Well, the only other one i have seen belongs to Dom. Its kinda goofy looking. The brim is huge. It looks like something i would have worn as a kid skateboarding or BMX biking in the 80's LOL
Thanks!

Chris,  I believe they're from the 40's.  Ted had a nice one he sold to a member on AT also.
Those hats aren't too easy to find in the condition yours is in nor the one Ted sold.  Mine is a beater, but I still love it.
Nice buy Chris,
Dom

Chris, it's from Saltwater Fishing Tackle by Harlan Major.  First edition in 1939, revised in 1948 and revised again in 1955.  My copy is 1955 and I don't know the date of the photo or if it appeared in earlier editions.  The book was discussed in another thread here somewhere.

Notice his reel is not a Penn,  The absence of light tackle baitcasters in the Penn line-up has always been an issue.

You know you had a Bert's Surf Shop painters hat and a Hawaiian Tropic tee with Birdwell's. And checkerboard Vans or shell toe Adidas.

Just for dating purposes, the photo of the "riviera" theatre has a 63 or 64 impala in it, so pic has to be after that

Also, the 1941 penn catalog on scott's bait and tackle site shows a fisherman wearing that same hat. I stumbled upon that while trying to figure out what year penn first made the model 15 that I just bought.. (1941)

Pretty sure one of our local tackle shops has one of these.  They do come up on EBay from time-to-time (maybe 4Xs in 4 years?).

Hi Dave.  The photo was taken a long time before the levelmatics came out.  Also, the levelmatics are way larger than the old 60 yard to 100 yard size baitcasters.  There were probably a few years there in the 1970's when Penn was close to having a small reel but then Lew's, Shimano and Ryobi started coming out with low profile and palming reels and Penn was left behind again.

Hi Steve,

I figured you meant throughout Penn's history, since you said, " The absence of light tackle baitcasters in the Penn line-up has always been an issue."

I love the Levelmatic's !

The old Penn hat is a post-war creation. Here is a photo from the 1950 Penn catalog. Otto Henze is in the photo wearing this hat, along with all his other fishing partners. Otto passed away in 1948.
