Title: Newbies and Party Boats
Post by: mrbrklyn on August 18, 2019, 02:36:16 AM
I hope nobody minds me posting things I write.  This is a break down of the expereince that Newbies have on party boat fishing along with tips and details about the experience.  Enjoy

I recently had a change to reflect on the experience that a new and inexperienced patron of recreational fishing boats goes through. Fishing is a very enjoyable experience, when it is done right, and with a little bit of help at the beginning. It can be completely miserable otherwise. Often, new patrons to the boats are caught by surprise by getting sea sick, or by the lack of amenities on a fishing boat. These are not pleasure craft, or dinner boats. They are stocked, and built for catching fish, and this is a bit like camping, not like touring the countryside with credit card in hand, and hot showers at the motel.

That being said, you can have a great time on a fishing boat. They are called party boats for a reason, there are a lot of laughter on these boats. And while different boats have different ease of access for new users, overall, none of them are the Circle Line or Carnival Cruises. And this misunderstanding can cause a number of negative reviews on internet platforms, and forums. I am going to review some things one can expect when fishing for the first time on a party boat, and how one should prepare for a trip in order to maximize your enjoyment. Then I am going to review a day I had on the Ocean Eagle V, to give life to some of these tips for newbies.

Honestly, the best introduction to recreational guided fishing is an Alan Tani trip. The only place I am happily a socialist.

Me too.

We've talked about the Sheepshead Bay boats before, Mr. B.    I've been dreaming of an East Coast trip with guys from this site since I joined.

Congrats, this was a very good read. Allowed me to experience a place I've not been that is foreign to me. While also learning, looking through the eyes of some one familiar with it all.

After finishing I was left with a strong desire to go, be there, enjoy these things I've just read about... Jeff

I really enjoyed your article; you put a lot of thought into it.  I know most of the SoCal boats (whether they are day boats or long range) all seem to have a "what to bring/not bring" list on their websites, and while useful it is just that - a checklist.  It seems like you have some really great relationships with the party boat scene there, I would hope they all make your article a standard part of their website/boat info, because making newbies feel welcome and allaying all of their many questions/anxieties is what is going to make or break any boat in the long term.

despite strong currents from the new moon, porgy and blues have been strong.

Also, I struck out completely on the Fluke trip last week.  I have no idea why.  I hooked up fish and lost them on the return on several ocasions.  I have a very light rod for fluking and I was using 4 ounce and 6 ounce weights with hi-lo rids, with gulp, teasers and natural spearing.  They just seemed to come off the hook.  It is very fustrating :)  I've obviously learned nothing about fluking yet!
yes my friend I have ran into that problem with brook trout here they just bounced off the lure had to go with a sifter rod to set the hook or maybe a knife sharping
stone on your hooks,,,,,,,, ;D

When I used to fish for flounder a lot I found that I had to let them take the bait, give it a few seconds, then come tight on them very slowly.  No jerking to set the hook; just steady and increasing pressure until they get up off the bottom and start to pull.

:)   Wow that brought back some memories of the Sheepshead bay boats.    My first 15 years of life was spent on a family owned charter boat business.
Jamaica Bay was my back yard .     If i was not fishing on the big boat i was fishing on a smaller boat that my father and i built .  Joe

I remember that boat well & also the Romar that was also in Shell Bank Creek. I grew up in Broad Channel & went to Hummel's for Out Board repairs in Howard Beach. We had a 29' Jersey Skiff back then kept it in Broad Channel. I spoke to John & Frank when I was out. I still live in the area & there isn't any open boats in the creek now.

The Flamingo goes out of there from the Movie theater parking lot.

The Flamingo sails from BROOKLYN. What Joe is talking about is in Queens. Check a map.

Joe are you talking about Charlie Klotz on Cross Bay Blvd.?

I was asking my brother about the flamingo and he thought that it sailed from mill basin .    Yes Charlie Klotz on Cross Bay Blvd.   MY uncle Frank and Charlie built the boat in house . I remember when they  casted the rudder and propeller in house. ,making the plug ,than the sand mold and i think it was two days to heat the bronze to pour one mold

Joe

The only boat to sail out of Mill Basin that I know of was the Sportsmen. His sailing time was 11 AM. I was friends with the Owner - Captain. He told me which electrics to buy for our boat at the time & we would meet in the mornings & I would give him packages of fresh Skinned Ells.
