Make sure that I am stacking the drag washers correctly. This reel came with the four beveled washers and a thrust (flat) washer. I stacked them from bearing to pinion - thrust washer then the beveled washers as follows |()().

I have done it this way before and have not had any issues until now. I pull the lever back to free spool, with the drag knob turned all the way back, it free spools fine. As I move it forward to strike, the drag gets tighter more than it should with the drag back completely off. Am I missing something here. This is the first time that this has happened.

I just bought on ebay a 700B in very poor condition ,this is the first Dam Quick Champion I get . After complete tear down ,clean it up and straight up the handle the reel back to service .It does have the clutch lock as you said ,at first I thought it's a flipping switch but it is not ,it just allow line come out when push in . Over all the reel built better  than Ambassadeur but a litter heavier .Have not try to cast with it

My son just gave me a Kastking Zyphyr bait casting reel ,It's a very light reel under 5 oz .I don't think it can handle 3 lbs bass but it's OK for crappie , I like to use bait casting to use jigs under float

Maybe the knob on Steve's 8300 comes from a different reel or or an older or newer version of the 8300.

I just finished going through a Daiwa 8300 that I bought from Fred and it has the same drag stack that is in your picture. Earred washer on the bottom then teflon washer then keyed washer. I replaced the teflon washer with a Long Beach 6-60 HT100 with Cal's. Not for more drag but for smoothness sake.

The label on the center of the knob on mine says "Spring Loaded Drag" but otherwise looks identical to yours. Maybe a little smaller

Thanks for the info.
