sure.

Just the stock screws Mike.

Daron, that's why I mentioned it. A little shifting of that washer and it could have interfered with the dogs.

Mike, I do use stainless steel screws from McMasters, yes they do stick up, but very little. On some older rings they might make it a little tight, but still work. I couldn't find a smaller one.

Then I guess that I have an older ring. I've had this problem before & know what to do. Do I want to spend the money for 6 Penn Screws OR spend the time grinding the heads??

I used Newell Bars & Reel Seat on this Jig Master with a Red Penn Spool

I an a little confused on the stock or custom gear set . What is the difference in the gears and can you use a stock drag set up in the custom gear set ?

The custom Gear is a little deeper. I have a stock 3 stack in mine and it fits fine.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I just ordered a custom set and will use the 3 stack on it and maybe later on I will go to a 5 stack.  My 501 is used mainly in the bays here on Long Island for fluke and sea bass.

I would, screw them in a post and run them on a belt sander.
Rubbing them on a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface will also work and gives you the exercise needed for the day ;). I'm not crazy about stock screws, the slot is just too shallow. Mine are Phillips head stainless steel.

Colt

The 501 can be used for Blues & Stripers as well. I have used this size reel for Cod & Blacks. We are not far apart.  I'm in Queens L.I.

I follow a lot of Sal's work Dwight, but a Bucket of Bricks is not one of them. ;)

Daron, I'm not the only one using the bucket, a few friends use it as well to test their drags.
You could use 8 bricks, fill it with water, chocolate syrup, fried chicken, whatever float your boat ;) ;D
I'm betting they will all weight the same around 40lbs +-, well except for the chicken ;)

I'm thinking Belt Sander or Wife -- Belt Sander or Wife. This is a tough question we live in a 2 Bedroom Apartment. I can't post the answer she might read it.

I have four 500's and two 505's with the same screws Alto Mare is talking about. They assemble and function fine.  I did run the flat over a stone to make sure there were not any burrs.  I use them because I can use a much stronger and longer screw.

I use a Dremel, coarse sharpening stone and some cutting oil to reshape the SS screws I use.  It might take a bit longer but I like the results.  I bought a selection of SS screws and use the longest that will fit except in the stand (don't want those sticking out too much).
