Title: River Monsters
Post by: happyhooker on June 06, 2020, 02:08:44 PM
Don't know if this topic has come up before.

Anyone ever watch "River Monsters" on TV (Animal Planet)?  I'm not much for evening TV, but my wife had Animal Planet on and this show came up.  In between reading, I was kinda listening to the show and saw this guy with some crazy tackle.  The first show was up in Alaska; silver-haired guy with a British/Australian-type accent was looking for fresh-water monsters in Alaska that had been reported seen over the years and/or had been tied to missing people.  He went after the biggest fish he could find. Huge sturgeon.  He must've ended up off the coast, because he was then targeting salmon sharks.  Took on some halibut too.  Stories about people being hurt/killed trying to catch some of these fish.  A bit sensationalized--I suppose TV demands that.  Wished he would've described his tackle a little more thoroughly.  Seemed to use bait-casting and spinning gear somewhat indiscriminately.  There was a second show; I believe he was in the Keys; after barracuda, lemon sharks, conger eels, etc.  You would not find me cuddling up to a monster barracuda like this guy was.

River Monsters with Jeremy Wade!  I think I've seen them all. He's British.

it was kinda' cool when it first came out, but I quickly lost interest: Jeremy Wade seems like a competent angler but from the video entertainment perspective, he's a waste of my time -- if this is supposed to be fish-porn, I don't want to watch a documentary of the fluffer getting ready for work

Jeremy Wade fishes places that most people wouldn't go near - on one of his trips his aircraft crashed in the Amazon jungle - he's a pretty unflappable character - he just carried on (on foot for a while). Met him once at a the Game Fair (one of the biggest hunting, shooting, fishing events) - Nice guy.

I enjoy his shows. Takes a unique individual to do what he does.
Fun and educational to watch!

I love Jeremy Wade.  His show was to be cancelled this year and then had a reprieve with more saltwater stuff included.  Now there's a knock-off river monsters with a different guy doing similar stuff.

I'm always intrigued by his tackle and the Wicked Tuna tackle.  They are probably all paid to do product placements.  Everyone on Wicked Tuna does Cabela's Bass Pro Shop placements.

I find Jeremy Wade`s shows very interesting. He has an enormous amount of intestinal fortitude.

He did a show on Muskies and was looking for a skull for the show. Apparently nobody had one except my chapter of Muskies Canada. One of our members found a 50" floater a number of years back. Kept the head and after letting mother nature clean it up, varnished it. Used it at displays and such. Anyway, we shipped the head off to England and they returned it with no issues.
Never did see the show  :D ???

Yeah, Jeremy Wade is the guy.  In his mid-60s now.  Some of the shows date back 10 yrs. or so.  As far as watching, I saw the shows on Animal Planet and I believe the Discovery Channel may have shown some episodes too.  Supposedly available on several streaming sites, some having subscriptions and some free or with free trials.  I see Pluto TV mentioned as one of the free sites (I am not familiar with this site) and others with free trials or paid subscriptions are YouTube TV and Hulu, among others.

I've found his investigative process to be pretty interesting. Seems realistic too, though there's gotta be alota editing. The hook-ups are fun.
