Title: My Penn 113h (cf again)project
Post by: Marcq on May 04, 2016, 06:28:18 PM
Like I said previously, I like carbon fiber so much that this time I'm doing a 113h but with the reel stand too

The subject
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/penn%20113h_zps8ox7hjz8.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/penn%20113h_zps8ox7hjz8.jpg.html)

This one will go a lot faster to do since I now know what I'm doing  :)

Beside the space bar, post, harness lug I will also do the reel stand and a handle knob

Again the post will act as the inserts. This time instead of being fully carbon fiber, I will use composite material which is glass and carbon
Made my own
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160504_110218_zpsf3vksd0p.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160504_110218_zpsf3vksd0p.jpg.html)

Works really well but as the tendency of forming air pockets so it as to be compress, its a must
As you can see on the pic I'm using wax paper instead of a release agent
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160412_112139_zps2mpfikcx.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160412_112139_zps2mpfikcx.jpg.html)

The space bar, the process now is starting with carbon fiber from the inside, fill with composite material, compress it, clean it
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160503_184147_zpslmipkqlr.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160503_184147_zpslmipkqlr.jpg.html)
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160503_183555_zpsyhlwf2bi.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160503_183555_zpsyhlwf2bi.jpg.html)
Reel stand, same as above except the middle post was cut leaving 3/8 on each side as inserts so I can drill hole in the center for the clamp
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160504_102909_zps6odxljxs.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160504_102909_zps6odxljxs.jpg.html)

Checking for the right curvature and enough space for the carbon fiber
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160504_103414_zpszberlbam.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160504_103414_zpszberlbam.jpg.html)

To be continued.. And hope I'm not boring you

Marc..

Not at all!  It's really cool what you are doing with these.  Just wondering, have you thought of combining the two spacer bars with the base to make a 1-piece frame?

I'd really like to try this myself at some point.  Any tips you want to share would be most appreciated.

On my next project, on a squidder but want to see if the composite material I'm using is strong enough, it should, everything tied up together makes it strong. Could actually do it on this 113, but eliminating the post, keeping small inserts would be better

There's some fabrication stuff I left out, didn't think it was the best way to do thing, I'm learning on the process. But if you guys have any particular question don't hesitate
Thanks

I wonder if a small vacuumed packer (like a food saver) could provide enough vacuum to pull any air pockets out during the curing stage?  Just a thought.  I once looked at getting set up to make composit wings for high end remote control airplanes.  I bet these 'kit' airplane guys could provide some valuable pointers.  I myself have no experience working with this stuff, but find it fascinating none-the-less.  Keep it coming!

Small parts like this could be handled in a chamber vac easily.

Thought about a vacuum but I would need a perfect mold, and you can only have that when the part is finished and tested and made into a mold, that's a long process, the reel is my mold, and trying to keep waste to a minimum and plus I don't need much tooling
That's basically what you need
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160504_133052_zpsj5mom24q.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160504_133052_zpsj5mom24q.jpg.html)

Yeah those airplane guys  :D :D I made with a friend of mine that was in the aircraft industry at that time(1987) a F16 from a kit, six feet long, we added retractable landing gear but it added to much weight and crashed two times, like in the movies :D :D, first time I used epoxy

Now I have this urge to do the side plate too, like a caged 113h  8)

Great stuff Marcq!

Could you use an Accurate or Tib frame to shape a mold?

Thanks.

Yes you could, but would need special tooling for the insert. Actually you cant , to many sharp corners and you cant really inject it

Right.. why stop there... sideplates.. full frame.. handle arm... now that would be sweet.  Quite honestly I am surprised no major reel manufacturer has ventured into the realm of composites, and ceramics... these materials hold promise IMHO.

Probably cost, graphite is cheaper but the look is boring. I would not be surprise if reel manufacturer eventually explore that route, carbon fiber is becoming affordable

I think the spacer bars would be cool on any reel. It would make a post reel much stronger. You might be in production one day ;D

Only kidding, still just an exiting hobby

Would be cool to create your own reel  8)

many custom builders here.

CF custom parts are always eye catching

on a 113h I would prefer a half frame made of CF than the current aluminiun Tib frames, just for the look

Continuing..

Nothing goes to waste, will be using making parts inside the reel, like standoff
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160525_160229_zps3shxjosw.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160525_160229_zps3shxjosw.jpg.html)

Not quite thick enough, maybe two layers of carbon on the ring so the spool goes inside a bit more. I'm not using a adjustment type bearing
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160526_153831_zpsjwnhladw.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160526_153831_zpsjwnhladw.jpg.html)

Notice how loose the bearing is in the plate, it's for a purpose, not having precision tool, I needed a way to adjust the spool center, with the small plate on the right, it fits the bearing perfect, I will be able to achieve that and  it will be glued to the plate at the end

(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160526_152753_zpsbhbnykuw.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160526_152753_zpsbhbnykuw.jpg.html)
I might change the shape of the plates, probably no sharp corners
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/20160526_152651_zpshdexzokp.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/20160526_152651_zpshdexzokp.jpg.html)

Very interesting.  Dumb question....isn't carbon fibre brittle if it twists?  Prone to lateral cracks?

I have no idea.

But I sure think it looks nice.

Without the resin/epoxy it's not brittle but with resin with a thickness of 0.023(a credit card is 0.031), it will break quite easy because of its rigidness. You need a very good pair of scissors to cut the fabric, easier with the resin in it

I like it because of the lightness of it, the non handle side CF plate is so far  less then half the weight of the original Penn plate with the rings

I'm a noob at it, did a lot a fiber glass on boats but this is a first for me

Thanks
Marc..

Keep it coming Marq. Have started on a rod clamp inspired by what you're doing here. Have laid up a polyester/fibreglass core slab, and machined back on the mini-lathe. Will then wrap the finished piece with carbon fibre and epoxy. Will post it up on the 500 thread what I have done so far. Won't get it completed until next time home, off to work Monday.

Great to see this one up and running again. Keep it coming Marcq.
Have a Torium handle conversion inspired from this thread, that I was going to share, but after the recent debacle with Photobucket, don't know if I can be bothered. Especially now some of my other threads are practically useless, and I just don't have the time or know-how to shift the photo-hosting and update the links.
But please keep this one alive.

This thread had slipped off of my radar, good to see you working on it again Marc - it's inspiring stuff. I'm looking forward to further developments.

Marc,

Once you are done, could you try a 3/0 handle side plate that is designed to fit a jigmaster bridge??? This way we could put a black pearl double dog bridge into a 3/0 with no grinding.....

This could be the next leap right here...
