Title: California Nevada River Forecast Center
Post by: Bill B on January 06, 2017, 06:04:33 PM
Below is a link to the California Nevada River Forecast Center, published by NOAA.  I find this very useful for me, to track projected river levels as my trailer parked on the Sacramento River is subject to flooding during high rain and snow run off....Bill

What is the level of Folsom Lake?  It sounds like a bunch of snow is going to melt.

Folsom is the last tiny link in the chain really. It can't stop anything close to what these storms can put out. Currently they are scheduled to release 30,000 CFS continuously starting today and the big rain is beginning tonight and tomorrow.

This storm event is scheduled to last from last night -- through at least some rain and snow each day, through the next 7 days -- then the graph forecast stops on Dark Skies & NOAA.

We have a reservoir below us about 30 miles called Millerton Lake, on the San Joaquin River.

The Dam is called Friant -- and they started releasing water down river a couple of days ago in anticipation of this storm.

http://www.fresnobee.com/news/local/article124686554.html

At our elevation of 4400' in the Central Sierras -- we have received 2.75" since 4:30 this morning.

There is 100% chance of precipitation through Monday PM -- at this pace -- then more rain and possibly snow all week.

Yosemite was also closed and evacuated.

Best,

Fred

We are on the northern edge of this storm.  It went from-10° and hard snow this morning to 37° high wind and rain right now.  The roads are covered with 8" of packed, I will not be driving for a few days.

How come it all's gotta come at once? Seems like its been doin that since the late 70's and got worse in the 80's when I lived in Nor-cal. Worked at a steelhead/salmon hatchery, and in Feb. '85, after one a those type a storms, got to shovel tons a mud outta the raceways and we lost thousands a eggs(hint: use spring water, piped from underground, never creek/river sources). Not to mention giant destructive fires in the summer/fall. Don't seem like I remember that kinda stuff from when I's a kid in the Bay Area. Mabey one upside: plenty a water for the steelhead/coho runs this winter.

We haven't heard from Bill -- I hope he got his trailer pulled up and away from the river.

Just saw a report saying that this is the biggest storm to hit California and Oregon in 10 years.

Could be larger than the one in '96.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort on the Eastern side of the Sierras could get 20' of snow by the time this multiple system or storms rolls through all of next week.

Everyone please be careful -- and don't travel unless you need to.

Best,

Fred

We are on the northern edge of this front and it is not nearly as bad as the predicted hit California is getting but I can not drive on the road, packed snow with standing water on it, and lots of water in the fields and on the roads.  I will be worrying about our centeral CA family and am having flashbacks of the '64 flood.

Sacramento River update.  It is supposed to crest at 30' by Thursday.  We have been given the notice here at the RV park to move to higher ground.  River has already flooded the lower camp ground and 6' until the upper starts taking water over the berm.   Already moved myself and three others......Bill
Title: Re: California Nevada River Forecast Center
Post by: Bill B on January 08, 2017, 05:56:07 PM
Bill checking in.....We were "advised" yesterday to move to higher ground......our lower camp ground flooded last night and is under 3' water right now.  We moved 5 trailers to higher ground here in the camp ground and had to hire a tow service for three 5th wheel trailer, why someone would buy a 5th wheel trailer with no truck to pull it is beyond me.....river at I st bridge is 25' and we are expected to peak at 30',  I am currently about 6' above the current river level....gonna be close.  What worries me is I have to go to southern Cal this week, so I have someone here that will be watching for me and pull my trailer higher if needed.

As of two days ago Folsom Lake was at 43% of capacity and they were dumping a lot of water and Nimbus Dam was dumping also.   I will post a few pictures of our park in a little while.

Bill, I figured you all were busy getting to higher ground. The river gets high very quickly in your area, what with the constant rain, and water releases. Glad you're OK. Many people here who live on River Road (80 ft above sea level) had to sandbag late last night. I was out till midnight helping fill sandbags at city hall. So far, no real flooding but the water is coming down the river along with the rain. Just a matter if time before river front properties are flooding.

it's coming down pretty hard right now, most of it moving sideways with the winds.  going to hunker down in my garage, get some bills done, go through the mail and catch up on some computer work.  joy was looking around the kitchen for things for me to do, so i'm staying in the garage as long as i can.   :-\

This is the Sherwood Harbor Marina and RV Park, it normally sits 20' above the river, it will be floating on it's pontoons before we are done.

This is looking down river from the store deck....there is usually 8' of river from the dock to the river bank, my redneck condo was located to the right of the tree....looks like about 5' until we over flow.....

Again looking down river, showing both the inner and outer docks, those pilings are normally 35', at the top, above the river, looking like about 10' now
(http://i.imgur.com/fI63yIO.jpg)

Looking up river now. The barge you see has grounded in really dry years, and normally 3' between the dock and river bank.....At the top of the picture you can just see where the river has over flowed the berm and flooded the lower camp ground
(http://i.imgur.com/uCRonUY.jpg)

Todd thank you for the offer, I might need a place to store the trailer before this is all over....

Lower camp ground under 4' of water, but the geese love it, lots of good stuff to eat floating up now, I do not think we will be using that area anytime soon.....

Hi Bill --

Not sure of your situation --  however, maybe hauling your trailer over to the local Wal-Mart for a week, or so while you are gone, or even while you are here -- might not be a bad idea?

They have security, 24/7 lighted parking, plus this is free at a majority of Wal-Marts, nationwide.

Appreciate the reports -- we have had 7.5" of rain with a little hail in the last 48 hours -- predicted to continue through possibly Thursday -- easing off over the weekend -- then a possible continuation next mid-week.

No issues here, so far -- just prayers to all of our Ohana here on the West Coast.

Best,

Fred

Thanks guys, WalMart is my ace in the hole if/when it comes to that.  We also have a Target less than a mile from me we may set up in.  Good to hear the Yolo is being opened.  I still fear for my two neighbors with 5th wheelers and no trucks......I'm beginning to take this as a West Coast version of the Louisiana Hurricane Party  :D.  What is gonna be funny is if the river gets high enough to flood the parking lot here, there are five people living in their boats that will not be able to get off their boats  :o and stuck in the middle of the river.

As an old captain I used to work for would says.."It's not gonna be very productive, but It sure is gonna be interesting".......Stay turned my brothers......Bill

Bill- Be careful as I know you are. Power was out here wee hrs in the am. 2am to be exact it came down hard. Have to chargers for my phone so we're good so far. Having to prep meals way in advacne is tough. Power however does go out easily here.

Let me know what you need posted, send em' on over. Keep in touch and let us know you're ok. You too, Todd. I'm on higher ground, so the most I might lose is power. Losing power is a distinct possibility for me as the high wind advisory will mess with the power lines between here and Fairfield/Suisun. Good news is that I have a small UPS so I can at least have one light and charge my phone.

Still here guys....moved the last two trailers out today  :-X  one old timer stated he had no trailer pulling skills so I pulled him out of 6" mud....why do they wait till the last minute I will never know.....but we are high and dry so far....new river forecast shows us peaking tomorrow afternoon, Im pretty sure we will be safe here.....gonna take tomorrow off from work to check up on everyone here.

The store is free floating now.  The dock you see on the left is normally 20' below the railing on the right
(http://i.imgur.com/6DyWdy8.jpg)

This view is from the dock looking towards the campground, the grey Ford in the background is my truck and my redneck condo used to be in front right where the waters edge is now
(http://i.imgur.com/jBkLyWI.jpg)

The lower campground is full......of water   :D
(http://i.imgur.com/KjJcgeW.jpg)

Still have power at 635pm, propane tanks are full, and batteries fully charged.   May continue this Hurricane Party on my buddies boat....The last flood weir was opened today and flooding the Yolo Bypass now which will keep us at the 30' level here and take a lot of pressure off those downstream.  Spoke to someone this afternoon who used to work for the water resources in West Sacramento.  He is concerned with the levee just below me at Davis Road which has been neglected for many years.  Rodents have burrowed into and through the levee......so anyone below Davis Road please be concerned.  The fire dept, police, NOAA and others have been patrolling the levee, obviously worried about something.

And a sincere thank you to all, especially Ralph and Todd for standing by.....True Brothers.......Be safe all....Bill

It rained in my area for 14 hrs continuously, sometimes very heavy for as long as an hour. River Rd. down on the levee between town and the ferry is flooding 1-3 ft with the incoming tide and receding with the outgoing tide. I have no pics, stayed inside yesterday. But I'm OK, and so are my neighbors. it stopped for now.The folks on River Rd are glad we filled sandbags for them over the weekend.

Glad to hear you're back to normal Bill. Maybe you could steer a few rain storms Santa Barbara way. Even with the rain we've received Lake Cachuma, our primary water source, is at 9% capacity. 75 here yesterday, 50 at 5am this morning, I guess there is an upside.
Super Bowl looks like it will be a good one.

Here we go again.....Sacramento River rose 3' in less than 15 hours, NOAA revised the river forecast and we immediately saw the results.  Moved the trailers again last night and woke up to half of my old spot underwater......Im on higher ground now (same safe spot as last time).  Unfortunately one trailer, a 5th wheel, didnt get the memo, and is gonna be underwater.  I safely moved three trailers in about 30 minutes, but couldnt help the 5th wheelers.  Two were able to secure a tow this am, but the one unfortunate wheeler is gonna be left out because it's too mushy and unsafe to get him out.....have not heard from Ralph and Ted, but will text them to check their status.......Bill
